Half bottle of Château Raymond-Lafon, Sauternes 2010This near-perfect Sauternes continues to impress, both in comparative tastings of the vintage, and in the more exacting conditions of our annual Wine Champions blind-tasting competition. If it lacks the kudos of premier cru, having arrived on the scene a whisker too late for the 1855 Classification, it is every inch the first growth on the palate. The blend is four-fifths semillon with sauvignon blanc. Spicy, aromatic, luscious and fine with great length of flavour. Now to 2035. 13.5% Low stock. ref CT-BW4062 £13.50 half bottle £162 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Crusted Port, Bottled 2007Bottled and shipped exclusively for The Society by Fonseca Guimaraens. Crusted port is a blend of two or three different harvests, aged in wood for two years, then bottled without fining or filtration. It has to spend three years maturing in bottle before being shipped for sale. This example is youthful, sweet and fleshy. An ideal accompaniment for Stilton, it requires decanting to remove the crust or sediment. Now to 2022. 20% ref CT-PN191 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Tawny Port, 10 years oldTawny port is a delicate red brown in colour – the tawny of the name – and has lovely sweet nutty flavours on the palate that resonate with the creamy blueness of Stilton. It is matured in cask, here an average of 10 years, before bottling in 2011. Produced for us by David Guimaraens chief winemaker of the Fladgate group, owners of the fine Fonseca and Taylor’s houses among others. Serve chilled with dried fruits and nuts as an aperitif, after a meal to lift the palate, or savour over a long evening. 20% ref CT-PN111 £17 bottle £204 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Vintage Port 1983Rich, sweet and vigorous with toasted ripe fruit, this is an ideal celebratory bottle. It comes from the Symington Family Estates, one of the foremost port shippers producing top wines such as Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s and Cockburn’s. This 30-year-old example is perfectly poised to drink; the top 1983 ports have turned out remarkably well and this is one of them. Now to 2018. 20% ref CT-PT1731 £49 bottle £588 dozen

SAUTERNES & PORT

Pouilly-Fumé ‘Les Princes Ermites’ 2013Sauvignon blanc specialist Denis Dubourdieu is now consulting here, taking this fine Loire property to even higher standards of excellence. Produced by the Comte and Comtesse d’Estutt d’Assay at the Château de Tracy, this is a refined example of Loire sauvignon and a great buy. Fragrant with lemon pith and mineral notes perfectly balanced. Now to 2017. 13% ref CT-LO11261 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Do Ferreiro Albariño, Rías Baixas 2014Possibly Spain’s finest albariño, this is made in tiny quantities with great attention to detail by Gerardo Méndez. Using fruit from old vines, Gerardo allows a little skin maceration which produces a richer, fuller style, which develops considerable complexity six to 18 months after bottling. This is fragrant and aromatic with a fresh palate of great length of flavour. Lovely with grilled langoustines. Now to 2018. 12.5% ref CT-SP10571 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

Sancerre ‘La Reine Blanche’, Domaine Vacheron 2014The Society has been shipping Sancerre from the Vacheron family since the 1962 vintage, because of their consistent excellence. The family always invested their earnings back in the vineyards, particularly those with flinty (silex) soil that gives their wines distinction, and in the cellars under the town. Fine, mineral Sancerre with racy acidity and great length on the palate. Now to 2019. 12.5% ref CT-LO11551 £15.50 bottle £186 dozen

Jules Camuset Brut NV We think this is the perfect party fizz: thoroughly enjoyable, fruity, light, dry and refreshing. This is exclusive to The Wine Society and is made from high-quality fruit (55% pinot meunier, 30% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay). 12% ref CT-CH771 £19 bottle £95 6 for 5 price £15.83 equivalent bottle price

Pierre Gimonnet Premier Cru Brut NV The Gimonnet style is one of freshness, purity and intensity, and their fragrant, invigorating and racy non-vintage is a special wine. Instead of the usual stainless-steel tanks, the reserve wines are aged in bottle and then several vintages are blended with a young wine. The result is something that has great complexity and mellowness yet also the freshness and vitality of young Champagne. A chilled glass served with a plate of oysters is simply divine. 12.5% ref CT-CH3151 £24 bottle £144 six-bottle case

Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV Roederer is one of the great Champagne houses, arguably the most reliable and consistent of them all. Established in 1776, the founding family still run the company and, unusually in Champagne, make the wines from grapes grown in their own prime vineyards. This cuvée is made from equal parts pinot noir and chardonnay with 20% pinot meunier and has great depth of flavour. 12% ref CT-CH26431 £38 bottle£169 special six-bottle offer price (6 for 5 plus a further £21 saving)£28.17 equivalent bottle priceSAVE £59 PER SIX

CHAMPAGNE

WINES THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME At Christmas we all like to indulge a little in wines that we know and love. Champagne, white Burgundy and mature claret followed by a chilled bottle of Sauternes is not a new recipe for a great evening, but it is a very good one and one that has given a great deal of pleasure to many. This offer brings those ingredients to you in time for Christmas, together with other fail-safe classics, such as Rioja, Rhône and port, which continue to stand the test of time.

It is, as we are consistently reminded, the season to be jolly, and so we hope you are able to fill your wine racks with a few classic wines picked from our cellar to enjoy over the coming weeks with friends and family. The mixed cases have been carefully selected to cover every contingency, and would make a thoughtful gift for your host if you’re celebrating away from home this year.

Château Larrivaux, Haut-Médoc 2010Larrivaux, in the commune of Cissac on Bordeaux’s left bank, is a fine estate with vines neighbouring Lafon-Rochet in Saint-Estèphe. This is a generously fruity claret from an outstanding vintage, forward in style yet with inherent class. Now to 2019. 14% ref CT-CM14861 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

Domaines Lupier El Terroir Garnacha, Navarra 2010Young couple Enrique Basarte and Elisa Úcar are behind this new wine from very old vines, dating back to 1903. The vines were painstakingly selected using SIGPAC (a Spanish vineyard-mapping programme) in what can be considered a work of viticultural archaeology, and they have produced a beautifully structured and layered Spanish garnacha with serious, complex flavours. Now to 2019. 14% ref CT-SP11131 £16 bottle £192 dozen

Pauillac 2008 Our relationship with the world-famous property that makes this outstanding claret allows Wine Society members access to it at an extremely fair price, on the condition that we do not reveal the source. We have held back stock of some of this wine for release now as it enters its drinking window. There is a lovely density of fruit and sweet spice, plenty of muscle and a long cassis and leather-driven finish. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref CT-CM15751 £16.50 bottle £198 dozen

Château Vieux Lartigue, Saint-Emilion 2009A great claret for Christmas present (although there is no rush), this classic right bank claret has a complex plum, leather and spice perfume. The tannins are balanced by sweet red and blackberry fruit with plenty of spice on the fresh finish. Very smart wine from a generous vintage. Now to 2019. 13.5% ref CT-CS8761 £16.50 bottle £198 dozen

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Lazaret 2012 The Quiot family are among the biggest vineyard owners in Châteauneuf with vines scattered around the appellation and theirs is always one of the more reasonably priced. The nose has cherry, blackberry and violets and the soft tannins and acidity on the palate give this wine a great freshness, supporting generous red-berry fruit and spice on the finish. Now to 2019. 14.5% ref CT-RH40611 £16.50 bottle £198 dozen

Saint-Joseph Silice, Domaine Coursodon 2012Made from young syrah vines, this is a ripe, fine northern Rhône that exudes charm and class. Smoked meat, violets and ripe plums on the nose, with intense damson and cherry flavours, a hint of spice on the palate and a long finish with a note of leather. Now to 2019. 13.5% The 2013 follows. ref CT-RH34941 £16.50 bottle £198 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011Made by Françoise and Béatrice Mayard, in conjunction with Society buyer Marcel Orford-Williams, this southern Rhône has a grenache base providing a depth of strawberry flavour, but with fragrant syrah and cinsault too. Aged in large neutral oak foudres for a year before release, this wine is gorgeous in its youth, but is now developing a little intriguing spice on the long finish. Now to 2020. 14.5% ref CT-RH34211 £17.50 bottle £210 dozen

Madame de Château de Pitray, Côtes de Castillon 2008An elegant right bank claret with a complex cassis, leather and herbal nose. Merlot dominates but 30% cabernet franc adds to the complexity. Intergrated tannins are well balanced by the intensity of fruit on this elegant, fresh, classically structured red. Now to 2018. 13.5% ref CT-CB3871 £18 bottle £216 dozen

Gigondas, Domaine du Cayron 2011Three sisters with very traditional views on winemaking are in charge of this small southern Rhône estate. The Faraud family own plots all over Gigondas, which brings complexity to the final blend. Long ageing in large foudres gives this a lovely glowing patina. Now to 2023. 14% ref CT-RH33141A £18 bottle £216 dozen

CVNE Imperial Reserva, Rioja 2009One of the great names, CVNE Imperial is one of the classiest Riojas. This polished, cedary and compact reserva has lovely harmony and length. It is a true classic in Rioja and was first produced in the 1920s. Its name comes after a special bottling for the English market, in a measure called Pinta Imperial (approximately half a litre). Decant before serving to allow the nose to develop. Now to 2023. 14% ref CT-SP10501 £20 bottle £240 dozen

Hortevie, Saint-Julien 2009Many members already know the quality of this Bordeaux vineyard which lies across the road from Ducru-Beaucaillou, who now own it and have added extra polish and finesse. Lovely cedary bouquet and full complex palate. The reason there is no ‘Château’ in the name is simply because there is no château on the estate. Now to 2025. 13.5% ref CT-CM13751 £22 bottle £264 dozen

Barolo La Foia Arborina, Nadia Curto 2011Rich, full and attractively balanced Barolo from a young grower, the niece of Elio Altare, who cultivates without the use of chemicals and bottles her wine unfiltered. A wine of charm as well as full flavour. Now to 2021. 14.5% ref CT-IT20051 £22 bottle £264 dozen

Cornas Champelrose, Domaine Courbis 2006Perfect now, this complex northern Rhône has opened up with smoke and leather aromas mingling with the black fruits at its core. Rich in texture and concentrated in flavour, but elegant and precise with a long, perfumed finish. Now to 2017. 13% ref CT-RH19871 £23 bottle £276 dozen

Domaine de Bellene, Beaune Premier Cru Teurons 2009A serious, well-made Burgundy with red-berry nose, sweet fruit and rounded tannins. This Beaune premier cru is from the heart of the commune and overdelivers. Now to 2017. 13.5% The 2010 follows. ref CT-BU46341 £32 bottle £384 dozen

Domaine Maume, Gevrey-Chambertin 2011Maume’s house style is generosity, and this Gevrey is starting to show well now. Complex savoury and redcurrant nose, fine tannins, with tart red-berry flavours that develop leather notes in the glass. A long complex finish really displays the class here. Now to 2019. 13% ref CT-BU53431 £32 bottle £384 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Hermitage Rouge 2007This Hermitage has been held back for several years in The Society’s temperature-controlled cellars until ready to drink. It was made by Rhône supremo Jean-Louis Chave and is only the fourth of his reds to sport the Exhibition label. Very fine, elegant syrah with spice. Now to 2017. 14% ref CT-RH25981 £36 bottle £432 dozen

RED WINES Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso, Torre del Falasco 2013An intense and full-blooded ‘baby Amarone’ with ravishing ripe-fruit character and gorgeous, persistent notes of fig and raisin. Ripasso is made in the Amarone style but at a fraction of the cost, by passing new wine through barrels to which lees of Amarone have been added. A fine match for venison or cheeses. Now to 2018. 14% ref CT-IT19691 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Domaine Montangeron, Fleurie 2013Made from a number of different vineyard parcels (Chamilles, Champagne and Rochaux) situated mid-slope, this is a beautifully balanced cru Beaujolais. The 2012 is ripe yet fresh. Now to 2018. 13% ref CT-BU56821 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

Muga Reserva, Rioja 2010Muga is one of the most traditional Rioja estates and the current generation of the family is pushing their wines to unprecedented levels of quality and refinement. Dense, cedary and fresh with wonderful backbone, this youthful reserva is delicious now (although best decanted) and will improve for many years. Now to 2023. 14% The 2011 follows. ref CT-SP9561 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

Château de la Commanderie, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2010This 26-hectare château on Bordeaux’s right bank is owned by the Lafon family and planted with 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Vouvray Sec ‘Spring’, Carême 2014Vincent Carême farms organically and intervenes as little as possible in the cellar. This has appealing ripe-apple aroma and round flavour in a generous, friendly style. A modest yet classic Vouvray offering good value. 13% ref CT-LO11861 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Vieux Château Gaubert Blanc, Graves 2012Elegant example of modern Bordeaux white, fermented in barrel, of which 35% was new oak, this wine has now evolved so that the oak presents as texture more than flavour. A blend of 50:50 sauvignon-semillon, there is a rich lemon and green-apple perfume and great freshness to the palate. Drink this year and next. 12.5% ref CT-BW5211 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine du Vieux Lazaret 2012 The Quiot family are among the biggest vineyard owners in Châteauneuf with vines scattered around the appellation and theirs is always one of the more reasonably priced. Now to 2019. 14.5% ref CT-RH40611 £16.50 bottle £198 dozen

Saint-Joseph Silice, Domaine Coursodon 2012Made from young syrah vines, this is a ripe, fine northern Rhône that exudes charm and class. Madame de Château de Pitray, Côtes de Castillon 2008An elegant right bank claret with a complex cassis, leather and herbal nose. Merlot dominates but 30% cabernet franc adds to the complexity.
