ABOUT THE SEMINAR Climate change poses the single greatest obstacle to reducing poverty and inequality and promoting prosperity and stability. There is powerful evidence that Climate change could roll back decades of development gains and seriously threaten future development prospects, forcing millions more people to live in poverty. Recognising this, the year 2015 witnessed two landmark international events: the historic climate change agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris in December 2015 and the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in September 2015.

Climate change and sustainable development are the two major challenges of the 21st century. Climate change is considered as one of the most critical challenges for Sustainable Development. This is due to the fact that climate change can alter the paths and levels of future sustainable growth and development. Therefore climate change issue is part of the larger challenge of sustainable development. Climate change must be confronted with sustainable development principles constantly in mind, an understanding that is reflected in the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change.

North Eastern Region is critical from climate change and sustainable development perspective as over 80% of the population in the region is basically rural and depends on climate-sensitive natural resources such as agriculture, forest biodiversity and water availability. However, despite these facts the impact of climate change on regions like northeast India are less explored despite being viewed as a region being more sensitive to climate change.

Keeping this in mind, this National Conference is being organized by Teachers of Nagaland University with an objective to discuss strategies and share ideas on this issue of contemporary importance. On behalf of the Teachers’Association and organizing committee, we invite you to participate in this conference.
