The Learning Leader as Culture Manager
Edgar H. Schein
Overview• Provide assignment context
• Take a slight detour
• Introduce Edgar Schein’s work
• Discuss key takeaways
But first, a slight detour• I read the article
• I understood it
• I needed to know more…
I missed the first class
• Here’s what I knew– I have two text books– I have some case studies– I have to present a classical reading(?)
• Here’s what I didn’t know– Everything else
• So I went on a journey– And now I’m taking you
Classic Readings
• Intended to be– Stand alone collection of most important work in OB– Supplement to several OB texts (i.e. ours)– Sidekick buddy to a specific text (not ours)
• Criteria– Should the serious OB student know the work?– Had to make a basic statement that has been consistently echoed or attacked over years
– Had to be readable
But wait, what’s OB?

Organizational Culture and Leadership
The Learning Leader as Culture Manager
• Leadership can occur anywhere in the organization
• It’s the attitude and motivation to examine and manageculture
Leadership in…• Culture Creation
• Organizational Midlife
• Mature and Potentially Declining Organizations
Culture Creation• Key is to be self‐aware
• Own assumptions impact organization
• Difference between what they intend to impart and how their own inner conflicts manifest
Organizational Midlife• Detect how the culture influences strategy, structure and
how groups relate to one another
• Diagnose cultural influences AND their impact on the organization’s ability to change and learn
• Ultimate paradox, accepting that they might not have the vision needed and must replace themselves
Mature and Potentially Declining Organizations
• Entrenched in culture
• Become blind to and paralyzed by it
• Requires extreme self insight, exposure to many subcultures and license to challenge assumptions
Leadership and Culture in Strategy Formulation
• Notice changes in the environment and then figure out what needs to be done to remain adaptive
• Perpetual seeking to understand external and internal influences and make positive adjustments
Selection and Development of Leaders
Qualities AbilitiesPerception and Insight Change Cultural Assumptions
Motivation Create Involvement & Participation
Emotional Strength Learn a New Culture
Can you help??• Motivation – To change the culture of their organization,
leaders must be willing to unfreeze it, change it, then refreeze it.
When an organization’s culture is not all right…
• “If the boundaries of an organization become looser, a further motivational issue arises in that it is less and less clear where a leader’s ultimate loyalty should lie – with the organization, with industry, with country, or with some broader professional community whose ultimate responsibility is to the globe and to all of humanity.”
Summary
• Leaders need – Self‐reflection and insight– An understanding of how their words, actions and behavior impact their org.
– Ability to detect and identify cultural elements– Skill to apply appropriate interventions at various stages
– Willingness to step into the unknown and continue to learn
