Pressing on Pressure
Driving Question
What are the different
types of pressures experienced by an
individual in his life ?
End Product
To create a model displaying any application of
the concept of pressure.
Essential Learning Levels
The students will be able to:
• Explain the concept of pressure and its
dependence on force and area.
• Define fluid pressure and state its
properties.
• Explain how pressure is measured.
• Relate and apply their knowledge about
pressure and its effects in real life
situations.
Beginning to get under pressure…
The Process
A robust discussion and observation of slice-of-life examples such
as aerated drinks and blood pressure led to the children
classifying pressure into different categories and making a note of
the same in their organisers.
Pressure to reach conclusions…
Types of Pressure
‘Relative pressure’
Deducing the relationship between Force, Area
and Pressure.
Am I a ‘Heavy weight’ pressure …
Yes- Pressure is exerted by the body.
Calculating the amount of pressure exerted by our body when we are standing on both feet.
Students watched the movie
‘Gravity’ to gain an understanding
of what life would be like if there
was no atmospheric Pressure.
‘All Afloat’-The ‘No Gravity’ world’
They also learnt
“Never give up: There is
always another plan or
another idea that can be
improvised. If you think
you’re out of options, think
harder.”
Experiment with Pressure Which way does water run ?
The students conducted
experiments in the lab
and, recorded their
conclusions .
Dr. Ritika, spoke about the various kinds of pressures
experienced by our body and the instruments used to
measure them.
Doctor Pressure
Pressure… Time to reason
The students solved application based numericals on ‘Pressure’.
Pressure to find the right answer…
The students shared their understanding that ‘Pressure’ is not just a scientific phenomena but also exists in different forms in day to day life. They communicated this to their peers in class by using different forms of expression such as poetry and painting.
Poetic Touch
Creative Pressure …
Assessment and Observations
Students attempted 1. Written assignments :The relation between Force, Area and Pressure ; Fluid
Pressure, Atmospheric Pressure, Blood Pressure, and application based Questions and Numericals based on the calculation of pressure exerted by the body.
2. Lab Activities:Calculation of Pressure exerted as a result of body weight; Fluid Pressure as a result of depth, Verifying the properties of Air Pressure , Calculation of Blood Pressure with the Device meant for it and Atmospheric Pressure.
3. Group Discussion on different types of pressure experienced by the Human Body, Relation between force, area and pressure, Life without gravity, Diseases related to Blood pressure – cause and effects, Pressure exerted by liquids 4. Oral Presentation on - The models displaying the concepts of Pressure; Expression of the term ‘Pressure’ using creative forms such as poetry or art work and life without ‘Gravity’. 5. Peer Review on the models presented by their peers.
