University of Liverpool Department of Nursing Clinical Nursing Skills Inventory This inventory forms an important part of your Portfolio of Education, and is to guide and record your acquisition of clinical skills throughout your studies. This inventory will help you maintain a record of the skills you have acquired during clinical placements, together with the procedures in which you have participated. It can be used to help focus discussion with your academic tutor, your clinical mentor and the University Teachers of Clinical Skills and so help identify future learning needs. Guidelines The inventory identifies nursing skills and the level of development expected in the Common Foundation programme and the Adult Branch programme. Some skills may require further development before you achieve full competence and you should expect to consolidate these post-registration. The inventory forms part of the evidence of achievement that you will use to demonstrate to your mentor how you are meeting the competency standards during your placement. You will find it helpful to review this inventory prior to, and following clinical placements and identify, with the help of your clinical mentor, the opportunities available for clinical skills development during the placement, and those skills to be focused on during your next experience. The student can use the inventory to identify skills/procedures that s/he has not observed or practiced, enabling the student to negotiate suitable experiences in order to become competent in these skills and procedures. It is expected that you will review the inventory on completion of each clinical module with your academic tutor, and using the key given below, record the appropriate level of skills acquisition. You should date and initial each completed entry. If you feel you require further support to reach the expected level of skills acquisition then you should contact the University Teachers of Clinical Skills, and/ or your academic tutor.
