Top Tip

A polygon can have any number of sides greater than 3.

It must be an enclosed shape.

All its sides must be straight.

Count the number of sides.

There are five, so it is a pentagon.

Two rectangles.

What shape is this?

There are six sides, so it is a hexagon.

If the rectangles are arranged like this, what shape

is it now?

There are eight sides, so it is an

octagon.

All the shapes we have made are polygons. They are all enclosed and have straight lines.

This is not a polygon.

It is not one enclosed area.

What other polygon names do you know?

Do you know the name for shapes which have four sides?

These include squares and rectangles.
