Management Philosophy

Classroom Management involves more than keeping a student behavior
under control. The physical set up of the classroom, how you transition from
lesson to lesson and teaching self discipline are also an important part of

classroom management. This and many other things are what involve classroom
management. I believe an important part of classroom management is the role of
a teacher as a guide to their students. Helping the students think for themselves
and encourage them to go above and beyond what is expected of them is an
important part of my classroom management philosophy. When a student feels
the support of their teacher they will be more focused in the classroom and
overall classroom management behavior wise will be easier. Two theorists who
have similar ideas to mine are Rudolph Dreikurs and Richard Curwin and Allen
Mendler. I agree with a lot of their ideas and will probably implement them in my
own management philosophy.
Rudolph Dreikurs believed that when a teacher acts in a democratic
fashion they demonstrate effective instruction and provide a collaborative
learning community where teacher and student work toward common goals
(Manning & Butcher pg. 63). To me a having a democratic classroom also means
that the students feel that they have a say in what they do and they will not be
afraid of voicing their opinions to me. Another idea I liked from Dreikurs is that of
a logical consequences. Prior to establishing a logical consequence Dreikurs
believed teachers must establish simple, specific classroom rules (Manning &
Butcher pg. 69). To me that is common knowledge all students should know what
is expected of them in a classroom and they should be taught to them at the
beginning of the year that to me is something crucial. Once a student knows how
they need to behave they should be introduced to the consequences if the rules
are broken. The consequence should be logical lets say the student is being

disruptive in class a logical consequence could be put him apart from the class
and make him write a small note explaining why they where behaving that way.
After 10 minutes have a small talk with they student and let him become part of
the class again. I also like Dreikurs idea of encouraging a student instead of
praising them. If a student is working hard on a paper a simple acknowledgement
from the teacher will go a long way. It can be as simple as your hard work is
paying off I know you can get that A on your paper soon, that will encourage the
student to work harder. This encouragement will also help a student self esteem
grow which is something I wanted all my students to have a strong self esteem.
Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler are theorist who I also share ideas with.
They believed in Discipline with dignity to me this means that even though you
can be a strict teacher when disciplining the student you need to be fair and take
every situation in consideration because not all students are the same. Curwin
and Mendler wrote that teachers must convey a sense of warmth and make their
classroom welcoming places with basic human touches that encourage
acceptable behavior and set the tone for responsible learning (Manning &
Butcher pg. 111). Students should always feel welcomed and comfortable in the
classroom and I want my students to know they can always count on me. As well
as Dreikurs Curwin and Mendler also believed in a democratic classroom which
is something I really want to have in my classroom.
I want my future classroom to be one where my students feel welcomed,
and feel like they are an important part of the class, my class will be democratic
everyone will have a say. My students will think for themselves and will have a

strong sense of self esteem. My role as their teacher will be to guide them to be
that person they want to someday be. It will be my number one job to always
encourage them to shoot for the stars and higher. I will accomplish this by putting
in motion a good classroom management plan and will some ideas of theorist like
Dreikurs, Curwin and Mendler.
