I would like to congratulate everyone on another very successful Mighty Howard County Fair. The projects and the people once again made our fair Mighty. All of you continue to make me proud to be a part of Howard County 4-H.

Although the Mighty Howard County Fair has come and gone, the summer keeps moving along. The Iowa State Fair is on and we have some exceptional communication projects, static projects and livestock pro-jects heading to Des Moines this year. If you aren’t participating this year but you are planning to head down with your family or friends, make sure you take time to look at all the hard work our Howard County youth are continuing to put in beyond the local level. Good luck to all of our 4-Hers as they travel and par-ticipate in the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Next on the agenda in our 4-H year is record book completion! Record books are due September 2nd (since Sept. 1 is a holiday). IF YOU NEED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH YOUR RECORD BOOK PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Just so you’re prepared, there are less than 300 days until the 2015 Mighty Howard County Fair. Once again this is a late edition due to a very busy late July and early August. We will get back on track with a Septem-ber issue in just over a week.

Thank you to all clubs and project lead-ers who donated items to the annual Silent Auction held at the Howard County Fair. This year’s auction was a successful one! Over $1800 was raised! Thanks to all of the supporters.

Please remember if you participated in the Ribbon Auction or won a tro-phy at the fair, to send a thank you to your buyers or sponsors if you have not already done so.

Each year the 4-H and FFA Rabbit Show participants are able to enter the Best Dressed Rabbit class. Each participant dresses their rabbit up in their favorite costume and a picture is taken. The pic-tures are displayed in the rabbit barn during the fair and fairgoers vote on their favorite Best Dressed Rabbit.

The 2013 Best Dressed Rabbit People’s Choice Award went to Mitchell Marr with his rabbit. Congratulations Mitchell!

Each year at the Mighty Howard County Fair the livestock barns are judged for the best barns in each species and an overall best barn plaque is awarded. This year the barn prizes were as follows:

Beef- $15 sponsored by Charlie and Judy Baier went to Diligent 4-H’ers Club.

Poultry- $15 sponsored by Keith Klimesh went to Diligent 4-Hers Club.

Swine- $15 sponsored by Cresco Bank & Trust went to Crestwood FFA.

Sheep- $15 sponsored by C US Bank went to Diligent 4-Hers Club.

Dairy- $15 sponsored by Dick and Lois Ollendieck went to Howard Center Stars 4-H Club.

Horse- $15 sponsored by Grover Farms went to Afton Aces 4-H Club.

Rabbit- sponsored by Brad and Alison Holten went to Cresco Merrymakers 4-H Club.

Overall barn prize plaque which will be on display in the Expo Hall was awarded to Diligent 4-Hers Club. There was a special overall barn prize of $50 this year sponsored by the Peckham family in memory of Shay.

REGION 4 YOUTH SPECIALIST WOODWORKING BEEF WEIGH-IN

Starting to look for a project for next year’s fair? Are you interest-ed in getting involved with the woodworking project? The How-ard County Woodworking Project Area Leaders are ready to help. If you have any interest in starting a woodworking project contact the Extension Office. The project lead-ers are anxious to get started on some new projects for this fall/winter.

Many of you had the opportunity to get to know Dan Lane over the years and I would like to take this time to thank him for his service to Howard County and to our en-tire region. Dan has left Extension for another position and we wish him the best of luck. Howard County will not be with-out a Specialist for long as Kendra Crooks from New Hampton will be taking over the reigns officially as of August 28th. Kendra has been involved with the 4-H program many years and will be housed in the Chickasaw County Office.

Our regional Citizenship program is about to get under way for the 2014-2015 year. Citizenship Group had their first

meeting on Sunday, Oct. 27th. We went over the basics of the program and what the expectations are for the year. The Citizenship Group is a two year commitment that covers local and state government in year one and moves up to federal government in year two. The group is open to any youth from 7th– 11th grade. Know someone who is not a 4-Her but would be interested in joining? Bring them in and we will sign them up for both. If you would like to join the group or want more information please contact Michael at the Extension Office or via email mrschaub@iastate.edu ASAP.

This year we will have six classes that will help us learn how to become better citizens and indulge us in information about our nation’s capital & federal policy makers. The year will conclude with a full 5 day trip to Washington D.C. and a tour of many attractions in the area. Now is the perfect time to join this amazing opportunity.

You will have a great learning experience and will not a find a cheaper field trip. Just another way that 4-H is working to improve our future and continues to… “Make the Best Better.”

your club submit applicants for the

2014 Meritorious, Honorary and

Alumni Awards. This is a great time to

recognize those volunteers that put in

countless hours each year to support

the 4-H program.

2014 at the Extension Office.

Re-Enrollment on 4-H Online

Beginning September 15th Howard County 4-Hers

will be able to re-enroll for the upcoming year.

and complete the process for re-enrollment after

September 1st. You have until November 30th to

complete or risk losing the assistance for your annu-

al fee. If you need help enrolling online or would like

to apply for membership dues assistance please con-

tact the Extension Office. If you have new members

that will be joining have them come in or call the

Extension Office.

Recruiting New Members

It is once again the time of year to work on new 4-H recruits for the coming 4-H year.

If you know friends or families in your area, person-ally invite them to your next meeting. If you know someone who isn’t quite sure what 4-H is about, share information of what you’ve learned with them and how much fun you have had. Encourage others to step up and join in! You don’t have to have ani-mals or live on a farm to become involved! The op-portunities in 4-H are endless. Remember to get anyone and everyone in 4th-12th grades.

These grants are formed each year with the objective of

stimulating 4-H clubs in Iowa to plan and carry out com-

munity improvement activities by providing “seed money”

needed to make these projects successful. Awards are

given to applicants in amounts between $50 to $500 per
