Class of the Week – S2B

Our major focus in S2B this semester has been project-based learning. Last term, our focus was

on Inquiry Learning and this term we are targeting STEM.

In Term 3, we investigated the world of convicts in our ‘Early Contacts’ unit of work. Examining

the impact the early settlers had on Indigenous people, the Australian environment and the

European people relocating to Australia.

This term, S2B have been enjoying learning all about animals through weekly STEM challenges

that see them design and make objects based on a ‘driving question’. They have explored

prehistoric and extinct animals, rainforest animal habitats and Halloween animals through the

process of ‘learning by doing’. Project-based learning helps the students in S2B to become

problem solvers, work collaboratively and promotes their critical thinking.

All things animals has been our focus this term, with the class participating in Stage 2 animal

groups to learn about garden animals, pets, safari animals and ocean animals. We are looking

forward to heading to Bateau Bay Beach and the Marine Discovery Centre in the coming weeks

to test out all our new knowledge!

Stars of the Week

This week, I was visited by some very talented

writers and mathematicians from S2B.

Miss Baldock, and the students in S2B are

learning all about ‘Deforestation’ as part of their

HSIE unit ‘Animals’. After watching the video

‘There’s a Rang-Tan in my bedroom’ S2B have

been undertaking research tasks about how

deforestation is the cause of many of our world’s

unique creatures becoming endangered or even

extinct – such as orang-utans and the Sumatran

Tiger.

Did you know that the Palm Oil Industry is a

major factor in habitat degradation, climate

change and animal cruelty in those countries

where this product is produced (e.g. Borneo and

Sumatra)?

Congratulations to the following students who

were chosen to share their stories with me,

which were written from the perspective on an

endangered orang-utan – Mim C, Alisha H and

Hannah L.

If you would like to watch this video with your

child and learn more about their plight you can

find the link at –

I also had the privilege of seeing some amazing

Maths work from Corey P and Abbie N. The

students in S2B have been learning all about co-

ordinates and how to interpret maps, and

describe position, based upon an object’s grid

co-ordinates. Abbie and Corey confidently

explained special concepts such ‘x-axis and ‘y-

axis’.

Great job, S2B! Keep up the awesome work!

Personal Best Awards

Congratulations to the following students who

have recently received a ‘Personal Best Award’

for achieving one of their personal goals:

Principal’s Puzzle

Congratulations to Asha C and Louise S (S2B)

who solved last week’s Principal’s Puzzle. The

correct answer was, ‘holes’.

Kinder Transition

Last Wednesday was a very busy and exciting

day for the newest members of our school

because it was Kinder Graduation Day. It was

great seeing all of their smiling faces and

watching the K-1 students perform at our special

assembly. It was fantastic seeing so many of our

future students navigating around the school

with their Year 5 buddies as part of this year’s

‘treasure hunt’. This activity is a great way to

get to know the different locations around the

school and the people that make them special!

Coordinating this important Transition Program

takes a huge amount of time and effort and Miss

Chappell, Miss Ardagh and Mrs Bolte must be

congratulated for their wonderful organisation

and their unfailing enthusiasm and support for our new families each and every week! My thanks to

Jo Kelly (Canteen Manager) for providing

morning tea for all of our special guests who were

able to attend our Kinder Graduation.

It was my pleasure being invited to share in the

celebrations and present our new Kinder

enrolments with their graduation portfolios as a

memento of their first taste of ‘big school’. We look

forward to welcoming all of our new students and

their families back to Erina Heights PS at the

beginning of 2019 – Miss Chappell is busy

organising the BEST Start schedule. Parents of

Kindergarten students will soon have the

opportunity to book in their child’s BEST Start

Assessment online. Our new Kinder students will

officially start on Monday 4 February (9:15am

– 2:15pm) for the first week of their primary

education.

Staffing News

We welcome Mrs Lanning back to school next

Monday following her time with her newly born

grandson, Mason! Our thanks to Mr Power for

taking care of S2/3L during this time.

In other staffing news, I am most pleased to

announce that Craig Ward has recently been

successful in gaining the permanent General

Assistant’s position following a competitive merit

selection process – congratulations Craig, very well

deserved. I would also like to thank Liza Granger

who assisted me throughout this entire process as

the parent representative.

Parent Helpers & Volunteers Afternoon Tea

We would like to acknowledge the support offered

by our school community and invite our parent

A flyer with a description of the roles and

responsibilities for each position has been

included with this week’s newsletter.

My sincere thanks to all of the parents and staff

who volunteered at last week’s P&C fundraiser

at Bunnings (Erina) – your support of this

event was greatly appreciated!

‘Carols at the Heights’: SAVE THE DATE!

Dust off your reindeer antlers or elf ears, have

your Santa hats dry cleaned and practice your

‘Ho, Ho, Ho’s’ and let the caroling begin! Erina

Heights PS staff, in partnership with the school

P&C, is proud to host this year’s Christmas

Carols afternoon on Thursday 12 December

from 4:00 – 6:00pm. This event has been

officially approved by the North Pole and will be

held in the school hall and external COLA area.

More information to come soon!

Presentation Day – Friday 14 December

Our students will be recognised for their

academic, creative, sporting and personal

achievements and progress at our school

Presentation Day on Friday 14 December.

Please note, this year’s ceremony will be held as

two separate assemblies in an attempt to reduce

the amount of time our younger students have

to sit through our presentations / speeches.

Infants Award Ceremony (K-2): 9:15 am

– 10:45 am.

Primary Award Ceremony (3-6): 11:30

am – 12:45 pm.

The K-2 students will join our older students at

approximately 12:00pm so they can see the

senior students being presented with the most

prestigious awards (e.g. Sports Person of the

Year, DUX – for academic excellence).

Parents of those children who will be receiving

an award will be invited to attend the ceremonies

to celebrate their children’s achievements and

efforts – invitation letters will be distributed

shortly so parents and carers may make the

helpers and volunteers to have afternoon tea

with us on Friday 23 November commencing

at 1:00 pm in the school library. Please save

the date!

P&C News

Last Tuesday, our P&C held their AGM and

elected office bearers for 2019. Unfortunately,

not all executive positions were filled on the

night and we call for any nominations for the

following positions, which remain open at this

stage – President and Treasurer. We are also

looking for some enthusiastic community

members to head our Fundraising Committee

for 2019 – but don’t panic, there is no School

Fete until 2020! If you would like to run for one

of these very important roles please don’t

hesitate to contact the front office

(43677608) and we will put you in contact with

Amy Ferrier (Vice President).

I would like to take this opportunity to formally

acknowledge and thank this year’s Executive and

various P&C committees for all of their hard work

and assistance to our school. The P&C

executive dedicate a huge amount of time

voluntarily for the benefit of all students at our

school and they all deserve to be congratulated

for the countless hours they have devoted to

Erina Heights PS.

In particular, I would like to acknowledge the

efforts of our outgoing President, Sarah Proud,

for her leadership and dedication in providing

countless opportunities for our school, and your

children, to be involved in a variety of

community-based and school initiatives. I would

also like to thank our outgoing Treasurer, Liza

Granger, for keeping the P&C financial and for

contributing to a number of community-based

grants that have led to the purchase of a digital

LED sign that will be installed in the near future.

Finally, my sincere thanks to our hardworking

Secretary, Gillian Frost, who keeps us all well-

informed and organised during those busy times

of year. She also takes minutes and sends

correspondence out to the broader community

on behalf of the P&C Association.

I would also like to express my gratitude to those

parents who were nominated and duly elected as

office bearers and committee members for 2019.

Congratulations to the following parents for their

election to the Executive Committee of our P&C

• President – To be advised

• Vice President – Amy Ferrier

• Treasurer – To be advised

• Secretary – Katherine Wilton

necessary arrangements to see their child

receive this special recognition.

My sincere thanks to the office staff for all of

their hard work in helping to prepare for this

special assembly. I would also like to

acknowledge the school executive staff and all

of the other teachers for assisting with the

organisation of this special event.

School Planning – 2019

Please remember, if you have any concerns

pertaining to your child’s class placement next

year, please take the time to write to your child’s

class teacher, or one of our Stage Supervisors

(Miss Chappell - K-2, Miss Baldock - Stage 2

and Mrs Stahl - Stage 3) so we can ensure we

are addressing any requests when classes are

being established.

I must stress, that any parents who request

specific teachers will be left disappointed,

however, I am happy for parents to outline

aspects of their child’s learning and development

that may need special consideration when

forming class compositions, which may impact

upon their academic, social or emotional

wellbeing.

Staff Development Days - Thursday 20- Friday 21 December

As reported earlier in the year, the two Staff

Development Days scheduled for Thursday 20

and Friday 21 December have been varied

with staff attending a number of professional

development afternoons throughout the year.

Please note that the last day for our students and

teaching staff at Erina Heights Public School is

Wednesday 19 December. We thank all

families for their continued support of these

invaluable professional development

opportunities.

Greg Francis – Relieving Principal

Helpers Afternoon Tea

The staff would like to show their appreciation to

all members of the school community who have

assisted in many areas of school life during 2018.

We value all those who volunteer their time

helping in the classrooms, Scripture/Ethics,

sporting events and the Fete to name a few.

Please join us for afternoon tea on Friday, 23rd

November at 1pm in the Library.

A Message from the P& C

A huge thank you to all volunteers at the P&C

fundraising event at Bunnings Erina last

weekend. $781.70 was raised which will go

towards supporting the students at EHPS.

A special mention of gratitude goes to Kylie

Currell for her organisation and management at

the event over the weekend.

Many thanks also to our outgoing P&C

executive for their time, effort and service over

many years at EHPS. Sarah Proud, Liza Granger

and Gillian Frost have been dedicated members

of our P&C and are now stepping down from

executive positions for a variety of reasons.

Thank you to Katherine Wilton for joining the

executive as our new Secretary. The positions

of President and Treasurer still need to be filled

and we look forward to hearing from any

interested school community members.

Our next P&C meeting will be held in week 9.

All welcome to attend.
