Communication-CollaborationThe potential benefits of ESNs include more interaction, bottom-up communication, idea sharing, crowdsourcing and knowledge management.

Production-ParticipationESNs ‘cut through clutter and have the potential to lift the productivity of knowledge workers by as much as 25 per cent by helping people search forinformation, identify subject matter experts and crowdsource ideas in real time’.

Transformation40% of organisations are now using social media in internal communications.

However 70% of internal communication practitioners rated use of digital channels and social media as poor or average.

Challenges: Dialogue is good…but difficult to maintain

ESNs are best understood as tools to drive ‘real business outcomes and should have support from all parts of the organisation – they’re doomed if seen as a “comms tool I need to use, proudly brought to you by the people in comms”’.
