From The Principal

Welcome to the final Intouch newsletter for 2016I recently had the task of reading the academic reports of over 1000 of the College’s students. It is a personal undertaking of mine to write a positively framed comment on every one of these reports in an effort to encourage our students to a better effort, or higher achievement in the next year/semester.

Our teachers and Heads of Learning Area have become very good over the years at providing insightful and informative comments that state what has been taught over the semester, how the student has performed in that learning program and at least one or two suggestions as to how their performance could be improved in the next semester.

There are many Gilmore College students who perform at a very high level and they are to be congratulated on their efforts. Most notably, there are also a number of our students who struggle, but give their best effort – these are the absolute heroes of our College – those who keep trying even when their results are not improving significantly. I urge all of these students to continue to give their best effort because our experience in education tells us that a student who persists, is committed to their studies (regardless of ability) and attends regularly (at least 90%) has a far greater chance at success than students who do not set these standards for themselves.

2016 has certainly thrown its challenges at the world and of course, by association, this means we have faced our fair share of challenges in the Kwinana Community. I would like to thank the staff of the College for their support of our fantastic students and their families through some extremely difficult times in 2016.

The Gilmore College Board has performed exceptionally throughout the year. The Board has delivered a new constitution, code of conduct, represents a huge cross-section of the parent body and the wider community/industry, has delivered efficiencies in governance and community development and helped deliver a new Business Plan for the College.

I would like to formally acknowledge the contributions of our outgoing Board members. Parents Leah Gordon and Katie Heath have completed 4 years and 1 year on the board respectively. Leah and Katie will be replaced by Lisa Alai-Alesana and Justin Paul on our Board for two year terms. Yvonne Hammill is also ending her long involvement with the College Board to concentrate on her other community support endeavours and, at the time of printing, we are still in the process of determining a suitable community representative replacement for Yvonne using our board selection processes. Staff members Sophia D’Rozario and Jessica Hammill will stand down from the Board for 2017 and be replaced by Daniel Szewczak. Board Chair, Mandy Grubb and I are eternally grateful to Leah, Katie, Yvonne, Sophia and

Jessica for the support that they have given to the governance of the College (and in some cases as far back as Kwinana SHS) over the years.

The other group that launched this year was our Parent Social Group. My thanks to Yvonne Hammill and parents Leah Gordon, Huda Rashid, Lisa Alai-Alesana and Ida McCracken who have been regulars at these meetings in 2016. As we enter 2017 it would be great to see this group continue to develop as a voice among the parent body – a safe place to come and share your personal challenges with raising and educating teenaged students with other parents who are facing the same issues. Please watch our website calendar for the dates of these meetings from early in the year.

I look forward to a happy 2017 where we continue to work together to build Kwinana’s Independent Public School. It has been a pleasure to celebrate our students’ successes in ATAR pathways, University Entrance, VET courses, sporting achievements, the musical, robotics tournaments, History competitions, Literacy week, science fairs, film projects and the opening of the Trade Training Centre this year.

Finally I would like to farewell our departing staff and wish them every success in their endeavours.

As a College we would like extend to all of our parents, carers, staff and students the warmest wishes for a happy and safe Christmas and New Year holiday.

Commonwealth Bank WorkshopOver the last few weeks, students from Years 9 and 10 have had the pleasure of attending a range of Commonwealth Bank financial seminars, as part of the Economics and Business program. The presenter Lula delivered hour long sessions on the following topics:

Smartsaving Entrepreneurship Rights of Employee Earning

Students were deeply engaged because of the sense of humour, personal stories and relevant information that were used.

The Girls ProgramThis term members of the Aboriginal girls program - ‘The Spirit of the Sista Girlz” - have worked with a local fitness coach and mentor Linda Winmar-Farmer.

Each week the girls underwent rigourous training and fitness sessions with Linda in the College’s gymnasium. The sessions were designed to build self-esteem, to teach the girls about looking after themselves, and having respect for themselves and others. The girls enjoyed the program and each week the numbers increased.

The program is still in its infancy and development. The College has explored a number of pathways to increase the program in conjunction with the David Wirrpanda Foundation.

We look forward to the program development increasing in 2017.

Gilmore College is very fortunate to be working in partnership with ACEPT – SM TAFE, Honeywell and Quadrant Energy to provide training and industry experience for the young people of the Kwinana/Peron area.

All training in Process Operations will be conducted by lecturers from ACEPT – SM TAFE using state of the art technology/software and specialised equipment generously provided by Honeywell.

A HUGE thank you to Ms Glanville and Ms Tennant for leading the Hospitably students in providing the most scrumptious afternoon tea for our visitors.

It’s interesting to note that many left with ‘doggy bags’ in hand as the food was too good to leave behind.

Peron Trade Training Centre Grand OpeningThe Peron Trade Training Centre was officially opened by Senator Dean Smith on Friday 18 November 18 with over 120 invited dignitaries and guests in attendance.

The event was a resounding success with Gilmore’s Inaugural Process Plant Operation students being recognised as the first of many groups to undergo training at this world class facility.

We would like to thank JCY architects and urban designers, Mitie Construction, the staff from ACEPT and industry supporters as this has been a real ‘team effort’ in getting our fabulous Centre ready for operation in February 2017.

Our students are the winners.

Gilmore College Year 6 to 7 Transition ProgramYear 6 students from our six feeder primary schools have been participating in transition days at Gilmore College during Term 4. The students experienced a variety of taster courses in a secondary high school context.

The students participated in a diverse range of 20 minute lessons including all-time favourites such as cooking, robotics, physical education and drama. They also experienced Maths, Humanities and Social Science, Science and English classes and discovered there are both commonalities and differences between the way these learning areas are taught in primary and secondary settings.

The students were also introduced to key members of our Student Services team so that they will confidently know where to access the College chaplain, nurse, psychologist and Year Coordinators. Mr Smith and our Associate Principals warmly welcomed the students to Gilmore College.

The Year 6 students were ably assisted by our Years 10 and 11 Student Transition Leaders. These students escorted the students to their classes and to their subject teachers. Navigating a large high school with multiple learning spaces is quite a challenge for new students. The Student Transition Leaders’ valuable contribution was very much appreciated.

We look forward to the Year 6 students joining the Gilmore College community in 2017.

2016 Gilmore College ValedictoryOn Tuesday 25 October, Year 12 students, their families, staff and special guests attended the 2016 Gilmore College Valedictory Ceremony. The College gymnasium was transformed into a function venue for the occasion, and we celebrated the achievements of our Year 12 students. There were many award winners who were recognised for their hard work and efforts. We congratulate all students on the achievement of completing 12 years of schooling, and who were presented on the night.

We thank everyone who helped make the night such a success, including the families and friends who attended, and staff and students whose work behind the scenes ensured an enjoyable night.

We wish success, happiness and good fortune in the future to every member of the Gilmore College Class of 2016.

The Leeuwin IIIn November, Nathan Wasson, from the Work Connect program, won a scholarship through the KIC iDIVERSITY Project to sail on the Leeuwin’s Ultimate Challenge voyage.

During the five day voyage Nathan experienced the fun of sailing on a tall ship, he climbed the 33m main mast, steered the ship from the helm, took part in the night watch & made new friends.

Nathan has since been invited by the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation to return as a volunteer crew member on short sail. Congratulations Nathan, we are very proud of all you have achieved.Nathan sent the following letter to the KIC iDiversity Project thanking them for the opportunity:

Dear KIC iDiversity, thank you for nominating me to go on the ultimate challenge on the Leeuwin. One of my favourite things I completed was to climb the

main mast and I made new friends.

The crew were wonderful and supported me through this expereince. I really enjoyed this expereince because it taught me alot of new skills. I enjoyed this experience so much I am hoping to return to further develop my sailing knowledge.Thank you again for your sponsorship.

Splendid Hospitality StudentsThe Year 11 Hospitality students had a busy year catering for many functions. Term 4 in particular was very hectic with functions such as morning tea and lunch for 400 guests for the Gilmore College Federation Day, three course meal for 80 guests for the Dialogue Café, supper for 600 guests for the Year 12 graduation and afternoon tea for 120 guests for the Grand Opening of the Processing Plant.

The students enthusiastically gave their full support, even though many hours were spent outside of the school day. I am proud of the professional manner in which the students conducted themselves, and their dedication to achieving their best.

As a reward, students were taken on an excursion into Perth and Northbridge and participated in an ‘Asian Foodi Tour’.

The ‘Foodi Tour’ included a lovely Malay Chicken Curry at Thai Delish – and ‘delish’ it was. The tour also included a visit to an Asian seafood market. The students were amazed at the cost of fresh lobsters and crabs as well as other live produce, such as abalone.

Setting up for the Dialogue Cafe

We then sampled black fungi, fermented bamboo shoots and other interesting foods at a Chinese Hot Pot restaurant, and lastly dessert at an Asian Dessert Bar. A great time was had by all. Special thanks to Rebecca Tennant for her help and ongoing support.

Microsoft Office 365 Pro

FREE for all StudentsDo you wish your child could get Microsoft Office to create their assignment with?

Do you wish they had access to a place where they could store their work and more until they are ready to hand it in?

Are funds tight and you just can’t afford these tools?

Then stress no more. The Department of Education has generously provided Microsoft Office and Microsoft OneDrive free of charge to all students attending a public school.

All you need is an internet connection to download and install the software. Students can’t do this at any school, so it will have to be done at home or somewhere where you have access to the internet.

How do I do this you may ask?

Click the link below and it will open a document from the department that will explain this very process. Alternatively copy and paste the link to your web browser.

http://www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/ocs/detcms/cms-service/download/asset/?asset_id=17434549

This document will point you in the right direction on how to install Microsoft Office 365 Pro, for FREE. Just follow the directions and you will have it installed in about an hour, depending on the download speed of your internet.

AttendanceStatistics tell us that attendance AND engagement at school (this means coming to school and attending and participating in every class) not only enhances students’ academic performance, but is a major contributing factor to stable and positive mental health.

The Department of Education insists that 90% attendance is required for students to succeed at school and I can confirm this after reading the reports. There is almost a direct link between the number of half day absences and the grades in the report. As 2016 draws to a close and start making promises to ourselves and resolutions for 2017, can I respectfully ask that we make attending school and engaging while we are there a priority for the next 12 months and see where that takes us as a College?

My guess is that it will have a positive impact on everything from student results to their states of mind.

My thanks to all parents and carers who daily make the effort to ensure that students attend the College with the required equipment, uniform and breakfast – you are setting them up for the best possible day that you can.

Payments can be made by; Eftpos, Cash, Direct Deposit and BPAY.

Voluntary Contribution Years 7 - 10 Contributions in WA Government schools are set at a maximum of $235 per student for a nominal curriculum. Funds raised from school contributions and charges are expended on texts and consumables essential for teaching which is not supplied by the Government. Examples of these expenses are textbooks, photocopy materials, computer/digital items, cooking ingredients, materials for art, design and technology and science activities.

As part of the school budgeting process, a portion of each $235 is allocated to each learning area.

Senior School Years 11 and 12The College offers a variety of courses in Years 11 and 12. Requirements for materials, equipment resources and textbooks vary widely. For some courses the College supplies all materials and resources in return for the payment of a hire or resource charge; in other subjects there is a reduced charge, but a requirement that students purchase textbooks.

Charges will depend upon the course chosen. Some specific courses will incur higher costs dependent upon such items as text, subject specific resources, materials, excursions, certificates and work placement. 50% of the subject charges are required to be paid prior to the first day of the new school year. The balance is required to be paid by the end of Term 1 (unless a payment plan has been arranged).

First Lego LeagueCongratulations to the members of Gilmore Robotics Club who successfully completed the FIRST Lego League Animal Allies Robots Competition held at Curtin University on 27 November.

These students are Year 7’s Joshua Comben (Team Leader), Jack Edwards, Louie Reeves, Drew Scott, Bethany Starling, Shannon Thompson, Cyrus Vince, Blair Walker; Year 8 Lily Masters and Year 9 Jacob Comben. Most of the students were accompanied by their parents and siblings. One parent commented “What the kids accomplished was amazing, fun, exciting and the skills they learn will last for a lifetime. “

The FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an annual robotics competition for upper primary and middle school students (ages 9-14) held at Curtin University. Teams of about 10 member students build, program and compete with a Lego Robot, while also learning about modern problem in science and engineering and developing workable solutions for it. The

participating teams were double the size of last year to about 54 teams. The venue was divided into two group venues; Curtin Stadium venue had 30 teams while the Curtin engineering venue had 24 teams. The competitions were divided into four categories namely Robot Games, Robot Design, Project Solution and Core Values.

Maths PuzzleMove three coins (only) in the first diagram to turn

the triangle upside down.

The first three students to respond to Mr Asif will receive a certificate. (Answer in the next newsletter).

In the Curtin Stadium (30 teams), the Gilmore College Team ranked 8th in the Robot games, 4th in the Project with Innovative solution and the Core Values with inspiration, the team was ranked 5th. The Gilmore College Team did not receive any major awards, but the performance ranking proved that even with limited resources, they have outranked, bested other schools and belonged in the top ten among the 30 teams participating in the Curtin Stadium group. Overall rankings among the 54 teams were not available as of press time.

Resilience paid off The Robot Games went without drama. When the Gilmore team checked the competition board layout, the team realised that some set-up was different from what they practised at school. One member, Lily Masters, was so frustrated and was crying in one corner saying “We have 20 minutes left before the start of the competition and our robot was not ready. We spent hours preparing at school for nothing”. However, 10 minutes before the Robot Game started, the team got a chance in a nearby practise board. Lily did not lose hope and re-programmed the robot. When the robot competition started, all fingers were crossed.

The siren for the 2 minutes and 30 second timer sounded and the whole team including the parents cheered and jumped for joy. The Gilmore robot did not only perform the challenge successfully, but garnered high scores for the top 10. See photo snapshot of the screen above for the standings.
