ADULT TAPMARCH 2 - MAY 4FRIDAYS | 6-7:30 PM$60-$240 | 10 SESSIONSAdult tap builds the skills of a percussive improviser from basic vocabulary up to personal expression. Each class consists of a rhythmic warm up, explorations in musicality, partner dynamics, and form, and jamming together to a variety of music, some weeks with live guest musicians! There is a basic lineup of steps to learn when you begin tap; the trick is practicing, discovering new rhythms and combinations, throwing them out, catching them in a new way and tuning into a full physical experience.Artist: Ilona Bito

In addition to improving work this will help participants build a new community and support system of artists, curators, and gallerists. INTERDISCIPLINARY EMERGENYCAPRIL 22-JULY 22Launched in 2008 by the Hemispheric Institute at NYU—and now housed at Abrons—EMERGENYC is a 3-month incubator for emerging artists working at the intersection of performance and politics. Offering varied entry points into art and activism, the annual program selects about 18 artists and fosters a ‘brave space’ for experimentation and risk-taking. Each student will build vocabulary about their own performance practices; collect the written analysis of their work from the other participants; and write theoretical texts about the work of their peers. CREATION MYTHSAGES 9 – 13SATURDAYS | 12 – 1 PM$75-$300 | 14 SESSIONSUsing the mythology and creation stories of ancient cultures, students will create an original work of theater through writing, improvisation and devised scene work. Engage with the creation mythology of ancient cultures, including the Greeks and Egyptians. URBAN YOUTH THEATER // MUSICAL PERFORMANCE INTENSIVE AGES 14 – 18TUESDAYS | 5 –7 PM; SATURDAYS | 3 – 5 PMPERFORMANCES | MAY 10 & 11 | 7PM FREEUrban Youth Theater Ensemble is a laboratory for teens at Abrons Arts Center. Each year the company performs a season of originally devised works and re-interpretations of classical texts. Working under the direction of New York City-based directors, writers, and designers, UYT gives young performers the opportunity to participate in a pre-professional company. Participants must be dedicated, respectful of each other’s ideas, and willing to take artistic risks.

Young actors who choose to participate in the Musical Performance Intensive will receive a crash course in the skills required to perform in Broadway-style musicals. After spending time with the history of the American

Musical, students will learn Broadway standards, drill choreography and tighten their acting chops in a musical revue designed entirely by their ensemble. All skill levels are welcome.

Through floorwork, standing warm up exercises and partner weight sharing explorations, students practice how to build a strong base of supportive muscular engagement and prepare their bodies for safe, aligned dancing. Class includes improvised movement scores, introduction to inversions and lots of choreographed movement phrases focusing primarily on development of timing, rhythm, weight and momentum. Through level appropriate barre exercises students are encouraged to recognize their individual anatomy and learn how to practice ballet in a secure and effective way, placing a strong emphasis on épaulement (upper body) working in harmony with the rest of the body. Center exercises further develop an awareness of technique using accessible combinations that are designed to escalate in complexity, giving the dancer the substantial benefit of a classical ballet class. Through weekly rehearsals and regular performance opportunities at a wide range of venues throughout New York and beyond, company members develop skills of collaboration, refine their performance technique, and experience the joys and rigors of working closely with other creative and gifted dance artists.
