Liszt’s earlier versions are sometimes actually more complex than the later published version. After all, Liszt wanted to sell his published music and writing music nobody but him could play was not economically feasible, so he sometimes revised his works for publication making them easier to play and less complicated. Between Howard [see above CL-AS-P2-13] and Dubé we are privileged to be able to compare and evaluate this progression between early and late versions. Not having scores of both versions, I tried following this early version on the disk with the score of the later version and could see no obvious differences in the overall organization of the work except in the final cadential chord which is more elaborated in this earlier version. Other differences may likely lie in detailed textures or fleeting harmonies.” (Shoemaker n.d.) Another critic wrote about this performance of the piece – “Au bord d’une source emerges logically and effectively out of the decrescendo that closed the preceding Ballade. Surprisingly, though, this brief piece (5’08) is given a stilted rendition. On the stiff side, the waters refuse to flow as in Nature (appoggiaturas similarly sound forced).” (Clarke n.d.) One French critic wrote – “Pastorale … est comme un interlude avant la seconde étude aquatique, Au bord d’une source, qui, dans la version originale, venait juste après Au lac de Wallenstadt, les deux pièces étant en la bémol majeur. La mouture révisée d’Au bord d’une source a beaucoup gagné en subtilité et en élégance pianistique: pour partager la ligne mélodique, la main gauche croise la main droite, alors libre de nous brosser le portrait éclatant et complexe du mouvement de l’eau.“ (Parry 2005) [Pastorale… is like an interlude before the second aquatic study, Au bord d’une source, which, in the original version, came just after Au lac de Wallenstadt, both pieces being in A flat major. The revised version of Au bord d'une source has gained a lot of subtlety and piano elegance: to share the melodic line, the left hand crosses the right hand, so free to paint the bright and complex portrait of the movement of the water.]
