Overall statistical analysis
Generally, there have been less year-to-year school related violent deaths as time
has progressed. Since the 1997-1998 school year, there was a gradual decreasein this year-to-year death count. However, deaths spiked in 2003-2004 for anunexplained reason, trending downward once again until 2005-2006. The deathcount in 2006-2007 is misleading, as 33 died in the Virginia Tech Massacre in Aprilof that year.

troubling as to cause others to be worried aboutwhat he may be doing. In past cases, bystanders
have noticed such alarming behavior in the form of
a subdued or antisocial personality, distressing
things the individual has said or written, an unnatu-
ral interest in violence, and the composition of a
hit list, among other things.
Alarming BehaviorCho Seung-hui, the VirginiaTech shooter, had composedvarious disturbing and violentwritings; one of these writingseven dealt with an individualplanning a school massacre.Chos quiet, asocial, and sub-
dued nature, as well as his self-given title of ? were a causefor concern.
