History of Earth Day
Established in 1970
More than 192 countries contribute- thats over
a billion people!
Celebrated on April 22nd every year
Founded by: John McConnell, Gaylord Nelson,
and Denis Hayes.
Why the Big Hype?
This holiday may not get you out of class or work but
none the less it is a very important day. Every day we
get up and without even thinking about it we start
using Earths resources (water, electricity, and gas).
Earth Day gives us a chance to take off the blinders and
take a look at how we are treating our environment. We
need our environment and everything in it to survive
and flourish, so one day out of 365 to examine and
contribute to a greener environment, is a very big deal.

Just as Duke Energy and many other companies in the St. Petersburg area advance towards
healthier and greener production models, so can
you! There are so many ways to help the world
we live in and if everyone contributed just
imagine how beautiful and healthy Mother
Nature would look and feel. Here are some
ways in which YOU as an individual can make
a difference

Renewable Energy: Duke Energy is developing innovative renewable power
projects. In addition to their existing
hydroelectric power generation, Duke is
investing in wind, solar, bio-power, and
landfill gas.
Global Climate Change: Duke Energy has established absolute and intensity-
based carbon reduction goals for their
corporation.
Advancing Low-Carbon Technologies: By replacing older, coal-fired generation
with new, advanced-technology coal and
natural gas plants, Duke Energy is
delivering cleaner energy from a diverse
mix of fuel sources.
Energy Efficiency: Using energy more efficiently helps reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Duke Energy views energy
efficiency as the fifth fuel as important as coal, natural gas, renewable sources
and nuclear for the communitys desire in
meeting energy demands.
