Utility Service Group
Knowledge of a new technology
The benefits
Inspiration/Confidence to use the technology
An award winning innovative sustainable, advanced pipe
cleaning technology to improve water quality and asset
management
Developed by the University of Bristol England
Utility Service Group is Sole rights holder
Ice Pigging harnesses the
characteristics of a semi-
solid material
An ice pig is a semi-solid material that can be pumped like a liquid ….....
but behaves like a solid once the pig is formed in the pipe
Food grade, fine table salt (NaCl)
NSF approved
Harmless to customer supply
Additional chlorine may be added as disinfectant
To maintain the correct consistency a
freezing point depressant is used
• Pipe bends, changes in diameter or butterfly valves
• Excavation to launch
and receive pigs
• Interruptions to
supply
• Disinfection required
post clean
Operational LimitationsPigs
Swabs
Flushing/Air Scour/Jet Washing Operational Limitations
• High Water Usage 50% more water than ice pigging
• Inefficient - ice pigging 1000 x more effective
• Low flow rates -length of hose etc.
• Over aggressive -can damage pipe lining
Efficient rapid and environmentally friendly
Combines operational benefits of flushing with the impact of solid pigging
Ice Slurry injected through existing hydrants
System pressure pushes ice through complex water networks
Suitable for pipes of all size and material
Exceptionally low risk
Produces quantifiable results
Harmless to public

Ice Pigging in Practice
Insertion & Discharge
Discharge to Ground Written State Approval Only
What Comes Out?
1) Sample from
front of pig
2) Sample from
middle of pig as
it carries the
sediment
3) Sample at end
of pig where ice
is clean
