There Appeared To Them Tongues As Of Fire, Which Parted And Came To Rest On

Each One Of Them. Acts 2:3

The Richness Of The Spirit Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from me to me on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arres ng details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems mid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. June 3: St. Charles Lwanga and His Companions (martyred 1886-87)

“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all Uganda, Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led about forty teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a forty-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Chris an faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead. King Mwanga, himself barely twenty, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who, now Chris ans, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive; the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had o en shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his execu oner! In 1964, Paul VI canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions, recalling the heroism of early Chris anity’s African martyrs, which we modern Chris ans of far less faith never expected to see repeated. Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer See The Holy Spirit In the readings on Pentecost Sunday, the Spirit is described as a driving wind and tongues of fire. Knowing that the Holy Spirit is a Person of the Trinity, we seem to be able to picture the Spirit only in terms of what the Spirit does. In our second reading, Paul tries to explain just that. First, Paul says that we cannot know Jesus as Lord without the Spirit. The Spirit is the way Jesus is present today, so anyone who truly believes in Jesus is guided by the Spirit. Second, he acknowledges that the Spirit works in many ways. As examples, Paul men ons there are many different gi s and services in the church. He emphasizes that all these differences come from one and the same God. When we think of the strength of the Church, we usually think of its unity, i.e., one bap sm, one faith, one Lord. But we also draw strength from the diversity of gi s and services that people offer to God. So look at the gi s of those around you, and you may be able to see the Holy Spirit more clearly. Phase 1 Letter From Fr. Mark Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of the Lake,

The State of Louisiana will now let us do Masses with larger congrega ons in Phase 1. Weekday and Sunday Masses will be celebrated in the Cho n Center and not the Church building because of social distancing requirements by the State. Please note the following changes: The Archbishop maintains the indult to dispense the Obliga on for Sunday Mass un l further no ce. The Cho n Center will have just over 200 seats available. We usually have 700+ people at 10:30 Mass, so obviously, we must be crea ve. The new daily Mass schedule is intended to help with this. Once the seats are filled, no one else is allowed in the building due to social distancing regula ons. For those that cannot enter the Cho n Center, a Holy Communion line will be allowed with 6 feet separa on between Communicants. I beg your coopera on with the protocols so that we can all enjoy coming back to Communion as a congrega on. Everyone is going to have to sacrifice a bit for the benefit of all. This is our plan at present: Please, Please, Please consider coming to Mass on a weekday morning or evening instead of Sunday. With the Obliga on DISPENSED, you may consider everyday as Sunday for a endance. Financial Stewardship and RAS Status Why should I give to the Church? Only with the sacrificial offering of all our members, can we ensure that Our Lady of the Lake remains a vibrant, ac ve faith community. With your offering you can ensure that we are able to meet our financial obliga ons to maintain our ministries, programs and facili es, pay a just wage to our parish staff, support the needs of the larger Church and assist our brothers and sisters in need. What is RAS? RAS stands for Registered, Ac ve and Suppor ng of the parish. When registering for the school or for PSR classes, each family is asked to be a Registered, Ac ve and Suppor ng member of the parish. Our Lady of the Lake has set a minimum financial amount of $450 per family, per calendar year to be considered an RAS member. Those who do not meet these requirements are asked to pay an addi onal fee. How can I fulfill my RAS minimum amount for 2020? Make contribu ons weekly, monthly or one me prior to the end of 2020 to total $450. When giving cash, please use envelopes with donor iden fica on for proper accoun ng. Contribu ons can be made online by credit card or direct debit through Online Giving. Go to our website at www.ollparish.info and click on the link. Set up the account and make a “Weekly Offering”. Once you choose this op on, you can further decide to make your payment monthly, weekly or one me. Be aware that credit transac ons take 2-3 days to process.
