Working with non-verbal or unintelligible children can be challenging. Tradional therapy approaches are not always effecve. This seminar will introduce parcipants to four clinically proven intervenons to produce funconal, vocal behavior in non- verbal or unintelligible children. Discussed in detail will be: the use of music, rhythm and rhyme; coarculaon strategies; oral placement therapy (OPT); and the SMILE approach (Sensory, Motor, Interacon, Language and Experimental Learning). The material presented will isolate specific deficits that need to be idenfied to determine where to start therapy. Reasons for failure in therapy will be addressed including ineffecve movaon techniques, unidenfied muscle weakness, failure to integrate the sensory systems and ineffecve connected speech techniques. Training techniques for each of theses four areas will be discussed to help parcipants recognize and successfully treat these obstacles that hinder successful therapy outcomes. (Focus will be children ages 2-10 years.) SPEAKERS 1. List three components of a verbally encing song for young children. 2. Explain how to select a target for therapy using phonological processes from a gestural point of view, and then how to sequence a string of syllables into the funconal phrase known as a coarculaon run. She has recently wrien and published a parent training book entled WE CAN TALK as well as other related products which serve as simple, engaging speech pracce for young children. Rachel connues to work full me with infants, toddlers, and their families in an early intervenon program in Minneapolis. Renee Roy Hill, MS, CCC-SLP, has over ten years of clinical experience working with children who are non-verbal or unintelligible. For several years Renee was clinical director of Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson & Associates and currently has a private pracce, Crossroads Therapy Clinic, in New Braunfels, TX. She has received specialized training in muscle placement therapy, sensory integraon techniques, feeding intervenons, NDT, Hannen, TAMO, and PROMPT. Renee has also presented her areas of experse at numerous state associaon meengs. Chrisne L. Harkness, MS, CCC-SLP, is a praccing speech-language pathologist with 30 years of experience with infants, children and adults who present with a wide range of cognive, communicaon and swallowing disorders. Chrisne has developed the mul-sensory based SMILE approach (sensory, motor, interacon, language and experimental learning) to facilitate funconal communicaon and uses each key element in the assessment and treatment of children with ausm spectrum disorders, developmental disabilies and sensory processing disorders. Steven Siegelman, MS, CCC-SLP, has been a praccing speech-language pathologist for over 25 years. Steven has studied the literature of coarculaon and arculatory phonology for many years and recently has developed a comprehensive coarculaon therapy program that improves speech intelligibility for children who are unintelligible at the connected speech level.
