While going through some of my old CLCA LA/SGV Chapter

Landscaper magazines, I came across an article I wrote back in 2010. After reading it, it seemed cool to share again. Hope you like it!

Being a member of an association that prides itself on being like a family, let’s take a close look at what one definition of the word really means.

Family: A group of people who are generally not blood relatives, but who share common attitudes, interest, or goals.

With this definition in mind, I think it fair to say that CLCA is a family. It’s a group of people, who are in some instances not blood related, but do share common attitudes about our industry, interest in our environment, and share common goals to provide beauty and value to the lives of many other people in the world. Family is a unit that lends support and strength when things are going a little tough or challenging in our lives.

That said, how many family members have you called to see if they are doing OK or need some help in some small way? Sharing possible business leads, discounts on products or services, or just a plain old phone call to say, “Hi and hang in there my friend!” That small gesture means so much when sometimes you feel like the world is up against you.

Belief: Confidence in the truth, faith, existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof.

The belief in our team, whether it be our employees, our co-workers, our clients, or ourselves, should be one of our most sought after personal goals. With belief, we can move mountains and with our family believing in us, we cannot be stopped unless “we” choose to want to do so.

Strength: The quality or state of being strong; moral power firmness, or courage; something or someone that gives one strength or is a source of power or encouragement.

To remain strong during these times takes all of the different definitions listed above…and even more. But, the most important characteristic we should all remind ourselves of is that we are the something or someone that can be the source of another CLCA member’s power or encouragement. Don’t waste that gift.

You and I have all heard and have given the lip service of, “If there is anything I can do for you, let me know.” Yeah, right. Let’s not just give lip service, but instead…give action service. Some people really need to let their needs be known, and not try to keep a phony smile from hiding the truth that they are indeed hurting and need a little encouragement or help somehow.

This message was geared to myself and those of you that can relate to these revelations. When we talk to ourselves, we need to express positive self-talk, but we should also scold ourselves when it is necessary. This way, we can work at truly achieving balance in our lives.

Thanks to my CLCA family members who have walked the walk and not just talked the talk. See you on the trails and at Convention in San Diego this month! ~Ed

More fresh local food will soon be growing in Houston at the Target Hunger Willie H. & Gladys R. Goffney Community Garden.

As part of Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply’s and Audubon International’s commitment to local sustainable solutions and community outreach, the organizations have partnered with manufacturers, Hunter Industries, Landscape Products, Corona Tools and Houston-area contractor, Warren’s Outdoor Living, to install and upgrade the irrigation systems in the Target Hunger community garden.

Target Hunger serves more than 11,000 food-insecure people each month in Houston and distributes more than five million pounds of food annually. Some of that food is grown in the community garden.

On October 13, 2018, Ewing and partners installed drip irrigation in more than 100 raised planter beds to allow Target Hunger to grow even more fresh food to fill the local food pantries throughout the city. Products used in this project included, a Hunter Industries XC Hybrid Controller, a battery operated irrigation controller because the site doesn’t have power capabilities throughout the garden, inline emitter tubing with check valves as well as drip irrigation, wire, and more.

“Food gardens are so vital to a healthy, sustainable community. What Target Hunger is doing with their

garden will continue to help feed thousands in Houston,” said Warren Gorowitz, Vice President of Sustainability at Ewing. “Community outreach and sustainability are such an integral part of who Ewing is as a company, that working with Target Hunger and our other partners to upgrade the irrigation in this garden was a perfect fit.”

“We’re very happy to partner with Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply to make this wonderful project with Target Hunger a reality,” said Christine Kane, Executive Director of Audubon International. “It allows us to promote the importance of integrating sustainability on the community scale, and to help this wonderful organization carry out its mission in a more environmentally sensitive manner.”

For more information on this project and other Ewing PRIDE Projects, contact Ewing or Audubon International.

Toro’s landscape contractor business has introduced new brand messaging that reflects its commitment to helping customers succeed in the field. The new

platform – From Start to Finish – holds the promise that those who depend on their equipment to get the job done right can always count on Toro, with durability, trust and productivity continuing to serve as pillars of the Toro brand.

Aimed at landscape contractors and acreage owners, the messaging also reinforces that Toro understands a reputation is something that must be earned day-in and day-out. This positioning is borne out by Toro’s long-standing industry status as a leading manufacturer of innovative, quality products, and is evidenced by the recent celebration of Toro’s 100th anniversary milestone in 2014.

“We know that for our customers, reputations are built from the ground up. They want and need to be reliably productive. That’s something we share with them,” explains Chris Vogtman, Marketing Manager at Toro. “This new messaging lets them know Toro and its products will be there for them every step of the way, lawn after lawn.”

Vogtman adds that the new messaging also aligns perfectly with Toro’s key values, which include operating with integrity as a supplier, meeting customer needs through a continuous cycle of innovation and new product development, and contributing to the company’s enduring reputation.

“We live the messaging of From Start to Finish here at Toro every day. It’s embedded in our culture and business practices,” Vogtman continues. “And by emphasizing customer and dealer support during every step of the process, from pre-sale to post-sale service and support, we can continue to reinforce Toro’s core values of trust and reliability.”

The new messaging was based on insights and feedback gained directly from contractor and acreage owners, and was officially unveiled at the October 2018 GIE+EXPO in Louisville, Kentucky.

For many people, the hardest part of getting good at anything is

consistently repeating and practicing a certain task until they are good at it. For others, just getting started is really difficult in and of itself. It’s easy to admire skilled musicians and artists for what they can produce, but what you don’t see is the years of practice, hard work, and mistakes that led to their mastery. Because of that, many people fail to realize their true potential – they are unable to chart out a clear path towards realizing the goal they have in mind. They want results, but have no way of achieving them.

What do you hope to achieve in the future? Do you want to learn how to play an instrument? Do you want to learn how to speak a foreign language? Do you want to educate yourself in a demanding, yet rewarding, field? Now ask yourself why you haven’t done it yet. Most people give themselves the same kinds of excuses, year after year: it’s too difficult. They don’t know how to get started. They

don’t have the natural talent that other people have. They don’t have enough time in their day.

What these excuses all have in common is that they serve as justifications for why they have defeated themselves before they ever even began. If you find yourself falling into this same self-reinforcing trap of mediocrity, sometimes the solution is as simple as a paradigm shift and a plan.

These simple yet powerful steps can serve as a guide that will steer you towards what you know you are capable of achieving.

1) Narrow your focus. Before you dedicate yourself to mastering a skill, you have to know what that skill is! Playing an instrument or learning how to code are great goals, but those are very broad categories that contain quite a bit of variation within them. Learning to play the viola is much different than learning to play the drums. Instead of thinking of everything you want to do, start with a single goal in mind. Choose a specific skill to master, and carry what you’ve learned there into other skills you want to acquire next.

2) Set lots of small goals and a few large ones.In many cases, people make the mistake of setting a few

grandiose goals that, while they sound great on paper, can prove to be much more time-consuming to achieve than they originally thought. This leads to discouragement and a false sense of failure. It’s good to keep sight of the big picture, but remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Before you have a city, you must build a village. The same concept applies to any skill that you want to master. If you want to learn how to write a novel, consider breaking up your targets into individual chapters, or even pages. Motivation carries its own inertia: it’s difficult to get started, but once you see results, it’s hard not to keep going.

3) Take regular steps.Notice that the size of your steps isn’t specified. You don’t need to practice the piano for four hours every single day to get good at it. In fact, excessive practice can work against you – the law of diminishing returns will eventually kick in. What’s more important than lots of practice is consistent practice. Maybe you can only work on your coding project for thirty minutes in a day. That’s okay! What matters is that you are disciplined enough to apply yourself even when you’re tired and don’t want to. Think of it as like going to

the gym – you can’t slack off for two weeks and then work out extra hard to make up for your

down time. You have to be consistent about learning a skill if you want to

master it.

4) Find a support network.Seeing your own success is motivating in and of itself, but it’s even more motivating to have the encouragement and support of the people around you. Bodybuilders

frequently benefit from having like-minded friends who are all set on the

same goal. When things get tough, they provide support and advice that can get

you through a rough patch. Conversely, you will eventually get your chance to mentor

and advise the people around you. If you surround yourself with people who are similarly motivated, you’ll be amazed at how much more you get out of your dedication and practice. You might even learn a few new things along the way.

CLCA provides the perfect support network for you and your business. Attend meetings and get involved to realize the true benefits of this organization, comprised of people who, like yourself, share success as a goal.
