A Readability Formula
NEXT
FLESCH-KINCAID GRADE LEVEL READABILITY FORMULA In 1948, Rudolph Flesch, an author, and a supporter of Plain English Movement, created the Reading Ease Readability Formula. This formula tests the ease or difficulty with which a document may be read.
In 1976 the US Navy modified the Reading Ease formula to produce a grade-level score. John Kincaid helped to modify the Formula, so today It has been renamed the Flesch Kincaid Grade Level Readability Formula
The US Government Department of Defense uses Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula as a standard test; however, this Formula is best suited in the field of education..

The Flesh-Kincaid Readability FormulaThis formula is based on two items:
1. The average number of words used per sentence.
2. The average number of syllables per word.
Analyzing the results is a simple exercise. A score of 5.0 indicates a fifth grade reading level. A score of 9.0 means that a ninth grader would be able to read the document.
This readability score makes it easier for teachers, parents, librarians, and others to judge the readability level of various books and texts for students.

If your text scores above 12th grade, then follow these simple writing tips to reduce the complexity of your writing:
1. Write below the 8th-grade level. .Studies show that writing below the 8th-grade (preferably around 5-6th grade levels) achieves the best results.
