A Community of Opportunity

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORDear Participants, Caregivers, Families and Professionals,

It is hard to believe that my tenure here at the JCC now spans three years! It has been tremendously exciting and personally rewarding to me that our programs have continued to flourish and that we have hired Jessica Walder as our Assistant Director of Special Needs Services as of July, 2012. Not only has Jessica been able to help expand our offerings and reach even more families, she has done so with enthusiasm and caring. Our top-notch program staff comprised of certified teachers and other professionals with extensive experience in the area of special needs are our greatest asset and provide a warm, safe environment for all participants along with low staff:participant ratios, always a priority in every one of our activities.

(continued on page 2)

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR (continued from cover) We are proud to report that every attempt is made to accommodate persons with special needs wherever possible within the JCC’s mainstream offerings. When that option is not ideal, there are a myriad of offerings within the scope of our Special Needs Department. Club JCC now offers an even wider range of activities, including new summer programs for children, teens and adults, overnight trips, extended day trips, adult day program extended day hours until 6:00pm, parents’ night out events, sports and recreation programs for children and teens and so much more! This year, our teen program has included weekend day trips and growth of our Teen Tracks Travel Camp program. In the pages that follow, you are sure to find something for every individual’s interest.

The Department’s fourth annual Dance-A-Thon, New York State of Mind (in New Jersey!), was very successful and exceeded fundraising goals. This meaningful (and fun!) event provides a committed group of teenagers, individuals with special needs, family members and professionals the opportunity to work together to create an awesome evening for all involved. In addition, we thank our local businesses and individuals who continue to support this event generously. Take a look inside for a preview of our 2014 event and be sure to save the date!

The following pages include listings of most Club JCC programs for the year; however, e-mail updates, along with announcements of new activities and events, are available to you on a regular basis. If you would like your name added to our e-mail list, please let us know by contacting us directly. The Club JCC newsletter is supported by our advertisers, whom we would like to acknowledge for their continuous sponsorship of the Special Needs Department.

Your perspectives, thoughts and suggestions are always welcome and encouraged. Thank you for your continued support of the work we do here at Club JCC!

Someone I love relies on me in ways you will never understand.Someone I love endures pain and challenges that break my heart and renew my spirit at the same time.Someone I love is unable to advocate for themselves for things that most of us take for granted.Someone I love will never have the opportunities that every child should have.Someone I love will need unconditional love and support after I am gone - this frightens me to the core.Someone I love encounters pity, stereotyping responses, and prejudice at every turn, because they look, act, and/or learn differently than others.Someone I love has needs that require me to allow “outsiders” to have power and input in areas that should be mine alone to meet.Someone I love will continue to look to me for everything in life long after other children are able to assume a place as part of the world.Someone I love has needs that require more time and energy than I have to give.Someone I love has needs that mean I am not able to meet basic needs of my own.Someone I love has needs that have become the driving force behind major decisions my family makes.Someone I love has changed me in ways I will never be able to describe.Someone I love has taught me about love and about the really important things in life…And still others don’t understand what it is to be me… they aren’t living in my skin.
