Partnership Academy: What did they do?


Empowering Youth as Environmental Advocates

• 5th and 6th graders explored food production and issues facing pollinators

• Researched plants needed to protect wildlife and pollinators

• Worked in pairs to design pollinator friendly gardens for the school

• K-6 students voted for their favorite wildlife garden design

• Planted pollinator plants and the winning youth garden design around the school

• Held a Garden Party to celebrate their Certified Wildlife Habitat for their families

Partnership Academy: What difference did it make?


Partnership Academy asked their students our two required questions

1. I want to keep learning about the environment

2. I think I can make a difference in protecting the environment

Do not report percentages. We need to add all the results together.

Of the 57 students surveyed at Partnership Academy:

• 26 students want to keep learning about the environment

• 36 students think they can make a difference in protecting the environment

Phillips Environmental Action Project

Waite House

Lead by a team of 10 teens from the neighborhood

• Known as the “PEAPs” (Phillips Environmental Action Project)

• Trained to execute hands-on environmental activities at community events in the Phillips neighborhood from April-October

• Mentored and empowered to advocate for the environment

The teens spoke to Waite House families and lead environmental activities around recycling and waste reduction at events

• Global Youth Service Day

• Summer Day Camp “Recycled Arts Camp”

• Phillips Music Festival

• Recycling & Waste Reduction Art Installation- Community Café

• Phillips Clean Sweep Hennepin County Environment and Energy

Waite House

• PEAPs teens designed and lead each activity

• The PEAPs wanted to adapt the original plan and engage individuals that weren’t coming to Waite House

• Two events were prioritized - the Phillips Music Festival and Phillips Clean Sweep

• Open to the broader community, and Waite House families were encouraged to participate

• In October, they joined the annual Phillips Clean Sweep planning committee.

• This community clean-up has been occurring for over 20 years and focuses more on community building than environmental sustainability.

• In the past, everything collected from city streets, gutters, and alleys has been disposed of as trash - no recycling!

• The PEAPs advocated for sorting of collected materials for recycling.

• It took convincing to restructure an event that has been done for many years, but the PEAPs prevailed!

• The PEAPs received public recognition from the Midtown Phillips organization for their outstanding leadership!

Win-win

• Youth were happy that their decisions allowed them to talk to and engage more people, plus they had a larger impact on the community.

• Staff realized that plugging into existing events allowed them to focus and support the PEAPs environmental activities, instead of focusing on organizing an event.


Hennepin County 4H and Minneapolis Park and Rec

• Due to COVID-19, the Urban Explorers 4-H Day Camp moved entirely on-line

• Via Zoom naturalists from Minneapolis Park and Recreation joined as guest speakers

• Campers got to learn about the career pathways of guest naturalists and the various responsibilities and interests they have in their jobs

• On Tuesdays campers were provided a live animal show of a nature center’s reptiles and amphibians

• On Thursdays campers participated in a live demonstration of how to assemble a bird feeder, learned how to care for a bird feeder, and were guided in observing birds
