COUNTY FAIR PREMIUM BOOKS AND ENTRY MATERIALS

Jr. Fair Entries are DUE MONDAY, JULY 2nd BY 4:30 p.m. in

the Extension Office.

The Jr. Fair Premium book and entry forms will be available online at

http://lorain.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/lorain-county-junior-fair

Our office will notify advisors via e-mail when Junior Fairbooks become available in

the office.

ATTENTION ADVISORS & MEMBERS — MANDATORY

For all 4-H participants taking an animal project, they must either attend Skil-

lathon with their completed Project Record Book and have it graded, or have

their completed Project Record Book turned into the Extension Office to have

it graded. All Project Record Books must be graded either at Skillathon if

participating or the Extension Office by July 27, 2018. If you are concerned

that a participant has told you that they went to skillathon but didn’t, the Ex-

tension Office will provide a list of skillathon participants by club.

Project/record books are mandatory for all 4-H projects.

TREASURY TIPS

When doing fundraisers for your 4-H club, please keep these points in mind:

The club needs to vote on the fundraiser. The motion, second, and passing vote approving

the fundraiser must be included in the secretary’s minutes.

The basic purpose of 4-H is youth development. A club must not get side tracked by fund-

raising and lose sight of learning by doing. Keep fundraising to a minimum. One or two spe-

cial activities per year should suffice.

Always give the customer a product or service for their money – games of chances are dis-

couraged.

There should always be a purpose for raising funds – proper record keeping is essential.

At the conclusion of the fundraiser, a complete report must be included in the treasurer’s rec-

ords and a summary report must be included in the secretary’s minutes.

SCHOOL PROJECT VS. 4-H PRO-

JECT

An agreement between the State 4-H

Office and State School Superinten-

dent has stated for years that nothing

submitted for part of a class grade in

school may be shown or judged as

part of a 4-H project. The only excep-

tions are those items representing

school enrichment projects taken

through 4-H.

HEALTH FORM AND RELEASE OF CLAIMS

FORM

RISK MANAGEMENT

Reminder: Club organizational advisors should

have in their files a 4-H Member Health History

Form for each member. Be sure to have parents

supply the information and sign it. Of particular

importance is insurance information and who to

contact when the parent is unable to be reached.

Information on health forms must be treated confi-

dentially.

In addition, The Ohio State University Extension

has a Release of Claims form to be used by 4-H

for club events. It is recommended that each

member participating in a 4-H club activity such as

a field trip, trip to Cedar Point, etc., should turn in

one of these forms signed by a parent or guardi-

an. This form should be kept by the club.

Both of these forms are available on-line at

http://lorain.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-

development/4-h-forms-and-club-management-

resources or at our office.

4-H CLUB POLICIES

Meeting Policy: 4-H Policy says that clubs must hold at least 6 meetings per year. Make a meeting schedule or club calendar and share this with your 4-H families, so everyone is on the same page and knows what is expected of them.

Club Policy: National 4-H Policy states that a 4-H club must have at least five youth from three different families. Please keep this in mind as your clubs are getting started. If you need to get additional club mem-

bers, you may want to have your kids invite some friends to be a part of the club. You are allowed to send

information about your club to school with your child, or post a flyer at the local library, convenience store,

etc. If your club has grown to be as large as you can accommodate, please call the office and let us know

not to send any more new members your way. But, remember, once you cut off taking any more members,

you cannot make an exception for someone special – a particular friend, or family.

4-H Age Requirements All 4-H’ers taking competitive projects (such as livestock, still, nutrition, etc.) must be at least 8 years of age AND in the third grade as of January 1, 2018 to be eligible to enroll in a competi-

tive 4-H project for the 2018 project season. Any youth age 9 or above is eligible for project membership,

regardless of grade level. Likewise, they cannot have reached their 19th birthday by January 1, 2018.

Please keep in mind that youth are in kindergarten AND at least 5 years of age by January 1, 2018 are eligi-

ble for 4-H’s non-competitive Cloverbud program. Please contact the Extension Office for more information

or if you have any questions.

News & Notes Page 7

TRANSPORTING 4-H MEMBERS AND OHIO 4-H HEALTH FORMS The State 4-H office recommends using health forms for use with 4-H club members. The form has space for cell phone and pager numbers to be listed in order to better ensure communication with parents in case of an emergency. Using health forms is one step in risk management as we con-duct 4-H activities. Good risk management would require health forms for each member for over-

nights, field trips, etc. Better risk management would require that the organizational advisor have health forms on all member throughout the year! In addition to the health form there is a Waiver & Permission to Transport form that should be used if parents help transport 4-H members. The club must have a copy of the adults driver’s license, proof of insurance and the “Waiver & Permission to Transport” form for each child being transported. The 4-H office has copies of these forms available or you can download them from our website at: http://lorain.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/4-h-forms-and-club-management-resources

WORKING WITH SPECIAL NEEDS MEMBERS Many clubs have members whose abilities limit them from doing many projects and activities that other members do. It can be a challenge for the member, their families, and advisors to make sure that every-one is getting the most from their 4-H experience. Here are a few suggestions from advisors who have members with special needs in their clubs:

Always include them in the whole club’s events

– business meetings, fundraisers, etc.

Be interactive with all members.

Use the Discovery projects.

Adapt a project for them to develop independent

life experiences.

Be creative & allow them to be creative.

Plan ahead.

Incorporate animals, safely, because the youth

can really enjoy the experience.

SEA CAMP AT KELLEY’S ISLAND
