What is RFID?RFIDstandsforradiofrequencyidentification.RFIDallowsastackofitemstobecheckedinoroutbyradio frequency IDs as opposed to scanning individual barcodes, leading to faster checkout, improved materials security, and automated check-in processes. RFID has been successfully used in libraries in Asia, Europe,andNorthAmericaformorethan15years.InthePacificNorthwest,you’llfindRFIDinlibrariesinMultnomah County, Washington County, Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, Seattle, and many other communities.

When will RFID technology be implemented? The goal for all libraries in Clackamas County is June 2017. We anticipate tagging materials in April-May and implementing the new self-checkout kiosks by June or July. Hoodland Library will be tagged on Sunday (4/30) when they are normally closed, and Sandy Library will be closed for approximately a week (5/1-5/5).

How do libraries use RFID?Libraries place RFID tags in each library item (book, CD, DVD, etc.) and these tags facilitate transactions like check-in and check-out.

How are we paying for this?SandyandHoodlandLibrarieshavebudgetedforRFIDforatleast2budgetcycles,andwewillfinallygetto use this money! We have set aside $75,000 to cover the cost of tags and hardware. We also plan to do somesmallrenovationsatSandyandHoodlandLibrarytohelpusutilizetheefficiencyofRFID.

How is my privacy protected when RFID tags are used to identify library materials?Thelibrary’sRFIDtagswillcarryonlyuniquenumericalidentifiers.Notitle, author, publisherinformation, patron name or use pattern can be found by reading an RFID tag placed in LINCC library materials. Clacka-mas County does not plan to use RFID-enabled library cards at this time. We will continue using barcoded patron cards for the foreseeable future.

ArethereanyhealtheffectsassociatedwithRFID?The World Health Organization (WHO) and many other organizations have conducted extensive research onthepotentialhealtheffectsofexposuretoelectromagneticfields.WHOhasconcludedthatatthefre-quencyusedbylibraryRFIDsystems(13.56MHz),thereisnoevidenceofadverseeffectstogeneralhealthor pregnancy.
