Thanks to Shawn Westerlund for this photo taken along railway between Spuzzum and North Bend.

Blueweed is a noxious and invasive weed that is common in central and south central areas of B.C. It is making an appearance in our immediate area, threatening to invade pastures and rangeland. As it spreads, it replaces the

forage plants. Infestations of blueweed are associated with some economic losses.

The flowers are bright blue; 5-lobed; found on upper side of short stems. The stems are hairy and can be painful to the touch. At flowering, the plants are 30-80 cm tall. The leaves are covered in short hairs, becoming smaller at they approach the top of the plant. The seeds (called nutlets) appear in groups of 4 along the stems; each nutlet is

approximately 3 mm long, grayish-brown, rough and wrinkled.

Blueweed can be seen along roadsides, drainage ditches, pastures, rangelends and other undisturbed areas. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial species that reproduces by seed. Each plant produces as many as 2800 seeds per plant. These seeds are generally dropped in the immediate vicinity of the parent plant but can be further

distributed by animals and birds, as the rough seeds will stick to clothing, hair and feathers.

MECHANICAL CONTROL: Hand-pulling may be effective control for small infestations. Cutting larger infesta-tions will help to decrease seed production. There are currently no biocontrol agents available for blueweed. CHEMICAL CONTROL: 2,4-D. Glysophate (“Roundup”), Picloram, and Clopyralid. **Application of herbicides must be carried out

following a confirmed Pest Management Plan and under the supervision of a certified pesticide applicator. www.env.gov.bc.ca

Early detection is critical to stopping the spread of invasive species. You can help detect and locate new infestations of invasive species, particularly those capable of significant environmental or economic harm. Information Links: http://bcinvasives.ca. To report the sighting of a plant or animal that seems out of place, you can call ISCBC (Invasive Species Council of B.C. at 1-888-933-3722. You can also take a photo and send an email to [email protected]

Report-A-Weed - The Province's Report-a-Weed-wizard takes you through 3 easy steps to report a suspected new sighting of an invasive plant species in BC. You can also report a weed using the smartphone app for iPhone or Android. Report an Invasive Animal Species to the BC Inter-Ministry Invasive Species Working Group (IMISWG). All submissions will be directed to the provincial specialist for the respective species. You can also join the Spotters’ Network to learn about how to spot and report

invasives; and/or enter information and provide images of invasive plants to Eflora.

P a g e 3 Page 14 Constable’s Corner From Our Director Electoral Area A: Terry Raymond

In the last month, I have attended six meetings with Fraser Valley Regional District and with the RCMP. I also met with MLA

Throness to discuss issues surrounding Boston Bar, North Bend and Canyon Alpine.

On February 17th, I was given the opportunity to emcee the second of three "Speakers Sessions", (Past, Present and a Ques-tion of our Future PART 2), which is being hosted by the Hope & District Chamber of Commerce at Hope's Conference Center. The session was attended by about 100 people, some who came from Boston Bar. Guest speakers were Mayor Wilfried Victor ,

John Les and Dale Wheeldon. The topics of discussion basically centered around the importance of attracting industry to the area.

The third Speakers Session will be held March 30 and the speakers will be MP Mark Strahl, MLA Laurie Throness and Richard Truscott ( Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business for BC and Alberta)

(You can follow these events at https://www.facebook.com/HopeChamberofCommerce)

I have also been working with the Teal Jones Group, Fraser Valley Regional District and a company that is considering setting up a business on the mill property. The FVRD and the company are seeking information from the Ministry of Environment to see if there are any regulatory restrictions on the property and it's use. If the company is successful in securing the land, they say it

could mean 15 to 20 new jobs.

I met with the Province at the end of February, as we continue to promote the preservation and restoration of the Alexandra bridge and park enhancement. There is no further update on the placer mine application as it is still working it's way through the different

provincial ministries.

We now have some funds available to spruce up the Welcome to Boston Bar signs. The "Update" will also be receiving a $2000.00 grant through the FVRD to help cover costs of producing the newsletters. If there is anyone in town that would like to take on refurbishing the 'Welcome' signs, please contact myself at 604-867-8891 or Rob Dufresne at 604-867-9331.

Spring’s almost here and we are looking for volunteers at our Community Center’s Thrift Shoppe. Our volunteers are “older” ladies and they really need MORE help. With-out more people willing to volunteer their time, we may be forced to close the NBCC doors one day a week.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that!

Because…. The community center not only houses our Thrift Shoppe but there is also a Museum, a Wellness Centre, a bake shop, a gift shop and a room where anyone can play games, put puzzles together, use the computers (free

internet provided) or just socialize.

Please come in and see Lil Forman at the Thrift Shoppe!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

A GENERAL MEETING OF THE MAY DAY COMMITTEE WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY APRIL 1ST, 2016 AT 4PM AT CANYON LANES. As our chairperson has resigned and the co-chair is also resigning, there will be ELECTIONS at the end of the meeting. IF YOU ENJOY OUR MAY DAYS, PLEASE ATTEND AND

VOLUNTEER SOME TIME TO HELP ORGANIZE THIS YEAR’S EVENT.

In March some Thrift Shoppe Specials will be Bag of Clothes $5.00, Bag of Books $2.00. Come each week and see what specials we have. If you have any used furniture in good shape please donate it to the Thrift Shoppe. Your donations benefit our community mem-

bers! Which in turn helps keep the Thrift Shoppe open.

IT ’S THAT TIME AGAIN… Did you know that March is a Fraud Prevention Month? If not, it is a good reminder for everyone. Have you received an offer that sounds too good to be true? From speaking with a few of you and from having experienced it myself recently both personally and at work, scammers are out there looking for their next victim. Because of it all, the goal this month is to help you not become a victim of fraud.

Have you been asked to help someone from a different country and in return, you shall be rewarded well!? Have you been told that your credit card purchase was not authorized and now you have to validate your details?

There are different ways of obtaining your personal information but what you need to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Banks and credit cards rarely require your information to be updated and if they do, they are not in a hurry to get that information. Also remember to never open anything on your computer e-mail that you do not recognize. In case you get the “your account will be closed if you don’t update your infor-mation now” or any similar threats, remember, the banks and credit cards want you as a customer and they will wait! Now that we have established that requests such as the ones above are not urgent, talk to someone. If you are un-sure about a phone call or an e-mail you have recently received, speak with your family and friends about it. In case you are still unsure or don’t have anyone to speak with, come speak with one of us. We will be happy to assist you! Do you have questions or concerns that you would like us to address or topics you would like us to write about in the next edition of the “Constable’s Corner?” Come chat with us or Karen Tillotson, the editor of the Boston Bar Update Newsletter and tell us what you want to see in the upcoming editions of the “Constable’s Corner.“

From time to time, some of our Boston Bar/North Bend seniors require a ride to an appointment at Anderson

Creek Health Clinic on Wednesdays, or to the Community Lunch at Family Place (also on Wednesdays). Occa-

sionally, they might need prescriptions picked up from Canyon Lanes or Canyon Tirecraft and then delivered.

While some of our seniors have family and neighbours who are in a position to help them out, the unfortu-

nate truth is that many of our seniors simply do not.

It would be great to know if there are any folks in our midst who would be willing to be put on a driver list.

I would attempt to give you as much advance notice as possible.

This would be on a volunteer basis because some of our seniors have very limited funds. However, this is

something you could discuss with your ‘rider’. If as a driver, you are not in a position to offer FREE transporta-

tion and your passenger is willing to remunerate you for your gas, please note that a fair going rate would be

25 to 35 cents per kilometer.

Please give this some thought and if you can help out, please call Karen 604-869-1831. THANKS! Canyon Lanes will be CLOSED Good Friday and Easter Monday.

In attendance were Traditional Dancers and Drummers who travelled from Lytton: Ernie Michell and his family and Redhawk, Charlie and families). There were 4 dancers includ-ing one little girl. Approximately 60 people attended the event, enjoyed a lunch service and were entertained by the stirring

drumming and singing. Everyone in attendance at the event were taught about the traditional aspects of not only the dances, but also of the cos-tumes worn. Each piece worn by the participants is beautifully handmade and is often honoured by a ceremony or action to bestow reverence to the piece that is worn.
