Classical Culture in Rome June 27 - July 11, 2010 Empire without End: Augustan Rome and the Founding of the Principate – a three-unit course for undergraduate (HRS 196A) or graduate (HRS 296A) credit; the course can also be audited • Two-week stay in double-occupancy apartments in Rome’s ancient city center • Offered in conjunction with the American Institute for Roman Culture, specializing in providing optimal academic experiences in Rome • Visits to sites, monuments, and museums relevant to Augustan culture and the early empire, including the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill, the Ara Pacis, the Colosseum, and the Vatican museums • Excursions to Ostia Antica, the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, Lavinium, and Lake Nemi in the Alban Hills • Options (at extra cost) include a three-day excursion to Pompeii and Naples, and an additional three-unit independent study course (HRS 199 or 299) designed in consultation with faculty Faculty: Jeffrey Brodd is a professor of humanities and religious studies at Sacramento State. Monica Roberts is a graduate of Sacramento State’s Liberal Arts Master’s Program. Both have extensive experience traveling in Italy. Academic Preparation: While there are no formal prerequisites, participants are expected to have acquired familiarity with Vergil’s Aeneid, and general background knowledge of Roman cultural history during the transition from the republican to the early imperial period (70 BCE to 70 CE). This can be achieved through successful completion of HIST 112, HRS 114, HRS 117, HRS/LIBA 224, or LIBA 200A, or through study of works prescribed by faculty. Tentative Cost: $4,000 (not including airfare) Deadlines: $1,000 deposit and application due March 23; remaining $3,000 due April 8 Audience: Students and others with suitable levels of interest and familiarity to appreciate and participate in a course with specific focus on Augustan and early imperial Roman culture.
