SHEPHERDSTOWN WV CLUB INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS

The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown installed its officers for the 2016-2017 year on June 28.

The installation was held at the Club #39’s regular breakfast meeting. The new President will be Sandy Sponaugle. Walt Eifert will be Vice President. The other officers will be as follows: Secretary, Enrico Caruso; Treasurer, Karen Kinnett; Foundation Treasurer, Paul Woods; Past President, Dana Orsini.

Ms. Sponaugle is president of Platinum PR, a marketing and public relations firm in Shepherdstown. She has been a member of the Shepherdstown Club since 2014.

She is shown on the left in the accompanying photo taking the oath of office with Pam Waggoner, Assistant Governor for Area 16, on the right.

The historic town of Shepherdstown, WV held its annual Independence Day parade and community picnic on Monday, July 4.

These events have been organized by the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown since 2007. Their goal is to provide a wholesome, family-oriented Fourth of July celebration for the town.

In spite of a threat of heavy rain, the weather stayed dry enough to allow the parade and picnic to go forward and draw large crowds.

The parade included 74 units, a new record high. A wide variety of local organizations participated.

The picnic was held right afterwards, at the town's Morgan's Gove Park. Music was provided by two local bands and many children's activities were offered. The Rotary club sold food and beverages to help cover the parade and picnic costs.

Rotary District 7550 Responds to Recent Flooding

Southeastern West Virginia was hit by devastating flooding on June 23-24, 2016. Twenty-four people have been confirmed dead, and dozens more are still unaccounted for. Tens of thousands are still without power, and clean drinking water is hard to come by. At least seven clubs in District 7550 are being directly affected by the flooding.

The Western Greenbrier Rotary Club is in the midst of one of the hardest-hit areas, and the members want to be the face of Rotary to the hurting people in Rupert, Rainelle and other small towns in that area. District 7550 wants to enable this club to reach out, and provide tangible help in these communities.

This is an opportunity for Rotarians to step up and help fellow Rotarians and others in desperate need. District 7550 has established a Flood Relief Fund. Funds are flowing through the Lewisburg Rotary Club Foundation (District 7550). This Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity, therefore, these contributions are fully tax deductible in accordance with IRS regulations. The District has also formed a Rotary District 7550 Disaster Relief Team which has been charged with overseeing monetary distributions as well as coordinating the unified Rotarian effort to assist those in need.

Checks can be made payable to the Lewisburg Rotary Club Foundation and mailed in care of John Powell, District Governor, 2526 Spring Street, South Charleston, WV 25303-2501. Please designate the funds for flood relief.

Questions may be directed to DG John Powell at [email protected] or (540) 550-5533

SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOL

The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown has teamed up with Ezekiel’s Place (a local nonprofit organization) and the Waterfront Rotary Club of Cape Town, South Africa, to help a South African school renovate a portion of its plumbing and sanitation system.

The Waterfront Club stepped in to undertake this project as part of an ongoing effort it has mounted to accomplish similar renovations at a total of nine schools in Atlantis. The Club is working with its provincial government's education office, the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED), on this effort. As Rotary Clubs often do, the Waterfront Club has been seeking international partners to assist with its school-renovation effort. Last December, it submitted a proposal to support the Atlantis School project to Richard Anson, of Shenandoah Junction, a former World Bank economist who is both a member of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club and the Co-Director of Ezekiel's Place.

Discussions ensued and in January the Shepherdstown Rotary Club and Ezekiel's Place entered into a formal agreement with the Waterfront Rotary Club to support the Atlantis project. The Shepherdstown Club and Ezekiel's Place contributed $1,500 and $500, respectively, toward the project's total cost. The needed renovations have now been completed. All those involved in the project hope it can serve as a positive example for the other Atlantis schools undergoing renovations, and also serve as a positive example of international partnerships.

ROTARY CLUB OF DOWNTOWN STATE COLLEGE

During the June 30th lunch meeting at the Ramada Inn the State College/Downtown Rotary club donated $21,500. These dollars were raised by the club in the last year through a variety of events and fundraising efforts. This money will help 9 different organizations provide programing or services to locals in our community. This is a 19% increase over last year. President Chris Potalivo thanked members of the club for their hard work and dedication over the past year that made these donations possible.

2016 MORRISONS COVE ROTARY CLUBPAST PRESIDENTS' DINNER

On July 12, 2016 the Morrisons Cove Rotary Club celebrated its 90th anniversary of Rotary in the Cove as well as recognizing its past presidents with a dinner at The Bistro in Martinsburg. The event was attended by the newly installed DG Dick Drukker, and AG, Pamela Wilt and their spouses.

Morrisons Cove Rotary President, Craig Carlson, brought the official part of the evening to order and after the Pledge of Allegiance, Four Way Test, and invocation began by welcoming guests and having Dan Hoover induct Betsy Baker into the Club as our first member in the 90th decade. DG Dick Drukker was the speaker and provided entertaining and illuminating information about the past and future of Rotary.

Three members of the club received Paul Harris awards, two for the third time, Richard Reeve and Dan Hoover and one for the first time, Mrs. Marsha Biddle. The Paul Harris award, named for its founder, is awarded to individual Rotarians that have supported the Rotary Foundation with $1000. The foundation supports charitable efforts around the globe from fresh water to food and most notably, the eradication of Polio. Rotary is in the final stages of its goal of total eradication of this disease.

As Rotarians arrived for the event they were greeted by a mint condition 1930 Ford truck on loan from Terry Long of Long's Outpost. A large inflated Rotary Wheel was also located outside near the entrance to The Bistro. Wine and beer donated by members were available for a short social period prior to dinner. Rotarians took the opportunity to meet the new District leadership and get reacquainted with the spouses of our local members. The Bistro provided a perfect setting and service for the occasion. Kent Martin of Altoona provided wonderful music background for the gathering.
