First Day at a New School

It was the first day at a new school for Alice. She had only been at

one school before and she missed all of the friends that she left there.

Alice had to move because her father got a new job. The city was much

larger and much louder than where they had lived before. Alice found it

difficult to sleep at night with the noise of cars and fire trucks.

Her mother had made her special banana pancakes for the big day.

This was Alice’s favorite breakfast but she just stared at the plate. "What

are you worried about?” her mother asked.

"They will not like me." said Alice.

Her mother helped her put on her coat and gave her a hug. Alice's

school was a twenty minute walk from her house. Her mother held her

hand all the way to the front door of the school. It was much bigger than the one that Alice went to before. They both knew it was time to go in.

"Just be yourself honey, and everything will be fine," her mother

said. Alice opened the door and went into her new school.

Alice's new teacher, Mrs. Winters, was waiting for her in the hall.

Mrs. Winters brought Alice into the classroom and showed her which

cubby she could use to put her things. Next, Mrs. Winters showed Alice her

new seat by the windows. Alice felt all the children staring at her. She

stared at her fingers until Mrs. Winter began the lesson for the day. At break time, Alice stayed at her desk while the other students played.

A red headed girl came up to Alice. "I'm Julie. Do you want to play

blocks with me?" she asked. This took Alice by surprise but after only 20

minutes, they seemed like old friends. Julie and Alice quickly became

inseparable and were always together. With Julie as a friend, Alice was never scared of school again. ©2013 Alyssha Swanson: Teaching and Tapas

It was the first day at a new school for Alice. She missed her

"Just be yourself," her mother said. Alice opened the door and went to her new school.

Mrs. Winters was waiting for Alice in the hall. Mrs. Winters

showed Alice into the classroom. Alice felt all the children staring at

her. She looked down at her hands all morning. At break time, Alice

sat down while the other kids played.

A girl came up to Alice. "I'm Julie. Do you want to play blocks

At the end of the year, Alice’s teacher, Mrs. Winters, announced that the 1st grade would be putting on a performance called Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock. All acting parts were open to the first grade class and auditions for the main characters, Anansi and Deer, would be held in two weeks.

“I’m going to try for Deer,” Alice told her best friend Julie.

“I was going to try for Deer too,” said Julie. “But I won’t if you want to. Let’s practice together and take turns being Deer. Then Mrs. Winters can pick who is best.”

For the next two weeks, Alice and Julie practiced after school. Alice would be Deer for an hour and Julie would be Anansi. Then they switched. Their parents would watch their practicing and clap every time. Every night, Alice dreamed of playing Deer on the stage in front of all the parents and children. She even knew how she was going to paint her face for the play.

The day of the auditions arrived. At lunch, Alice and Julie walked with the other children to the auditorium. One by one, the children got up on the stage and read the script. Alice thought that many of them looked too scared to be on the stage. The kids who tried for Deer especially did not look comfortable.

When it was Julie’s turn, Alice loudly cheered for her friend. Julie looked just as scared as the other kids. After a few minutes she began to feel more comfortable and finished her audition well. When it was Alice’s turn, Julie cheered her too. Alice was not scared of the stage. She pretended that she was in her living room practicing with Julie. She was able to say all the lines clearly.

When it was over, Mrs. Winters said, “I have made my decisions on who

will play Deer and Anansi. But before I announce them, I want to congratulate everyone for trying out. Julie will take the part of Deer and Alice will take the part of Anansi,” said Mrs. Winters.

“Oh, but you wanted that part,” said Julie to Alice.

“It’s okay, I think I’ll have more fun playing Anansi with you as Deer,” said Alice. The first grade performance of Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock was

the best play the school had ever seen.

Alice got to school and sat next to her best friend, Julie. Mrs.

Winters stood at the front of the class. She told them about a school

play that was coming up. There was only one main part. It was for

Cinderella. Mrs. Winter’s told them they would have to try out for that

part.

Alice wanted to be Cinderella. But she was scared. She had never

been in a play. Was she good enough to get the part?

“I want to try out for Cinderella but I don’t think I am good

enough,” Alice told Julie.

“Just try your best. You will be great!” Julie said with a smile.

For the next two weeks, Julie helped Alice practice after school.

Every night, Alice dreamed of shining on the stage.

It was the day of the try-outs. When it was Alice’s turn, Julie

cheered for her friend. Alice was not scared to go on stage. She acted

like she was in her living room with Julie. When it was over, Mrs. Winters

said, “Julie, you will be the perfect Cinderella!”

A huge smile spread across Alice’s face. She looked at Julie who

was also smiling. Her heart felt full. She could not have done this

without her best friend!
