There are 3 roles for each group1) Manager: reads out directions to group,

asks teacher questions, and keeps group on task.

2) Recorder: records and organizes data into a data table.

3) Technician: collects and returns lab equipment and is responsible for any damage.

Groups Your group role will be randomly

selected for each lab.

You may not change roles during the lab.

You may not disturb other groups. This includes walking over to or talking to other groups.

Each person in the group is responsible for turning in their own lab write-up.

Observation Your subject for this week’s investigation:

Spend the next two minutes testing the poppers, learning how they work, and deciding what kind of experiment you might want to do with them.

CLE 3231.Inq.2 Design and conduct scientific investigations to explore new phenomena, verify previous results, test how well a theory predicts, and

compare opposing theories.

Postulate1. Decide what qualities you wish to investigate

about the poppers. These should be things you can easily measure.(ex: height, diameter, time, surface, color)- How _________ affects _________.

2. Decide what variables you must control (keep the same) in order to obtain repeatable results.(ex: type of popper, surface, the same popper)

3. Decide on a procedure for investigating your question about the poppers.

Objective example Does covering the hole at the top of

the popper affect how high it jumps?

Hypothesis example I believe that covering the hole on

top of the popper will cause it to not jump as high.

Procedure example

1. Collect 1 popper, tape, and a meter stick.2. Have one person in the group hold the

meter stick vertically on the lab table.3. Another person in the group will turn the

uncovered popper inside out and place on the lab table.

4. The 3rd person in the group will watch how high the popper jumps on the meter stick.

5. Record this data in your data table. Repeat jump 2 more times.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 for a tape covered popper.CLE 3231.Inq.2 Design and conduct scientific investigations to explore new

phenomena, verify previous results, test how well a theory predicts, and compare opposing theories.

Data Table example

Trial number Covered vs. Uncovered

Height of jump (cm)

1 Uncovered 87 cm

2 Uncovered 88 cm

3 Uncovered 92 cm

1 Covered 71 cm

2 Covered 76 cm

3 Covered 72 cm

Conclusions Example

When the hole on the popper was uncovered it jumped higher.

Investigate You must get your procedure approved by your

teacher before you can begin your experiment!!!!

Your lab write-up must include: group member names and roles title objective hypothesis procedure data table conclusion
