The Weekend Sun50

Last week we said that “the word resolute implies

belief and attitudes with conviction and

determination”. When we read through

the Gospel of Luke, we can recognise a convic-tion in the life of Jesus that kept Him com-pletely focussed on His

life’s mission: to go to the cross.

In Luke 9:51-53 we read “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem... But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem’’.

The people did not like what Jesus was doing – resolutely or

What we call Easter is a worldly substitute for what God set in place in the Feast of

Passover. At least Easter should remind us of the substitutionary death of Jesus

Christ and His resurrection on the third day.

Passover: the spotless Lamb of God was slain

By Peter Whitcombe, Jesus First Church

The Feast of Passover is one of the seven Feasts of the Lord God set in place as His appointed feasts and as holy convocations (Leviticus 23:1–2).

The word translated ‘appointed’ refers to appointments in history when God says He will intervene. The word translated ‘convocations’ literally means dress rehearsal. These appointed con-vocations, the Feasts of the Lord, are times that God has set in the Hebrew calendar (which is the Biblical calendar) when His people are to gather together for a holy dress rehearsal to prepare them for that which He would do in fulfi lment of the dress rehearsal.

God gave specifi c instructions for what was to be done and the specifi c days of the year in which they were to occur. It was only in doing the specifi c things on the specifi c days as God instructed, and by knowing the rights and the ceremonies in these dress rehearsals, that His people would know the real thing when God came to fulfi l what they were rehearsing.

For 1500 years, God’s chosen people kept the Feast of Passover on Nisan 14,

doing ritually what God had said, in very detail, and on the day God had specifi ed.

Fifteen hundred years after these dress rehearsals began, exactly on Nisan 14 – on the exact day the dress rehearsal had been observed for 1500 years – the Feast of Passover was fulfi lled when Christ the Passover Lamb, the spot-less Lamb of God was slain. His death fulfi lled every single detail God had set in place in the dress rehearsal.

In fulfi lment of the fi rst four of the Feasts of the Lord, Christ was crucifi ed on Passover. He was buried on the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. He rose again on Nisan 16, the third day – on the day of the Feast of First Fruits. 50 days later, on the very day the Jews were observing the Feast of Pentecost, God came by His Spirit and fulfi lled exactly what had been observed in the dress rehearsals for 1500 years.

This Passover, we thank God for the substitutionary death of Jesus for our sin and for His resurrection giving us new life in Him. See you on Sunday at 10am or visit us at www.jesusfi rst.org.nz

By Richard Roodt, Bay Bible Fellowship

Resolute by Bay Bible – Part 2 of 3determinedly going to the cross. But Jesus kept going, and didn’t waver when they crucifi ed Him on Good Friday. He did this to show that “God so loved the world, that He sent His only Son… so that whoever believes in Him, may have eternal life”. Many people today don’t think Jesus’ death on the cross, and resurrection three days later (on Easter Sunday), is something that matters to them. Do you? This Easter, think about which beliefs and convictions really matter in your life. Won’t you consider being a resolute follower of Jesus Christ?

51The Weekend Sun

I grew up hearing that Jesus died for me, that the cross was the

only way for God to forgive my sin, and I took it all on board. But the questions remained;

like what is redemptive about the violence of the cross, and how does Jesus’ death acquire

forgiveness for us?If this is our only way of understand-

ing the cross, we end up with Jesus rescuing us from an angry God, with a God whose love is overshadowed by his anger.

And when we get to this point, we are no longer talking about God at all.

Jesus came to tell us about a father

who waits with forgiveness for his wayward child to come home.

Jesus makes it even clearer, when he says “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).

The cross is not about an angry God being appeased by the blood of the innocent.

Such a God is not worth worship-ping.

Yet the cross speaks of God sharing life with his people, with all the injus-tice, violence and tragedy that comes with it.

Because of the cross, God has entered our pain. Because of the cross, we’ll never be alone again.

Now that’s a God I can love.Rev Malcolm Gordon – Music Direc-

tor at St Peters Presbyterian

Here’s a confession: Easter makes me uncomfortable

Celebrating true meaning of Easter

By Stephen Tyrrell, pastor at South City

Baptist Church, Tauranga

later he came back from the dead to live forever more. The celebration of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus is one of the great turning points of history and of the Christian faith.

So I pray that this weekend will be more for you than a just holiday, but rather an opportu-nity to celebrate the love of God shown to us in the giving of His son.

There are a number of events on this Easter in churches throughout our city and maybe one of these could be a help for you to remember and understand the true meaning of Easter.

For many of my readers Easter

will be no more than the last long weekend before

winter. But also for many of you, this is the time when you, like me, remember the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ more than 2000

years ago.The Romans crucifi ed

many people in that time, so why take time to celebrate this one?

As far as something to remember goes, this seems gruesome, a long time ago, and on the other side of the world – so why do we remember this event which lasted a just few days and was centred on just one man?

This crucifi xion was different. The man on the cross was the son of God.

The suffering was not for the wrong he had done, but for the wrongdoing of the whole world.

The death that he experienced was not fi nal, and he proved that when three days

For many residents, it takes their home actually being burgled before they will

install a burglar alarm. But staff at Master Alarms Limited advise people to

get a security system before it’s too late, as in many instances homes get burgled again as the thieves assume they have new items paid by insurance com-panies.

What insurance companies cannot replace are the personal, sentimental items stolen.

vicing all brands of security systems in Tauranga for 11 years and favour using top of the line Bosch Security Systems at affordable prices.

Owner Chris O`Sullivan says most insurance com-panies offer a discount on premiums if homes have an alarm installed and this can go a long way towards any monitoring fees.

The company also specialises in supplying and installing CCTV digital surveillance systems, smoke alarms, access control systems and video door phones.

“Are you paying too much for your existing monitor-ing? We have a couple of options for you to consider if you are not locked into a long term contract.”
