Cleanit® EC is a groundbreaking water treatment

technology based on electrocoagulation. It uses

uniquely engineered electrodes capable of removing

multiple contaminants from water and wastewater.

These contaminants include multiple heavy metals,

organics, fluoride, arsenic, radioactive isotopes and

even pathogens. The functional units of the electrodes

are highly porous iron particles combined with several

proprietary functional components.

Cleanit® EC efficiently removes multiple contaminants such as heavy metals, organics, fluoride, arsenic, radioactive isotopes, pathogens, etc. from water and wastewater, while lowering energy consumption and operating costs.

A green revolution in water purification

Electrocoagulation – the basics

Electrocoagulation is a simple and effective method of

removing various heavy metals, metalloids, organic

substances, ammonia, nitrates, phosphates, etc. from

contaminated water. The process is performed by

applying an electric current across metal electrodes that

are submerged in water. When the electricity passes

through the electrodes, metal ions are released from the

sacrificial anode and combine with hydroxide ions

produced at the cathode. This results in the formation of

polymeric metal hydroxides, which are excellent

coagulants. These coagulants trap and remove

contaminants present in the water. Basic concept of

electrocoagulation is schematically presented in Figure 1.

Unique electrode design

Generally, iron and aluminum are the electrodes of choice as

they form effective coagulants. What makes Cleanit® EC

unique is the design of the electrodes. They are

fabricated using proprietary powder metal technology

and additives, which can be customized to target a

specific or broad range of contaminants in water.

powders, the Cleanit® EC electrodes have very high

surface area to volume ratio. As a result, ionization

efficiency is higher, making the electro-coagulation

process fast and energy-efficient.

An added benefit is that the design of the electrodes is

fully flexible and their composition and shape can be

customized depending on the need of treatment (as

shown in Figure 2).

Chromium removal from wastewater

Hexavalent chromium contaminated wastewater obtained from Brazil

was used for the study. Table 1 briefly summarizes the wastewater

characteristics. Current density of 100 Amp/m2 was applied to the

electrodes. Figure 3 shows the results of the study. After the treatment,

hexavalent chromium was reduced to non-detect and trivalent chromium

was less than 0.01 ppm in the treated water.
