NES East Region Office Staff on the MSU for Basic Life Support Course

The MSU visited Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for its annual stock check and inspection by the CS MEN Team. During the MSU’s visit CS MEN held a Basic Life Support (BLS) course on the Unit for the NES East Region Office. The office had just received a brand new Lifeline Defibrillator so the timing was perfect. Ten enthusiastic members of staff took part in the course that was delivered by our own Regional Champion (North), Jerry Morse. Feedback from this valuable training included:

Janet Skinner at Conference in Hong KongIn February Janet Skinner our Regional Champion (South East) along with four colleagues from the Centre for Medical Education (Debbie Aitken, Gill Aitken, Sarah Doyle and Lisa MacInnes), were asked to go to Hong Kong to speak at their first Medical Education Conference and visit some of their simulation facilities. Though this was their first medical education event, there were some great discussions and really interesting presentations from the local team on topics such as the flipped classroom, inter professional learning and clinical clerkships. The Edinburgh Team did the University and CS MEN proud and gave a number of outstanding talks on teaching professionalism, clinical skills, simulation and showcasing both the MSc and clinical educator programmes.

Faculty Development CoursesThe Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors (SCSCHF) delivered three excellent MSU Faculty Development Courses in February and March. The courses were attended by 17 individuals with the majority being from the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) and Special Operations Response Team (SORT).

IM Injections Workshop, DundeeOn 24 March 2015, 15 health care professionals came to the NES offices in the East to attend a workshop on Intramuscular (IM) Injections delivered by Paul Smith (Lecturer in Nursing, University of Dundee) and Veronica O’Carroll (University of Dundee). This was linked to the new CS MEN resource on IM injections which trainees had to complete prior to attending the workshop. All rated the workshop as either excellent or good and all reported an increase in their knowledge required for IM injections after attending the workshop.

“It has been an added joy to watch CS MEN and the MSU go from strength to strength over the last 5 years delivering with such style on so many of things that I hold dear: innovation, quality, education, connectivity, relationships and people. What we have achieved is absolutely a jewel in the NES crown and I fully expect CS MEN to continue evolving, developing, innovating and delivering for the foreseeable future.”

Professor Philip CachiaProfessor Philip Cachia, NES Lead for Clinical Skills and Patient Safety, decided it was time to move onto the next chapter in his life – retirement! Philip’s departing words included:

EMRS Team on the MSUDr Richard Price, Consultant, Royal Alexandria Hospital, had the privilege of spending a morning with the EMRS Team at the Clyde Heliport familiarising them with the MSU. He was also given a guided tour of their new base and even got to see inside the Emergency Helicopter. The EMRS and SAS team members utilised the Unit for three days training to develop the simulation writing and debriefing skills learnt at the Faculty Development Courses.

SCSN ConferenceThe MSU had pride of place outside the beautiful setting of Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries for this year’s SCSN Conference. We welcomed delegates from across the UK, Finland and Kansas on board the Unit and all were very keen to hear about how the MSU is used and the facilities available. Michael Moneypenny, Director of the SCSCHF delivered two excellent workshops entitled “Critical Incidents and Human Factors” to over 30 delegates. We also welcomed the Simulation Technicians onto the Unit for their Special Interest Group Meeting.

Scottish Medical Conference - CS MEN Workshop ‘Bringing humour into skills education and practice’Our Clinical Lead Jean Ker along with Anna O’Neill our Regional Champion (West) and Rodney Mountain, Innovation Lead, AHSP, developed a pilot workshop for educators on “Connecting not communicating – the use of humour with patients and colleagues”. The workshop was a great success with a good turnout and great ideas for future development.

BASICS Scotland App LaunchThe Deputy First Minister John Swinney launched the BASICS Scotland app. The app provides access to clinical documents, clinical information, resuscitation algorithms and a series of training videos. In addition, novel features include an equipment checklist of all the equipment recommended that responders carry with them and the ability to complete a patient report form online and e-mail it to a secure NHS e-mail address. The app also has GPS system which identifies the nearest hospital, the travel time to that hospital and contact information for the hospital and its A & E Department.

MSU Visit to Mull and IonaIn the first week of May the Unit visited Mull where Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Piers Massey, fresh from the MSU Faculty Development Course, organised a full training programme. The skills weeks had a great turnout from staff with everyone agreed they had enjoyed learning in such a dynamic way.

OneNES Conference – CS MEN StandBeverley and Anne had a great day in May when around 150 NES employees gathered at the Edinburgh Conference Centre for the inaugural NES Staff Conference. CS MEN had been asked to provide an exhibition stand for the event so loaded up with our new pop ups, resource information cards and an Intra Muscular Injections Manikin we headed off.

It was a busy and interactive day and during the breaks we had plenty of visitors to our stand mainly thanks to our new pop ups and the “bottom” sitting on our table. They were great conversation starters and allowed us to talk to many NES colleagues about the work of CS MEN, the MSU and our educational resources.

“I am a lone worker – in a remote and rural community hospital – so this is a really good way for me to update/improve on clinical skills relevant to my work.”

“Very useful to be able to get feedback on how I perform on simulated scenarios.”

2015Exercise “Jura”A multi-agency training exercise “Jura” took place within the Sound of Islay both on and off the coastlines of Islay & Jura with three separate incidents to test a multi-agency response. Joe Hughes, Paramedic Team Leader, led the Exercise which proved to be both rewarding and challenging due to the cross-agency working achieved and the poor weather which added to the challenges.

“This type of exercise was made possible with the multi-agency training we carry out with our colleagues on the NHS Education for Scotland MSU annually and as part of a rural setting, this helps to build team working and breakdown barriers which may have otherwise been there.”

New Head of the MSU Steering GroupWe were delighted to welcome Elaine Mead, Chief Executive NHS Highland as Chair of MSU Steering Group. Elaine brings her wealth of experience and knowledge of delivering care across remote and rural Scotland to the Group.

Jerry Morse PhD.The Team was delighted to congratulate Jerry Morse our Regional Champion (North) on being awarded his PhD

Not only did the Team demonstrate the Unit’s capabilities and the work of CS MEN to a wide range or NHS staff, Shona Robison made a return visit to the Unit talking to the Team about its development and success since she launched it in 2008.

MSU visit to Shetland – Stroke & TIA Assessment TrainingLynn Reid, Head of Education Programmes, travelled to Shetland to deliver Stroke and TIA Assessment Training (STAT) on the MSU to local health professionals ranging from Assistant Director of Nursing through to student nurses. Fort William VisitAnother successful visit of the Unit to Fort William thanks to Andrew MacGillvray, Practice Educator/Paramedic Team Leader. Not only did a wide range of staff receive training on the Unit but when one of the local councillors heard about the MSU he decided he must visit it. He was so impressed that he wants the Unit to provide education for all in the Lochaber district on its next visit. Watch this space.
