Rag rugs have a timeless quality. While many cultures have traditionally used recycled textiles, Claudia Mills Studio designs rag rugs in a fresh palette of colors and new fabrics, updating the age-old technique to create contemporary rugs for today’s living and working spaces.

Working in a small production setting, Claudia Mills Studio designs and manufactures one-of-a-kind handwoven rugs that are unique in today’s textile market of global mass manufacturing. Claudia offers a retail line of individual designs, and custom, site-specific rugs. While the rugs have a contemporary, vibrant feel, they retain the texture and warmth of traditional rag rugs.

As a designer, Claudia strikes a balance between color, texture and pattern in each floor covering. Rugs are offered in two styles. The LOG CABIN style allows for subtle, impressionistic interplay between warp yarn and fabric. The bolder DOUBLE BLOCK style creates more graphic, geometric designs. Both styles are available in a multitude of colorways, and can also be custom-ordered.

Claudia’s custom lines make designing unique rugs easy. Each custom rug begins as a series of drawings with variations in color and composition. Clients are asked to provide color samples in the form of paint chips or fabric swatches of the colors they would like to see in the rug. Floor plans and site photos are helpful if available, and client input is welcome.

When a final design is reached, scaled drawings, fabric swatches and yarn samples are sent to the client for approval. Delivery is determined on approval of the final design. The studio is proud to offer quick turnarounds from order placement to rug completion.

Claudia Mills Studio offers two lines to suit the many requirements of our customers: RUNNER PROJECT CUSTOM offers custom sizing based on 2’ widths. CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM accommodates all sizes and colors.

RUNNER PROJECT CUSTOM

RUNNER PROJECT designs are based on 2’ widths and multiples of 2’ widths seamed together for larger rugs. We keep a loom in the studio permanently set up for RUNNER PROJECT rugs, which enables us to pass on set-up savings to our clients. Both the LOG CABIN and the DOUBLE BLOCK styles are available in RUNNER PROJECT. Clients can choose from our stock designs or use the 2’ width to plan a custom order. While we choose the warp colors in RUNNER PROJECT rugs, the client can choose from over 60 colors in 100% cotton as well as assorted leathers for the weft.

CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM

CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM rugs are woven on 5’ looms, accommodating all sizes and colors. Rugs wider than 5’ are designed and woven in sections and seamed together. Our looms are capable of weaving lengths up to 50’. Cotton rugs up to 12’ in length can be machine-washed. Both the LOG CABIN and the DOUBLE BLOCK styles are available in CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM. A separate warp is set up for each CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM rug; these can be adapted from rugs already in our retail line or unique designs. Weft colors include over 60 stock colors and assorted leathers. Because each CLAUDIA MILLS CUSTOM project requires its own loom set-up, the pricing structure differs from rugs in the RUNNER PROJECT.

PRICING AND DELIVERY

Rugs are priced by the square foot. All custom projects are charged a non-re-fundable design fee of $150, which is applied to the final cost of the rug. The fee covers the cost of a site visit when possible, and color renderings of designs to scale with fabric and yarn samples. Woven samples/strike-off ’s are available for an additional charge. An assembly fee of $5/linear ft is applied to pieced rugs. On approval of the final design, a 50% deposit is required, with the balance due on delivery of the rug. The client will pay shipping and insurance costs.
