NOTE BY MILES MALLESON
Jt began with-a-€hrisr.mas prercnr:-arr-edition of Molie.e,liihthe French on one side of the stage and a more or less literal translationopposite. I read The Miser, and thought whar a pity that the literaltranslation made it impossible for our theatre today. I tried re-writing a'few scenes, making the dialogue easier to speak, and then worked overit again, and once again-each time getting less literal but, as I hope, more actable. Until finally my attempt has beeh-nqt to make a literaltranslation, far from it-but to "translate" the play, to carry it across fromthe French stage of nearly three hundied years ago to the English stageof tedav.
