Busy, busy, busy is the only way to describe the past couple of months.
However, busy is great. It shows that our club is very active and focussed on providing services to our community.
We hosted a very successful Lions Show Appreciation evening and presented appreciation awards and certificates to many of our sponsors and helpers. They were then treated to a meal and drinks at our clubhouse.
Our Annual Blind Bowlers Tournament was, once again, a huge success and my grateful appreciation to all our Lions and Lion Ladies who supported this very worthy project. The bowlers had a ball and danced the night away to the excellent music provided by Winston Smile.
Lion George Leggett and his team ran a very successful Diabetes testing clinic at Harbourview Superspar and assisted many in diagnosing their condition. A special word of thanks to Lion Lady Debbie Marshall who is always on hand to administer the tests and provide good advice to those with high blood/sugar levels.
O u r 3 1 s t A n n u a l L e a d e r s h i p w e e k e n d project was also a huge success, despite the fact that a cyclone struck during t h e A m a z i n g R a c e challenge. Hats off to all members who had to brave v e r y s e v e r e w e a t h e r conditions and ensure that all the teams were safely returned to the camp site. I was overwhelmed by the tremendous support of the project shown by our Lions and Lion Ladies both at the
camp site and the formal dinner. The highlight of the formal dinner was the presentation of a Life Membership Award to Lion Hilton Horsley and an appreciation plaque to Lion Lady Bondi Horsley. This dedicated couple have been responsible for organising several successful Leadership Retreat projects for a number of years now.
October is also going to be quite a busy month, however, we will have some fellowship time during our progressive dinner scheduled for Saturday 7th. There are sure to be plenty of laughs as we meander from host to host along the infamous “Daisy Belt”!
I would like to thank all Lions and Lion Ladies who have shown such dedication to our projects so far. Many of you have given up your weekends and, I can assure you that this has not gone unnoticed. Thank you all or your tremendous support so far.

Hi Lion President Denis Meyer.............. Many Thanks for your Latest Sheppies Pride, Well Done on a Great Job together with your highly successful Annual Show. Apologies, I couldn't Make it that Weekend. Lion Seelan Picked up Some Great Ideas.Keep it Up !!!Kind Regards,Siva Govender (Durban East Coast Lions)
Lots of hard work and lots of fun!! Well done to the club!!I also see the Reitz induction went well. Always a privilege to read these newsletters.Much appreciated.Kindest regards - PCC Hennie Van Der Westhuizen (Somerset West Lions)
Hallo Denis,I'm looking forward to receiving your sponsorship so that some of these hives can get your name and reference number on them. All of a sudden the aloes in Pretoria started flowering (about 3 weeks earlier than other years) and we could stop feeding the bees (before they get too lazy to fetch their own food!!!) And while we're all “waiting” for the “change” of season, I'm getting more and more phone calls from people requesting swarm removal!!! (Never had it this “early in August” before). Maybe all of this is pointing to a very successful “honey season” ahead………..I enjoy your “digital magazine”. Maybe we can find someone in Krugersdorp with the necessary skills to make the same for us!!Take careJohann Marx (Beekeeper)

Port Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers (KZN Region) Tournament at the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo during the weekend of 2-3 September. A large number of blind bowlers travelled to the South Coast from all over the Province to participate in this annual
tournament and compete against a team of bowlers from the Riverside Bowling Club.
The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and, for the past 36 years Port Shepstone Lions have organised the competition and secured sponsorship for travel, meals, prizes and accommodation. Apart from the games, the weekend included accommodation and meals. Hibiscus Rotary Ann's Provided the Saturday lunch and the Port Shepstone Lion and Lion Ladies provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening.
The official prize giving ceremony took place on the Saturday evening. During his address, Port Shepstone Lions' President Denis Meyer thanked all participants, spoke of his club's long standing involvement with this tournament and paid tribute to all involved with the organising of the tournament. He then presented the Port Shepstone Lion' Blind Bowlers Floating Trophy to the winning team representative, Ann Osborne of the Riverside Bowling Club. NABB (KZN Region) Chairman, Peter Lonsdale then addressed the guests and paid tribute to the Port Shepstone Lions Club and the fact that Lions Clubs International are, this year, celebrating a century of service to mankind. Guests were then treated to an excellent musical ensemble by the very talented singer Winston Smile.
Port Shepstone Lions are, once again, most grateful to event organiser Madeleine Gouws who, on behalf of the Club, convened the event and arranged several sponsorships. The Lions would also like to thank the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo for their superb hospitality, their main sponsor, National Braiding Industries, First National Bank and all other sponsors who made generous donations towards this very successful annual project.

Port Shepstone Lions' 31st A n n u a l L e a d e r s h i p Retreat was held during
the weekend of 15-17 September at Camp Anerley. 44 Grade 11 pupils, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School 2018 Executive Council of Leaders, attended the camp. The full weekend program commenced shortly after they arrived at the camp on Friday with a welcome address by Retreat Convener, Lion Hilton Horsley, a course briefing by Lion Peter Mc Killen, an address by Headmaster Mr Peter Jenkins and the official opening address by Club President Denis Meyer. This was followed by talk on Lions Clubs International by Club President Denis Meyer. The group was thereafter divided into 5 colour coded teams who took part in various team-building exercises. After supper the ECL's participated in a very enjoyable ice breaking exercise before heading off to bed.
The ECL's had an early rise on the Saturday morning and were served a delicious breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on leadership theory, communication, motivation, an innovative engineering exercise, people to people relationships and conflict management. Various presenters included Pastor Chad Broom, Miss Kerry Mc Killen, Mrs s Van Wyk and Lions Jeff Smith, Hilton Horsley and Peter Mc Killen. After lunch the group participated in a very enjoyable and challenging “Amazing Race” together with Lions who acted as marshals and transported the teams around the course. It was quite a hair raising experience for both the Lions and the teams as a cyclone with heavy winds and driving rain struck during the race which resulted in many being drenched and numerous roadways being blocked by fallen trees and bushes. Fortunately there were no casualties and all arrived safely back at the camp site. Sunrise Farms once again kindly allowed the club to utilise their farm lands for this course which was organised and run by Lions Nico De Jong and Kevin Ross. The Grade 11's arrived at the Lions' Formal Dinner, held at Port Shepstone Country Club on the Saturday night, wearing glittering make-up, elegant evening wear, and smart suits. The main hall and tables had been beautifully decorated by Lion Lady Jenny Vogt. Emcee Lion Peter Mc Killen did a superb job in explaining the various formalities and protocols associated with a typical formal Lions gathering. During his address, Club President Denis Meyer presented an Appreciation plaque to Lion Lady Bondi Horsley in recognition of her ongoing involvement with the organising of the Annual Lions Leadership Retreat. The Amazing Race floating trophy was presented to the blue coloured "Tsunami Team".
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Lions Life Membership award to Lion Hilton Horsley in recognition of 32 years of outstanding services as a Lion. A special letter of congratulations from Lions International President Dr Naresh Aggarwal was also presented to Lion Hilton.
The guests enjoyed a superb three course meal and, once the formalities were over, they took to the dance floor until it was time to board the bus and return to the campsite.
On Sunday, the group, once again had an early start for breakfast. Then it was on to morning devotions with Mr Damian Williams and more lectures on goal setting and choices presented by Lion Hilton Horsley, ECL in action and their evaluation of the weekend. The afternoon session was dominated by the strenuous and very enjoyable obstacle course which was marshalled with much laughter by all Lions present. The rainy weather and muddy conditions added to the fun.
The Retreat was, once again, a resounding success. Hats off to Course Conveners, Lion Hilton and Lion Lady Bondi Horsley and their dedicated team of Lions and Lion Ladies. The entire project was funded by the Club's charity account together with generous sponsorships and support. Leadership development of our youth is one of the core projects of Lions Clubs International and this project is one of the signature service projects of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

Port Shepstone Lions ran another successful free diabetes testing clinic at Harbour View Superspar on Saturday 9th September.
A total of 56 people were tested during the course of the morning, 21 of which were out of their sugar level range.
The Club extends their sincere appreciation to the Management of Harbour View Superspar for providing the venue and Lion Lady (Sister) Debbie Marshall for her assistance and supervision of all the tests.
The club will continue to run regular diabetes testing clinics and aims to help raise awareness for diabetes which is a silent killer around the world.
ur all new Club Band debuted during
Oour monthly Bingo Session held on Saturday 30th September. The oldies
thoroughly enjoyed the musical ensemble provided by Lions Hilton Horsley (Doc) and Denis Meyer (Loop en Val) and sang along to some familiar songs. Additions to the band will hopefully include Jeff Smith (Pebbles) on the bongo drums and Gary Baker (GB) on vocals.
Autographs can be arranged as soon as the gout has subsided!

The 3rd Annual “Heritage Day Potjikos Compo” was held on 24th September at Port Shepstone Country Club. Defending champions, Port Shepstone Lions have won the trophy for the past two years, however were pipped at the post by Umthunzi Hotel this year. Many thanks to our “Team”, Lions Clayton Curnow and
Dup Du Plessis who represented the club as well as all members who went along to sample the delicious cuisine.

On Saturday 30th September,
our “youngest” and longest
serving member, Lion Mike
Rodda, celebrated his 85th birthday in
fine style at My Den Bed & Breakfast in
Oslo Beach. Port Shepstone Lions and
Lion Ladies joined Mike and Yvonne for
a delicious celebration dinner and
plenty of fellowship. Here’s to many
more happy years!
ver wonder what our Lion Ladies get up to when the Emen are attending Club Meetings? Well here is the
proof - they get together at a restaurant and have a
jol! During the recent Club meeting, our Ladies decided to
visit the newly opened “Razzles” Pub & Restaurant in
Umtentweni and “try out the menu”. Judging by the
smiles on their faces, they were suitably nourished...
