Discover MoreClonakilty is located on the spectacular south west coast and has so much to offer, from the bustling streets flush with colour, the quirky traditional shops to the delectable cuisine served in the selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. “Clon” as locals like to call it, is well known for its distinctive local produce with Clonakilty Black Pudding being a must to taste when visiting the town! Famously known as the birthplace of General Michael Collins “Clon” is where you can delve deeper into the history of this Irish Revolutionary. Why not visit the Michael Collins statue in the town centre and the Michael Collins House just a short walk away on Emmet Square. A 6km drive west from the town centre to Ballinoroher is the Michael Collins Centre and a scenic countryside area steeped in Irish history.

Coastal This Wild Atlantic Way coastline is home to many jaw dropping viewpoints, glorious beaches and rugged coastal roads. Just 5km from Clonakilty is Inchydoney beach where you can walk along its expansive golden strand and swim in the shimmering blue water. Further west along the coast is the stunning Galley Head, elevated over 100m above the sea this rocky headland overlooks exceptional beaches giving panoramic views of Owenahincha beach and Rosscarbery Bay. Continue west along the spectacular coastline to enjoy mesmerising views of the Atlantic Ocean, spotting whales and dolphins along the way. Take a boat trip to Cape Clear, discover Mizen Head Irelands most southerly point and a don’t miss a visit to the lighthouse at Sheeps Head.

East 10km from Clonakilty you will find the beautiful village of Timoleague, perched at the edge of a long sea inlet and dominated by the ruins of a 13th Century Franciscan Abbey. Nearby lies Courtmacsherry, home to beautiful walks, most notably “The Seven Head’s Walk” a 42.5km walk around the peninsula which boasts the second highest cliffs in Ireland, the Coolum Cliffs. A 35km drive from “Clon” is Kinsale. Stroll the charming narrow streets and be amazed by the panoramic harbour views from Charles Fort. Dine in one of the many exceptional restaurants that are found in the gourmet capital of Ireland. 53km from Clonakilty is the compact city of Cork and where you will find a true blend of old and new. Contemporary art in historic buildings, chic cocktails in the Victorian Quarter and people of all ages revelling in the buzzing city atmosphere.

West 32km from Clonakilty is the vibrant town of Skibbereen, rich in history and culture. Check out the Skibbereen Heritage Centre in the restored Old Gasworks Building on the banks of Lough Hyne . Make memories with a magical moonlight kayak trip on the Lough with the chance to enjoy wildlife and landscape in silhouette. Bantry, with its high mountain ridges and cascading mountain streams is where you can stop by the stately Bantry House to soak up incredible views across the expansive Bantry Bay stretching out to the Beara Peninsula. The Beara Peninsula stretches for a distance of 48km from Glengarriff, to Dursey Island, Allihies and back to Kenmare. Dursey Island at the tip is accessible only via its iconic cable car, suspended 250 metres above the sea an experience you will not forget. From this beautiful peninsula start The Beara Breifne Way, a 206km route combines stunning coastal scenery and rugged mountain landscapes with village life dotted in between all the way to Ballyhoura Country in North Cork.

North Cork is rich in heritage with many centuries’ old castles, round towers and other historic sites. Beyond the town of Macroom 40km from Clonakilty is Gaeltacht Mhúscraí where Irish is the spoken language and social and cultural traditions are passionately maintained. Explore the beautiful Lee Valley to see The Gearagh, the remains of an ancient post glacial alluvial forest. Bask in the tranquillity of Gougane Barra National Forest Park. Further north, The Blackwater Way, a 164km route passing through beautiful countryside and the towns of Fermoy and Mallow follow the path of the majestic River Blackwater as you hike. Ballyhoura Country, a scenic region stretching across the counties of Tipperary, Limerick and Cork. Trek into the wilderness and roam scenic walking trails or take a spin on a rugged mountain biking trail such as the Greenwood Loop. Explore the ancient passageways of Mitchelstown Cave.
