CYC Board Highlights

At the April 18 Board of Directors meeting, the following actions were taken:l Elected Amie Crosby to fill a vacancy on the Board of Directors for the rest of the club year.l Spectrum completed their work on the building and docks for the new internet/Wi-Fi/phone/cable system.l March continued the trend of more members using the club and spending more during visits, including a strong March Trivia Night and Mardi Gras. The next board meeting will be held May 16.

Our annual Blessing of the Fleet was once again very well at-tended—so fine to see all the boats underway with excited members aboard! I had the honor of sharing the elevated viewing stand with our Fleet Chaplain, Father Bob Wagen-seil, as he blessed the fleet in review. Thanks to Dr. Pat Snair for her bag-pipes—how awesome to hear Amaz-ing Grace piped in! Thanks as well to Clearwater High School’s JROTC for their presentation of colors on the boardwalk, now over 15 years with us.

Members came forward with ideas and sponsorships for new ways to enjoy our club…take a look:n In February, we held a food and wine tasting using

wines from Andretti Vineyards, owned by CYC member, Mario Andretti—yes, that Mario Andrettin Our first Smooth Sunday Jazz Brunch was a huge

hit, sponsored by CYC member Jim Crist—outstanding jazz duo plus a super Bloody Mary & Mimosa bar!n CYC member Jim Hannigan continues to impress us

with his generosity by hosting the Captain Morgan bar and photo op at many of our parties—regattas, Pirate party, Masters Par-Tee and more!n Another big thanks goes out to Past Commodore

Tish Wold for sponsoring a fundraiser for the Ha-ven—what a great help for our community and a super cause!

Why not introduce a potential member to our summer membership program? What a great way to try before you buy! Contact the Club today for details and we’ll help you get started!

HellO frOM WatersIde!As everyone can see, we’re working hard

to spruce up our docks, boats and water-side areas.

I want to send a very special “thank you” to Jack France, Reinhard Opitz, Dan, our overworked maintenance spe-cialist, and Tom Brusini for helping make the main board-walk to our docks look brand new with a fresh coat of stain. Things are really looking up with all the hard work!

Cable and Wi-Fi improvements are now complete, which will benefit all our slip holders and guests. Special thanks to our leadership team for outstanding work!

If you plan to attend our next Waterside meeting, please bring your list of helpful professionals you have used for any boat related problems so we can share with others who have experienced similar issues. We can all benefit by spreading that info.

Coming into cruising season, be sure to check with our Cruisers Club for their upcoming trips and join the fun. Don and Joan Carter can fill you in, but the monthly meet-ings are a good way to meet other like-minded people. That’s all for now. See you at the club!

tHe ClearWater CHallenge was held March 30th. Jim Hannigan kindly hosted the cocktail party the night before. Then he joined the race com-mittee to perform mark boat duty for the competitors. PC Ed Proefke was PRO for the race. Reinhard Opitz generously offered his boat as Race Committee. And he was supported by Pierre Maneri and Fred Rijke.

We’re also continuing Beer Can racing in concert with the Dunedin Boat Club. The race schedule is as follows:

MaY Is a MOntH of both tradi-tional and fun events at the club. One of our heart-warming traditions is the ARC Fun Day Saturday, May 11. CYC employees and members treat our special ARC guests to a day of swimming, boat-ing, dancing and eating. The staff at ARC tells us that many groups help them, but CYC is the only group to invite ARC into their home.

Not once, but twice in May, we’re offering you a weekend-long approach to fun. Friday, May 3, join us upstairs for dinner and dancing. Saturday, May 4, bet on the Kentucky Derby, run in a horse race and listen to music at our annual Derby Day Party on the Tiki Deck. If you are still ready to party, why not close out

the weekend at the Cinco de Mayo party Sunday on the Tiki Deck when Chef John and his crew serve a great Mexican buffet.

We have something entertain-ing every day of the Memorial Day Weekend as well, with the

Hot Rod Hornets Friday, May 24. The Hornets are the second in the series of Friday-featured bands. Memorial Day fun continues with a Saturday Night movie by the pool. We’ll have music on the Tiki Deck Sunday, followed by our traditional cook-out Monday.

Did you attend the inaugural Smooth Jazz Sunday? If so, you were one of nearly 150 people who enjoyed the great food, music and Mimosa/Bloody Mary bar. We had a sold-out event and it was awesome! Make your reservations early for the May 19 Smooth Jazz Sunday.

Thanks go out to Tish Wold, Khris Thurpin, Deb Matt-son, Christy Crist, Amie Crosby, Olivia Prince and Abbey Heimensen for planning and hosting the Spring Fling Party April 27 to benefit The Haven, a domestic abuse shelter. Thanks also to our members for their very generous dona-tions.

Our new events are rockin’ the club. Todd and Amie Crosby and Jim Hannigan made our first Master’s Watch Par-Tee a great success. Scott Koffman was a crowd pleaser at our initial Friday featured band.

Check out this column every month to find out how to have fun at CYC!

HouSe and GrouNdSsOCKs are gOne, boats are blessed, and summer is just around the corner! Our antiquated phone system has been replaced and is functioning as I write this. We’ve completed the new cable TV on the docks, as well as a totally new Wi-fi/internet system for the docks and drydock area, including the pool. I’m sure some tweaking will be necessary, but the fiber optics internet should handle our members’ and guests’ needs for some time to come.

A new icemaker has been installed close to the Tiki bar to help ease the load on Gage and Kane while serving our thirsty members poolside. A new over-pool umbrella replaces the broken one. The pool heater is keeping the water temp right at a comfortable 86 degrees, and all is ready for summer.

Spring is planting time, and with Cheryl Schulz’s help, we are attempting to get new, Florida friendly landscaping ap-proved, ordered and planted to brighten up the front of our club before the summer heat arrives. More to come on that.

We were finally able to obtain the necessary bids for our “walk-in cooler” replacement. The project will be a large one and will require a club closing. Dates will be determined after talking to all parties involved, but we will keep the Tiki bar open. We are working on ideas for limited food service.

We continue to work in the background, giving our “lady” lipstick and polish (otherwise known as touch up paint and repair) with Tom and his crew completing many of the necessary repairs, as well as the desired items (such as hair dryers) that are needed or requested. John is back from vacation, and we have new monthly menu items for everyone to check out, so stop by and look or watch for Tom’s Constant Contact email.

House and Grounds meets at 6:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month. Our next meeting is May 7. All members are not only welcome but encouraged to attend. Please join us!

It’s your club….don’t be a stranger!

Gulls TracksBy lynne shackelford

gulls president

I HOpe YOu were one of the 60+ ladies who enjoyed the new fashions from Sign of the Dolphin in Seminole at our Ladies Luncheon April 17. Our thanks to Linda Wolbert and her staff for a wonderful show. Also, thanks to Terry Brusini, Carmen Marsh, Sharon Crist, Mary Lou Dean, Mitzie France and Lynne Shackelford who modeled. Our thanks also go to Virginia for really picking up on the theme with table decorations, chop sticks and fortune cookies.

Our Thought for the Day winner was Sue Paris with the win-ning thought: A girlfriend is a sister you choose for yourself.

The Gulls are proud to support our veterans again by donating 12 handmade lap robes and hats to the VA Hospital. We also donated 15 cancer hats to patients at Morton Plant Hospital.

This will be our last luncheon for the season. However, we still have opportunities for people to help.

Saturday, May 11, is ARC FUN DAY AT CYC. We need volunteers to help fold shirts prior to the event and then we need volunteers the day of the event to pass out shirts and name tags, help with food service and general assistance. If you can help, please contact Lynne Shackelford at [email protected] or Helen Correia at [email protected].

Although formal luncheons are over, a group of us still meets every Wednesday in the Gulls Nest between10:30-11:00 a.m. to socialize and then have lunch upstairs. Please come early or just for lunch. We’d love to have you join us!

A Spectacular 107th Blessing of the FleetWHat a GLORIOUS DAY we had for the well attended Blessing of the Fleet. Helping to make the occasion so special was the return of Clearwater High School’s USMC Jr.ROTC cadets and Dr.Pat Snair play-ing, “Amazing Grace” on her bag-pipes. Fr. Bob blessed each boat as it passed including the Coast Guard.

Following that blessing the Coast Guard boat participated in the har-rowing rescue of 13 passengers on a sinking boat the next day. As Fr. Bob has said before, “What do we do with the blessings we receive? We pay the blessings forward.”

Chaplain’s Log

tHIs Year’s Blessing of the Fleet not only featured perfect weather but will be remembered as a day when the blessing received was quickly extended where needed most.

Shortly after joining the CYC Fleet and receiving their blessing, the United States Coast Guard crew was dis-patched to an emergency near Anclote Key and partici-pated in the rescue of 13 persons whose vessel had taken on water and eventually sank. What could have become a tragedy ended with a blessing as all 13 persons were safely rescued from the Gulf of Mexico. When I later learned the details of this rescue, I was reminded once again that the blessings we receive always have the potential to become a blessing for others in return.

May the days to come continue to bring blessings to our CYC family, and through each of us may those good gifts become a special blessing for all those whom we encounter along the way.
