Keeping yourself and other people safe

As we work in many different buildings during our day to day work, it is important that we ensure that as well as ourselves, other people using these buildings are not put in danger by our work. Before starting a job think how it affects others using the building, and take appropriate action to prevent anyone coming to harm:

• Make sure you or your equipment does not create a trip hazard

• Display wet floor signs whilst you mop if other people have access to the area

• Display wet floor signs in areas where your work may create a slip hazard

• Make sure floors are not left slippy after mopping: dry them with flat mop after wet mopping

• Mop up any spillages

• Do not spill water outside or mop outside in freezing conditions

• Do not leave cleaning chemicals or equipment unattended

• Park vehicles with consideration to other people

• Remember some people are more vulnerable: for example children or the elderly

Threatening situations

• If another person at work makes you feel threatened please report this to your supervisor or manager

• If the person or situation is with regard to a building that you are working in or around, pack up your equipment and remove yourself to safety first

possible. Leave it to work, or spray with W1 descaler & Cleaner. • Clean the exterior of the toilet using a red cloth & W1 descaler & cleaner. • Start at the top to prevent dripping onto already clean surfaces. • Next clean the outside lid of the toilet. • Finally wipe the bowl, starting with the sides and front before cleaning the bottom edges

better access for cleaning. • Now clean the inside of the bowl: use a toilet brush to scrub under the toilet rim (check

that grime is removed) then scrub the rest of the bowl and the hole at the bottom of the toilet.

• Flush the toilet with the lid down. • Wipe up any drips or spills

DO NOT USE SPONGES TO CLEAN TOILETS they can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Working Safely with Electrical Equipment

Only use equipment once you have been trained. If you are unsure ask your supervisor. Visually check the condition of all cleaning equipment. Do not use the equipment if damaged or faulty. Label it as faulty & report it to your supervisor for repair.

CHECKS FOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT • The casing of the equipment is not damaged or broken • The plug is in good condition • The cable is fitted securely into the plug with no coloured wires visible • The whole length of the cable is not damaged; the coloured wires should not be visible. • The on/off switch and any safety stops work properly.

SAFE USE OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT • Don’t overload electrical sockets or extensions • Always fully uncoil electrical cables or extension reels before use. If you do not uncoil them the cable becomes

very hot during use and will melt or ignite. • Always ensure that your hands are dry before plugging in, unplugging or using electrical equipment. • Do not splash water on electrical equipment, or use vacuums to suck up water, unless they are wet and dry

vacuums. • When using equipment with electrical cables ensure that the cable does not pose a tripping hazard to either

your self or to other people. • Turn off any equipment and unplug it after use. Never leave any equipment plugged in over night or when you

have finished work • Store electrical cables safely after use to prevent them becoming tangled, twisted or a tripping hazard. Take care

with the back pack vacuums not to coil the cable in too tight a circle as it becomes permanently twisted and poses a fire hazard.

Using Vacuums

Cinderella uses two main different types of vacuums for cleaning:

UPRIGHT VACUUM • Used for cleaning carpeted floor areas apart from stairs. • It is powerful and has brushes to help beat the carpet as you vacuum. • This vacuum has wheels to help move it around

BACK PACK VACUUM • Worn as a back pack and used to vacuum stairs. • Adjust the straps of the back pack so it fits you snugly. • Empty the bag at regular intervals to prevent it becoming heavy • Take care where you place the electrical cable so as not to cause a trip hazard on stairs. • Take care with the back pack vacuums not to coil the cable in too tight a circle as it becomes permanently

twisted and poses a fire hazard. • Take care not to trap the cable (for example in doors) as you may pull it & damage it

The vacuum cleaners that Cinderella supplies are dry vac’s only. Do not use them for sucking up water.

Our vacuums have bags (they are not bag less) which will need emptying when full. Switch off and unplug the vacuum before emptying and replacing the bag. Make sure that you use the right type of vacuum bag as each model uses a different one. Never use the electrical cable or hose to move them; it will cause damage.

Slips, Trips and Falls

• This is the most common cause of major accidents in the UK

• Nearly 10,000 a year result in a broken bone

• About 40% of all reported injuries to members of the public are because of this

COMMON CAUSES

• Leaving mopped floors wet

• Leaving obstacles in the way

• Trailing electrical cables

• Wearing unsuitable footwear

HOW TO AVOID SLIPS, TRIPS & FALLS

• Use the right amount of the right cleaning product

• Wring out your mop well when mopping & use a flat mop to dry floors after wet mopping

• Work from top to bottom when mopping stairs: keep on the dry section

• Wear sensible footwear

• Display a wet floor sign when mopping or when you work might make somebody slip

• Clear up spillages promptly

• Keep your work area tidy, and put equipment where it won’t cause a trip hazard

• Keep electrical cables out of peoples way (close to walls, down stair centres etc.)

• No wet mopping of external entrances in icy weather.

Working at height

• Falls are the most common cause of death at work in the UK

• You don’t have to fall very far : about 75% of serious injury caused by falling from below head height

What Is Working At Height

• Any place (including at or below ground level) where a person could fall a distance and injure themselves or others.

• That includes standing on a foot stool or a chair (please don’t stand on chairs!) Keep Yourself Safe • Avoid work at height where possible: use a feather duster, an extension pole or

reach & wash • THINK before working at height • Use appropriate equipment, check it is safe and ensure you are trained before using

it. • Are the environmental conditions safe: weather, floor surface etc. • Do NOT use ladders or step ladders unless you have been trained. • NEVER stand on an object or structure unless the risk assessment says it is safe to

do so(e.g. wall, desk, chair) • Do you have a medical condition or take medication which makes it unsafe to work

at height? If so STOP & inform your manager. • If you are not sure STOP & ASK

Use of step ladders and footstools

As a contract cleaner you will not be permitted to use standard ladders. However you may from time to time need to use footstools or a step ladder. You must be trained and competent to use this equipment and always check the equipment is safe before using it.

• Stop and think about the job: if it is possible to do it from the ground do so

• Ladders are only used for short duration work (30 minutes or less)

• Only use ladders if you are trained and competent: if you are unsure STOP & ASK

• Always check the condition of your step ladder before using it:

• no cracks, corrosion, no missing rungs

• none of the rungs or stiles are bent or damaged

• there are no sharp edges or dents

• foot pads are all present and in good condition

• The step ladder should be clean, and all feet should be in contact with the ground.

• Is the environment safe to use a ladder? • No adverse weather such as ice, high winds or thunder storms • No vehicles which could knock you off your ladder • No power lines or other powered equipment you or your ladder could come within 6m of • Are people likely to walk under your ladder or open a door or window & knock you off your ladder? • Is your foot wear safe & in good condition?

Step ladders should not be used as a means to access another level: they can

become unstable when stepping on or off them.

Page 17: Cleaning Division Induction€¦ · This product is used for cleaning toilets. • Household rubber gloves are recommended for use with this product. • Avoid contact with eyes and

Always position the step ladders safely • Fully extend and engage the locking device

• Position on a firm flat and stable surface which is not slippy.

• On the ground not on other objects to gain height: never on moving objects • On the feet: the ladder should never be supported by the rungs. • All feet should be on the ground and the step ladder should not rock.

• Never against unlocked doors or in an environment where you may be knocked off (unless preventative action to prevent an accident is in place)

Ground conditions are safe • The floor is level & solid so the ladder will not sink • The floor can take the weight • Is the floor wet or likely to be slippy? • Is a ladder accessory needed (for example a stop mat) or can the ladder be tied?

Always use them safely • Fully extend and engage the locking device

• Face the ladder & use both hands when climbing the ladder and keep three points of contact with the ladder when working from it. Climb the steps not the cross braces at the rear.

• Do not stand on the top two rungs of step ladders: they are your hand holds

• Do not overreach: keep your belt buckle within the styles. If you can not reach come back down and reposition

• Avoid side on working

• Do not carry heavy items up step ladders

• Do not stand on windows sills, door sills or other unsuitable structures not designed to take your weight.

• Never move a ladder or extend it whilst someone is on it

• Never slide down the stiles

• Do not leave step ladders unattended
