With one week of practices under our belt, the women’s lacrosse team is feeling confident about this season. The first couple of practices are always fun, get-to-know-you practices, and are great for team bonding. We played games for everyone to learn names and faces, with a little lacrosse incorporated, of course! A goofy trend started by two of our officers, Kate and Caty, is to wear two Miley Cyrus-like buns in their hair when it is sunny and warm out. (They have so named this tradition “suns out buns out.”) As you can see, the two buns in everyone’s hair make for some very entertaining pictures. Along with the fun, there were also plenty of drills and scrimmaging, allowing us to see the potential in this season’s team. Something that has never happened for us is that we have about an equal number of attackers (offensive players), and defensive players, which strengthens our team greatly.

On Thursday, we held a workout session at the SRC that allowed for plenty of team bonding through cardio and weight lifting (always a good time). We plan to continue this weekly Thursday workout to build our muscles as well as our team unity. We’re excited about continuing to build our strength, endurance, and team as a whole in the weeks to come!

Our first scrimmage will be this month against High Point University, and is what we are eagerly training for at the moment. It will be held on our home turf at State Farm Fields on September 20th at 2:00pm, and we could not be more excited! We’ve played them in previous seasons, and it has always been an intense, high-level game. It will be a good gauge to see how we play as a team, and most importantly it will be loads of fun! Getting some playing time in before our big Yosef Home Tourney in October will be advantageous for us so we can be well equipped and prepared to play multiple teams in one weekend.

With this first scrimmage, the biggest thing we could use is FANS!!! We love and appreciate seeing everyone out in the “stands.” Your support really brings out the best in us, so come on out Sunday, September 20th at 2:00pm to the State Farm fields because we’re ready to kick off the season strong!

As we welcome September, we also welcome our first taste of fall and the true beginning of rock climbing season! We are excited to have a super well-rounded team, consisting of new and old members, ranging from beginner to advanced. The first few weeks of Climbing Team are always a bit hectic. As a result of a successful Club Expo, we began our season with an email list of over 250 new and excited climbers! Sorting through an overwhelmingly long list of contact information was stressful to say the least, but things have worked out nicely! A couple of weeks into practices and our numbers have settled into a more reasonable place. All of our climbers are psyched to get stronger and dominate in the quickly approaching competition season. Along with practicing hard, we’ve been focusing a lot on bouldering outside. Exposure is key for getting more comfortable with climbing and pushing yourself to try harder things. This past weekend, we went out to the Grandmother Boulders, near Grandfather Mountain.

Unfortunately, we ended up getting rained out about an hour into our trip, but we still got some good climbs in! We also spent some time bouldering in Linville Gorge, which is one of my favorite spots. With perfect temps and plenty of sunshine, it was a totally ideal and full day of bouldering. We’re really lucky, as climbers, to have access to such beautiful areas with such classic climbs. We also have been getting outside in order to prepare for our first competition. On October 3rd, we will be participating in a competition at Hound Ears Country Club, right here in Boone. It is an outdoor bouldering competition, and a lot of very strong locals compete in it. Hound Ears is always the highlight of our fall season, and we can’t wait for our new members to experience it!

This weekend nine members of the cycling team traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia for the first mountain bike race of the 2015 season. Race weekends are always good for team bonding, (especially when you are stuck in the car together for six hours of travelling) but spirits were high and we were excited to start racing again. Everyone was an experienced rider, but five of the racers that went were new to the team, so it was great seeing them in App State kits for the first time. This was a challenging weekend, with two cross-country races and one short track race in just two days.

The college of William and Mary hosted, and the first race was at York River State Park close to campus. The trails were rolling with plenty of switchbacks and roots. The Men's C racers started the day at 8:00am with a 14 mile cross country race. Charlie Shuford, Matt Jones, and Blake Ferree came in 4th, 5th, and 6th places respectively. Men's A started at9:30am with a 26 mile race. Miles Hubbard, Hayden Miller, and

Sean Hildebrandt came in 3rd, 5th, and 10th place after a grueling 4 laps. Men's B and Women's A races were 20 miles each and started shortly after. Jordan Bouldin and Jacob Richard got 2nd and 3rd place for Men's B and Annie Pharr got 5th place for Women's A.

The Sunday races were held close by at Freedom Park. Though tired from the previous day of riding hard, everyone came out and crushed the courses again for a second day. The lengths and start-times of the races were identical to Saturday, but this time the Cross Country race was followed by a Short Track race. The XC course was winding and fast, and the short track was spectator friendly, filled with little jumps, and broken up by a short, paved climb. In Men's C, Blake, Matt, and Charlie got 5th, 6th, and 7th. In Men's A, Miles and Sean came in an impressive 3rd and 4th, and Jordan took first place for Men's B, killing the competition even on his single speed bike. That afternoon, the short track race started with Men's C racers, who rode as hard as they could for 20

minutes. They were followed by Men's B and Women's A, who rode for 25 minutes. Jacob's hard work paid off and he won

Men's Bs. The last race of the day was the Men's A racers who rode for 30 minutes. Miles came in 2nd after a close battle with two other A riders. Overall, it was a successful weekend and a great turnout from App State's team. This season is already shaping up to be a great one.

Open House is one of the more important activities the Equestrian team holds. Each year we invite students who are interested in joining our team to explore our riding facility and try out some of the horses we have available. It can be very nerve wracking as our coaches watch all of the members ride, both returning and new, in order to place them with an appropriate horse and in an appropriate skill level group. However, after watching everyone ride, there was no need for nerves. This year there are so many promising riders; we are thrilled to have such amazing additions to our team.

Foothills Equestrian Center is our riding facility for Hunt seat and Dressage disciplines. Once we arrived, Dana Dewey and Sarah Klasset, our coaches, met with the new members to fill out paperwork and enjoy some snacks. The returning members went to tack up some of the horses for the new members to ride. Once the horses were tacked up, warmed up, and ready to go, the fun began. I really enjoyed watching how well the team bonded with returning members laughing and cracking jokes along with the new members to ease some of the nerves. Blair Huff, a new member of the equestrian team stated, “Getting involved with the Equestrian team has, so far, helped me find my niche at Appalachian with people who share my same passion for horses. In my opinion, Equestrians are generally some of the most relaxed, genuine, and accepting people and the Appalachian team fits that description perfectly. Dana and all of the returning members have been so supportive and welcoming of the new members like me; helping set up carpooling, quickly answering urgent questions over text, and helping us through the joining process. I'm so excited to try dressage, a totally new discipline for me, and

I look forward to being an Appalachian Equestrian team Member!” The Open House at Foothills was a success. It was so much fun bonding with everyone and getting a glimpse of the amazing talent that will shine through during our competitions coming up in a few weeks.

The Western division of our team also had a wonderful time at their Open House. Their new facility, Mimosa Hill Farm, is a beautiful place located in Morganton under their new coach, Crosby Reed. Megan Hoover, a returning member, had a few words about the Western Open House, “We all loved how our coach was still giving us time to ride outside of everyone's placement tests. She was still giving us tips and even rode with us! She sincerely cares about how we do and we are going to kick butt this year!” We cannot wait for practice to begin and for the season to take off. I have a wonderful feeling that this year’s team is the best yet!

As our club sports teams have been kicking off their fall season, the executive officers have been working hard to finish some important items for this semester. They have finally finished the task of taking in all of the medical consent forms for each club sports athlete, as well as completing travel forms for each team. With this large task behind them, they now have some time to focus on some other goals for the fall semester. Each executive officer had to choose a destination for this semester. Chad will be working on a way to make club sports more recognized around campus and creating more publicity for our program. Olivia is trying to come up with an incentive program for teams to come out to each other’s competitions and support one another. Patrick is attempting to revise the wording in the budget point section of the Club Sports Manuel. They are very excited to start working on these projects!

A Club Sports Council meeting was held on Wednesday, September 9th. Council Representatives updated the council on their teams. Many were happy to report that they are retaining high numbers at their practices and not losing very many players. Some teams are looking forward to competing in their first games of the season this weekend. The council broke out into our newly formed committees, which are Fundraising, Community Service, Team Unity, Budget Points, and Publicity. They were able to finish the committee charters and start working on some exciting things for the semester. Some items that committees started to work on include a potential Club Sports Capture the Flag game and a state wide canned food drive competition against other North Carolina universities. The club sports council is looking forward to all the things they are hoping to accomplish this semester!
