November 2014
In November, twenty CMS

being empathetic. For those
who do not know, empathy is
the very important ability to share someone else’s feelings. Below is a list of
students who have been seen demonstrating empathy this month:
Michael Brizendine Dallas Bryson Hailie Brown Victoria Carter
Dylan Costner Christina Diehl Jacqueline Hansen Jarren Hansen
Chastin Hawkins Matthew Hawkins Rakeem Mack Nicholas Martin
Jayden Merritt Shayna Neal Lamar Petties Lucas Raetz

you are interested in being selected in the coming months, be sure to act
with these principles: empathy, attitude, gratitude, leadership, and
empowerment.
TEAM EAGLE Character Traits by Gillian Moses
Words like attitude, leadership, empowerment. You’ve seen them all over
the school. You know how important it is to better yourself by trying to live
up to them. Students at Clover Middle School are being celebrated this year
for doing such. With each month is a word that corresponds with the
acronym EAGLE:
EEmpathy
AAttitude

What are you thankful for?
by Mikiah Good
It's Thanksgiving, and I'm very thankful. It's that time of the year when you want to spread cheer. There are many things you should be thankful for like your family and your home. Everyone should be thankful for something in life. If you think about it, many different people wake up to nothing, so just be happy that you have something to be grateful for. I'm very thankful for my mom and dad, my home, my sisters and brothers, and being able to have the privilege of going to school. Many people have gone through a lot, and they might think there's nothing they can be thankful for. There's something there, but they just don't realize it.
I am grateful for Malayna Barrett because she was my
first friend at CMS. Even though we get into fights, we
always make up. She's always there for me.—Gracee
Burton
I am grateful for Christiana Priester, Charlotte Gourley,
Roman Thomas, and Elizabeth Boyd because without
any of them in my life I don't know who I could have
turned to for emotional support. I love them with all my
heart! Love you, Bubba, Sissy Charlie, Sissy Lizz, and my
BFF Christiana—Adia Rathburn
I am thankful for Reagan Burrell because she has been
there for me in my hard times. We both had family
emergencies, and she was there for me the whole time.
—Hannah Horton
I am thankful for my twin sister Shannon Quinn because
she is a great sister, and she helps me when I don't
understand my school work. —Sarah Quinn

Seventh Grade Have you ever been to the nurse’s office in need of medicine? Have you ever been sick at school? This CMS nurse does everything from arranging medicine and keeping medical forms to calling parents to pick up their children. Next time you skin your knee on the blacktop or get a headache, Mrs. Cain will be there to help you. It's crazy that one lady could make such a big difference, but it's true; she works hard to keep everyone at CMS safe. Mrs. Cain should be appreciated by everyone here at Clover Middle School because what she does isn't easy. It takes a lady like her to do it right.

Love Librarians by Lauren Talley and Cierra Hamilton

A lot more happens behind these doors than you could imagine. From organizing books to holding parties, these librarians really contribute to making Clover Middle School what it is today. Mrs. Boheler and Mrs. Millen arrange the books on the shelves, they hold a donut breakfast every nine weeks to reward the students who read 500k words, and they also do extra things, like the Mockingjay Premire Party. They even make sure to send you an email when you have an overdue book or a book on hold that needs to be picked up. Not only do they notify you of important things, but they also help you find and check out/in books from Eagle Pride Time to 3:40 p.m. If you ever need to find a good book to dive into, they would be more than happy to help you out. CMS Journalism would like to give a shout-out of gratitude to the librarians here at Clover Middle School. They're just inside these poster-filled doors, so next time you see them, thank them for all their hard work, and be sure not to forget how important these ladies are to the teachers and students here at CMS.

The Leo Club, sponsored by Mrs. Lombardo, is all
about helping the community and our school. We
make sure the school’s plants are weeded, and we
clip away dead plants so new growth can occur.
We also recycle any paper that is not being used, so
landfills do not over fill.
We make sure CMS is a happy, healthy place. We
also give back to our community. In addition, we
write letters to soldiers and participate in food
drives and fundraisers.
Mrs. Lombardo's sixth grade class is working on a garden specifically for winter vegetables such as carrots, winter
squash, onions, and many more! They haven't grown much, but everything takes time. She thinks it will take
about two months for the plants to mature and be fully grown. She also says
the classes have been weeding. Since rain is coming, it will help plants grow.
She would like it if The Leo Club could make sure the plants get enough
water if it doesn't rain. The students started working on the garden three
weeks ago. Mrs. Lombardo plans for the students to go outside and work on
them again later in the month. Mrs. Lombardo and her sixth grade classes
are sure to have a fantastic winter garden!

Team 6-2 classes are bringing in the
dough! When students are good, they
get rewarded with Eagle Bucks. The
Eagle Bucks come in ones, fives, tens,
and twenties, each a different neon
color. The students get two weeks to
collect Eagle Bucks. If students don’t
bring supplies to class, they will be
fined. If students are fined too much,
they can obtain a negative balance.
The 6-2 science teacher,
Mrs. Lombardo, said, "This is fun. I
think of this as middle school
monopoly." At the end of the two weeks, it is time to spend. The 6-2 students bought snacks
like chips, soda, Gatorade, candy, cookies, and popcorn. During class they ate and drank the
items they purchased. They also got to bid for jerseys. The bid amount started at 200 Eagle
Bucks. What an AWESOME way to encourage positive behaviors!

@CMSBLUEEAGLES #QTNA (Questions That Need Answered)
#QTNA What is your most memorable
moment of the 2014 season?
How did you grow as
an athlete this year?
What advice do you have for other athletes
or students who are thinking about trying
out for a team?

The Bearcat Tournament: We got to
watch and compete against some great
teams.
My confidence level has
increased. At the beginning
of the season, I was afraid
to hit the ball because I
thought I wasn’t good
enough, but by the end I
wanted to hit the ball.
Don’t ever feel you’re not good enough. You can
always get better. If you’re not the best, it’s not the
end.
Learn to love your teammates like your family. Not
liking someone isn’t getting you anywhere.
#21 Emily

The Bearcat Tournament I improved by working
together and always trying
to have a positive attitude.
Do your best. Keep a smile on and give it your all
every day.
#7 Avery Carter
I made eleven aces against the other
team.
I was looking at how 8th
grade was serving, and I
tried and I got it.
If you don’t think you can do it, just believe and push
yourself to do the impossible.
#25 Caleigh Dover
Beating Oakridge: We worked really
hard for that win, and we wanted it so
badly. I remember standing on the
court during the last set, and my heart
was beating so fast. After we got the
last point, we were all jumping and
screaming. The parents were even
jumping and screaming. Coach Sims
was standing on the side, and I could
tell by the look on her face that she
was proud of us.
I learned that it’s okay to
make mistakes, but to
shake it off and let it go.
Instead of dwelling on my
mistakes, I moved on and
learned from them.
Never doubt yourself. You can do anything you set
your mind to. If you want to be the best, you have to
beat the best, and that means you have to give 150%
every day, every practice, every workout. Be the best
you can be. When you make a mistake, shake it off
and move on. It’s pointless to get down on yourself.
Being serious and taking it too far are two different
things. Enjoy what you do and never complain. There
will come a day when you can’t play anymore, and you
don’t want to regret anything.
#17 Emma Sciba
Winning our first game By learning how to do new
things and working with a
team
You need to give your all and never give up. Don’t get
down because the score is down!
#24 Madelyn Strader
My favorite memory was the Bearcat
Tournament because it brought us
together as a team.
I improved my serves and
spikes. I can now place my
serves and time my spikes.
Future athletes need a good attitude on the court, and
they need to be open to new ideas. Coaches often see
more in you than you do.
#19 Cameron Wilson
Winning our last game: It felt great to
win that game and to play how I know
we can.
I started off barely knowing
anything about volleyball.
By the end of the season, I
knew exactly what was
expected and I tried my
hardest.
They need to give 110% and just do their best. Never
give up. Find your fight, and more importantly, keep
it.

GO EAGLES!
At the October pep rally, the Lady Eagles volleyball teams showed some spirit. The seventh and eighth grade players were recognized, and the students cheered loudly for every player. The athletes showed teamwork when they huddled and chanted together. BELOW LEFT: CMS seventh grade volleyball team with Coach Usina. BELOW RIGHT: CMS eighth grade volleyball team with Coach Sims.

School Resource Officer Ray Feaster recently talked to eighth grade students about the U.S. Constitution, and the
eighth grade social studies teachers asked some students to act out skits to help everyone understand what is
allowed in the amendments and what is not permissible. All of the eighth grade teams had participants in the
skits. One eighth grader, Ma’kenya Boyd, had this to say about the lesson: “I thought it was a good experience
to learn about the Constitution this way.”

by Miriam Fearby Miriam Fearby Miriam Fear Living with Aaron Burr The bus rolls along a dirt road as it pulls up to a green log house. The door opens and the eighth graders of
Clover Middle School stream onto the dying grass. They rub their hands together to maintain the last feeling
of warmth into their fingers as Mr. Scott Carroll started talking about the history of the house.
This historical house was one of the first and last houses standing from the American Revolution in South
Carolina. The house went through many changes and played different roles in the Revolution. Aaron Burr,
killer of Alexander Hamilton, was kept in the upstairs room as a traitor after telling the public lies. When you
are in the house, you can still feel the wrath of Aaron Burr in the upstairs room when you climb the steep
steps. Learning about this unforgettable place has definitely left a mark on my life.
On Friday, November 14, CMS
eighth grade students took a field
trip to Chester, South Carolina.
Students went to a the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Scott Carroll to learn
about Aaron Burr, a vice
president when America was still
young. They also learned about
his deadly duel with Alexander
Hamilton. Walking through the
house was an amazing journey
through time as they went into
the room where Aaron Burr had
been imprisoned. The eighth
graders were allowed to walk
around the property, and they
were encouraged to look for
arrowheads and other objects. A
bonfire was the perfect spot to
keep warm and work on an
activity packet. They had much
fun, but the trip had to end at
some point. Students thanked the very generous homeowners and said good-bye. Many thanks to
Mrs. O’Dell, Mrs. Hagy, Mrs. Reed, and the other eighth grade teachers for organizing this trip!

Mockingjay is a book about Katniss Everdeen who starts a rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss, the protagonist, becomes the symbol of the rebellion, the Mockingjay. District 13, a district thought to be dead, supports Katniss and is rebelling with her. This book is part of a trilogy. The first book is The Hunger Games, and the second book is Catching Fire. If you liked these books, then you will surely like Mockingjay.
Review:
This action-filled book is one of the best. Suzanne Collins's descriptive, captivating use of words makes you want to read the book cover-to-cover without a break. The suspenseful chapters are breathtaking and completely unpredictable. This book receives a 5/5 rating.
Book Quotes:
-"Fire is catching and if we burn, then you
burn with us." ~ Katniss Everdeen
-"I drag myself out of nightmares each morning and find there's no relief in waking." ~ Finnick Odair
-"Finally he can see me for who I really am. Violent. Distrustful. Manipulative. Deadly. And
I hate him for that." ~ Katniss Everdeen

The Halloween dance was an exciting way to celebrate the reading accomplishments of the students here
at Clover Middle School. Two hundred and twenty-five students were eligible to attend the dance, and
they were also rewarded with fifteen extra minutes of recess the first Monday of November. We
congratulate all of the students who participated, and we appreciate the administrators, teachers, and
parents who volunteered time to organize the events.
