Working with non-verbal or unintelligible children can be challenging. Traditional therapy approaches are not always effective. This seminar will introduce participants to four clinically proven interventions to produce functional, vocal behavior in non-verbal or unintelligible children. Discussed in detail will be: the use of music, rhythm and rhyme; coarticulation strategies; oral placement therapy (OPT); and the SMILE approach (Sensory, Motor, Interaction, Language and Experimental Learning).
The material presented will isolate specific deficits that need to be identified to determine where to start therapy. Reasons for failure in therapy will be addressed including ineffective motivation techniques, unidentified muscle weakness, failure to integrate the sensory systems and ineffective connected speech techniques. Training techniques for each of theses four areas will be discussed to help participants recognize and successfully treat these obstacles that hinder successful therapy outcomes. (Focus will be children ages 2-10 years.)
SPEAKERS
1. List three components of a verbally enticing song for young children. 2. Recall ten songs used to facilitate language, interaction, speech, and gross motor imitation.
3. Explain how articulation skill development can be assessed based on a muscle system approach.
4. Apply three therapy techniques for assessing and treating children with oral placement disorders.
5. Summarize sensory systems and their integrative functions.
6. Develop and implement functional assessment and intervention strategies utilizing sensory integrative techniques.
7. Discuss the critical role coarticulation, based on articulatory phonology, plays in the production of speech and why it has a crucial role in the success of therapy.
8. Explain how to select a target for therapy using phonological processes from a gestural point of view, and then how to sequence a string of syllables into the functional phrase known as a coarticulation run.

for the Non-Verbal Child or the Child With Unintelligible Speech:Taking Another Look at Treatment Options
Rachel Arntson, MS, CCC-SLP, has been a speech-language pathologist in the Minneapolis area since 1980 with a specific interest in using music to enhance the speech and language skills of children, especially those who are non-verbal or unintelligible. She has recently written and published a parent training book entitled WE CAN TALK as well as other related products which serve as simple, engaging speech practice for young children. Rachel continues to work full time with infants, toddlers, and their families in an early intervention program in Minneapolis.
Renee Roy Hill, MS, CCC-SLP, has over ten years of clinical experience working with children who are non-verbal or unintelligible. For several years Renee was clinical director of Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson & Associates and currently has a private practice, Crossroads Therapy Clinic, in New Braunfels, TX. She has received specialized training in muscle placement therapy, sensory integration techniques, feeding interventions, NDT, Hannen, TAMO, and PROMPT. Renee has also presented her areas of expertise at numerous state association meetings.
Christine L. Harkness, MS, CCC-SLP, is a practicing speech-language pathologist with 30 years of experience with infants, children and adults who present with a wide range of cognitive, communication and swallowing disorders. Christine has developed the multi-sensory based SMILE approach (sensory, motor, interaction, language and experimental learning) to facilitate functional communication and uses each key element in the assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and sensory processing disorders.
Steven Siegelman, MS, CCC-SLP, has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for over 25 years. Steven has studied the literature of coarticulation and articulatory phonology for many years and recently has developed a comprehensive coarticulation therapy program that improves speech intelligibility for children who are unintelligible at the connected speech level. Steven has presented his methods at the ASHA National Conference, the Alaska State Special Education Conference and at numerous school districts.
