CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE: I have just returned from the gathering that constituted our Sunday Ride this month and there were a few faithful who arrive at the appointed place. Nevertheless it was good to see that there were some supporters of the event and the weather was perfect for riding. The ride did highlight some weaknesses and once again shows the importance of appropriate testing of machines before the DJ. The Pre DJ was a great success by all accounts and congratulations to Ralph Pitchford for winning this. It seems that we have a new rising star in our midst and that can only be good for all concerned. This month a combined meeting of our committee together with the committee of the VVC will be held and the purpose will be to explore ways in which we can enhance the synergy between the clubs. There are opportunities where we can capitalize on the relationship and I think it is also fair to say that future plans may consider a marriage of some kind. The assurance that I can give in this regard is that no hasty action will be taken and that whatever is decided as an outcome will definitely have the best interests of the movement and the clubs concerned in mind. You will be kept informed all of the way. It remains for me to wish every DJ rider a safe enjoyable and successful run and it is wonderful to see that there is continued enthusiasm and support for this amazing event. We welcome all the entrants from across the seas and from neighbouring countries and thank the organizers for the hard work they have done to put it all together. Until next month safe and happy riding and a Great DJ to all associated with it. Ian Holmes

Club night 27th January 2014 A dark and stormy night saw 53 brave souls attend the meeting on Monday night. The evening began with Ian Holmes’ ‘first unofficial’ meeting as co-opted chairman, until June that is. After the announcements apologies were received by amongst others Mike Lester. It was good to see Caroline (the honey lady) & her husband brave the elements. A quick report back on the Chairmans cocktail evening and ride in memory was given also by Ian and a reminder of the forthcoming events which included the centenary run, the DJ the pre DJ. Ric Lewis started the entertainment with a recollection of many stories of the DJ in the past - the unfortunate and sometimes fortunate mishaps with the riders and their steeds. Tales of getting lost, firefighting, major and minor breakdowns, were told and he also emphasised the great camaraderie that this event brings to the entrants. It was noted that Kevin Robinson has won no less than six times and also has been clerk of the course a couple of times. The raffle was drawn and bottles of whiskey & wine were won as well as chain lube etc. This was followed by two short but very interesting video clips on the Henderson motorcycle - a four cylinder beast built in the 30’s that could easily top 110 m.p.h.

Jay Leno gave a story on how he came across his Henderson acquisition which he keeps in original condition and claims that hardly any restoration had to be done to it. Wonder if the one that we saw on the 1000 bike show in 2013 will ever run again? Editors note: This is my first newsletter from our new home in Fish Hoek. I won’t say the move was easy because it wasn’t, but now as I look out over False Bay with the sun rising over a calm sea I am beginning to think that it was all worth it. The trip down was interesting, I will do a write up for the next edition, but I drove down in my old Porsche 356/911 special, and my wife drove her also old Mercedes 280SL. We had a dog each together with plenty luggage – but more on that next time!. Editing Kickstart from the Cape may sound unusual, but in today’s electronic age makes little difference really. The only thing that is difficult is not being at events and reporting on them. SO........this is a big appeal for you to submit stories, articles, photos – in fact anything you think would be of interest to our readers.

Odds and Ends: Email received from Liza-Mari Venter.

Good day. I have a Puch DS 50 moped/scooter that I want to restore. It is not in too bad condition, but will need some work done to the electrical components as well as the engine, as it has not run in about 15 years. Can you possibly give me some information or contact details of people who does restoration work like this. My phone number is 0723794990, email is [email protected] Regards, Liza-Mari Venter Email received from Kelly Farrell Hello Andy. Thanks for the chat this afternoon. I have a 1957 Tiger 110 that my son left me when he departed for Canada some years ago. I have finally got to rebuilding it and am now stumped by the upper yoke & nacelle assembly. There are small tapped holes in the upper yoke which I presume are securing points for the R & L nacelle covers. However these tapped holes do not align with any holes in the nacelle covers. If my presumption is correct there is about ¼ inch discrepancy between the “aligning” holes. ie. the upper & lower

5

yokes seem to be ¼ inch to far apart. I have installed new bearing cups, cones & ¼” balls in the steering head and they are properly seated. Now I am wondering if the nacelle & nacelle covers actually do get secured to the top yoke at all & possibly only to the lower yoke by way of the pinch bolts. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I live in Klerksdorp & my numbers are 018-468-2070 & 082-791-3999. Kind Regards, Kelly Farrell Email received from Bennie Boshoff Good day. My name is Bennie and I am from the Westrand. I am not sure if I am speaking to the right person, but if I am not can you please direct me. I am looking for an old most probably early 80's KDX 250 cc Kawa scrambler kick start lever, and the old DT 175 Yamaha road scrambler maybe late 80's right hand batt. cover. I have visited 11 shops with no luck. If there is any site, shop or person that you can advise me or direct me to, please I am desperate for these parts. Once again, if I have intruded or had to follow a ladder to contact you, I apologize, that was not the intention. If you can assist me, I thank you. Regards Bennie 082 781 2483

DJ 2014 Excitement is building up rapidly now for this year’s DJ and we look forward to another great event. At the last Club Meeting Ric Lewis entertained the group with some very entertaining and amusing stories of past DJ’s and this alone also helped to build up the spirit. Many are setting out on the 4th, 5th and 6th March to participate in what is certainly one of the great old motorcycling events in the world and once again this year we have a contingent of riders from overseas as well as a good field of locals. There are around 120 entrants for the event and this includes a number of first time riders. Grateful thanks to those kind folk who make bikes available for entrants who do not yet own one

6

as this is the only way to ensure that the event continues to attract new support. Many of our riders are on in years now and we must look to the youth to continue the run. There are also a number of rebuilds which will be on their second maiden voyages in the field and we trust that they will honour their rebuilders by performing faultlessly. It is always great to see the rebirth of a machine which may have lain idle and forgotten for many decades before being lovingly brought to life again.

First time DJ entrant Martin Kaiser and veteran Ric Lewis who has made Martin's ride possible The field will be missing one of its greatest icons in the form of Stewart Cuninghame but the name will be kept high by his son Alan who has entered. I am sure we will see Stewart around the event giving out good advice and generally supporting all who care to partake of his wisdom and experience. He has also donated a special trophy to the event of which more will be revealed. We wish all the starters a SAFE and enjoyable ride and look forward to the comradeship, excitement and fun of the event. Assistance required The 2014 Magnum is a joint event between the POMC and our club the VMC. We want to make this event special this year and also MUST attract sufficient entries to make the event viable. To this end we would like to create a website which will be a great marketing tool for sponsorship etc, as well as a forum to keep entrants/potential entrants up to date with what is happening etc. In order to populate the website we would like any information anyone may have on previous Magnum events – how the event started, when it started. Notes on any event, pictures, history – in fact ANYTHING related to the event. If you have anything you think would add value please be in contact with [email protected], or phone Andy on 0825534492.

It’s that time of year again, and preparations for the 39th annual Cars in the Park are underway. This show will be held at Alexander Park, Pietermaritzburg on 18 May 2014. The first CITP focussed on what were considered ‘old cars’. However, as time goes by, the show has evolved to include more modern and even brand new cars. Last year a wide variety of different vehicles were on display. What is classified as an ‘old car’ is a rolling date, and to some, even the nineties is 'so last century'! Nevertheless the emphasis will always be on showing ‘interesting’ cars. This year we would like to try something special, and include as part of the showcase, cars that were made in about the same year as their owners became interested in cars! This will be a tribute to the changing times and could help educate the younger generations about the days before air bags, ABS, EDS, Brake Assist, and collision mitigation, when you actually had to be able to drive to be allowed behind a steering wheel! We are often attracted to the cars that remind us of our youth, so we are hoping that some of you have bought back the cars that are about the same age that you are, regardless of your age! Among these cars, we are hoping to see some Pontiacs, Mercury’s and especially an Arrol Johnson or a Trojan. If you own a ‘car of your youth’ please bring it along, and if you feel ‘in the spirit’, dress according to the times! (Be it the times of roaring twenties, Frank Sinatra, James Dean or Elvis). Also bring along period accessories (not just the owners) such as fascinators, walking sticks, portable record players, wicker picnic hampers or whatever else reminds you of your youth. There will be judging and prizes for the best dressed! Not to ignore technology, we would also like to include any fabulous exotica not usually seen on the streets of PMB .like Hotrods and Muscle Cars. Muscle Cars were also plentiful in CITP 2013 and many keen supporters came to admire some superb workmanship, and absorb those spine tingling rumbles. And what would early CITP exhibitors make of the modern Super Car? Owners of such cars are welcome to join us as an individual or as part of a club. We are still looking for McLarens, and a Morgan (e.g. 2013 three wheeler), Lamborghinis, Porsches, Maseratis, Ferraris and any others that are available. These are always popular, regardless of age. The entry process was streamlined last year, and many complimented the new approach, despite the odd glitch. To register this year all you have to do is to tell me, by early April 2014, roughly how many vehicles your group will bring and in which colour coded area you parked last year. I will send you the stickers. We do not need licence plate numbers and such detail. The simple colour stickers will make entry and parking easier for all. We just need to make the zones big enough. The coloured stickers help the marshals direct you smoothly and quickly to your favourite zone. The sooner you respond with attendance figures the sooner we can get the stickers to you. We understand that exact vehicle information may be fuzzy as restorations run over time, and old cars break down, but good estimates make life easier for all. On arrival settle in your display spot, meander down to the registration tent, sign a form, collect a display card briefly describing its provenance, and collect a memento for the day. That’s it. Relax and enjoy the day. Our regular traders will attend, with perhaps a few new ones. The Park Inn will be there along with a sit down refreshment area operated by Rotary. We are also hoping to have a ‘big screen’ showing nostalgic motoring videos to set the mood. With your support we look forward to a repeat of last year’s happy and interesting car show. Feel free to contact me, Fred Rascher, on: [email protected] or 083 369 7020 Hosted by the Vintage Sports Car Club Pietermaritzburg in Association with Rotary Club of Pietermaritzburg.
