Today’s Commencement is a magnificent celebration of our Cañada students and the remarkable accomplishments and successes they have achieved. Our graduates and those joining in this celebration today will be hearing many speeches about the bright, promising future that lies ahead for our graduates. Collectively, we share in the excitement of where the next journey may take them. Graduates are also encouraged at the time of Commencement to look back on their experiences – to reflect on what lessons they have learned, who influenced them, and how they have grown and changed. We know that this reflection is important. So, now that we’ve got the past and the future addressed, I’d like to ask you to think about the present –in fact, this very moment. As students of Cañada and of life, you’re neither at the beginning or the end of your journey. Instead, you’re somewhere in-between – in the middle you might say. You don’t know what lies ahead and you can’t go back and relive the past. It’s challenging to be in the moment; to fully inhabit, explore, and ex-perience every moment – and to be open to what might present itself to you. While in the present moment, you might find that you can be more open to a different point of view; you may have an opportunity to extend a kindness to another person; you might be able to quiet all the voices telling you what you should do; you might find the courage to make a difficult choice; you might find some unexpected joy. And, being in the moment almost always allows you to listen to your own inner guide and heart. And that is super important! Finally, being in the moment allows you to more fully embrace and enjoy celebrations like this one today! So, take a moment, right now and look around at your fellow classmates, your family and friends, and your Cañada family, who have come together to honor you. All eyes are on you and they’re beaming with pride for all that you’ve done, and all that you are! Congratulations!

Jennifer Hughes, Interim President, Cañada College

President’s Welcome

Laura MartinezRaised in East Palo Alto, Laura has spent more than a decade working with East Palo Alto youth (and their families) and is keenly aware of the community concerns that still need support. In fact, her passion to educate youth on the importance of preparing for college, career readiness and participating in extracurricular activities was a driving force behind her desire to become a leader in her community.

In 2008, Laura became the first Latina council member to serve the City of East Palo Alto. In 2011, at the age of 27, she was elected the youngest serving, and first Latina mayor, in East Palo Alto’s history. While she served as city council member and mayor, Laura worked to successfully balance the city’s budget without layoffs, prioritized the economic development plan and promoted health and recreation by supporting the city’s first open space park. She also worked to bring a full-service grocery store to East Palo Alto, helped to improve safety through building more sidewalks to schools and supported a gang dismantling operation reducing overall crime by 15 percent. In addition, she was selected by Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal as one of the “Top 100 Women of Influence” in 2012 and “40 Under 40” in 2015.

Laura was appointed to the Sequoia Union High School District and served as a Trustee from March-December 2015. In addition, she is an Expanded Learning Director at Aspire Public Schools, supporting students and families at East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy. She serves on the board of East Palo Alto Police Activities League.

The first in her family to graduate from a four-year college, Laura received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, with a minor in Spanish, from Whittier College. She currently resides in East Palo Alto.

Class of 2016 Valedictorian

Dan ZhaoDan Zhao grew up in Jiangsu Province of China where she attended Taixing Middle School. She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in English from China Women’s University and a Master’s Degree in Linguistics from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Her goal was to become an English teacher in China.

She came to California with her husband when he found a job in the Bay Area. She was on a visa which did not provide for a work permit. Her degree was no help in securing her a job that sponsored a visa with a work permit. She spent her first two years as a homemaker, but aspired to be an independent and self-sustaining woman. While living in Foster City, she learned about Cañada College and enrolled in Spring 2014. She had no idea at that time what she wanted to study. She’d had slight exposure to math and science in her earlier studies so she thought to try these again. Thus, she enrolled in CIS 250, Introduction to Object Oriented Program, C++, and Math 251, Analytic Geometry and Calculus I. To her surprise, this English and Linguistics major enjoyed and excelled in both courses. Though she was nervous at the beginning, she found the instructors and students very welcoming. Her interest in science lead her to declare a major in Computer Science. This Spring, she is enrolled in 24 units and is taking courses at Cañada College, Skyline College and College of San Mateo.

Dan has loved her experience at Cañada College and with Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society. She is especially thankful for her professors and the tutors in the Learning Center. She is also a member of the Computer Science Club, where students help each other with coding problems. They also arranged to visit the Computer Science Museum and various IT companies.

She also credits her loving family – her parents and younger brother, for the support they have provided throughout her life. Her father always instilled in her the importance of being optimistic about life which is something she has never forgotten. Her mother always encouraged her to pursue her own dream, and be persistent when there is difficulty. Her brother is a good listener who is supportive when she feels down about her life, and happy for her when she is doing well. Dan plans to transfer in Fall 2016 to University of California, Irvine, to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. She then plans to return to the Bay Area to pursue a career at one of the many high-tech companies in the area.

President’s Student Leadership Award

Jessica S. RoseJessica began her studies at Cañada College in Spring 2012 after having worked in Reality TV as a Producer and Casting Professional for nearly 10 years. Though she did not initially know what she wanted to study, Jessica quickly found a love of mathematics. However, when NASA landed their Mars rover, Curiosity, Jessica knew that if she could even be fractionally involved with something like that, she would be content for the rest of her life. Her long term goal is to work with NASA or a private space program after finishing her studies as an Applied Mathematics major at San Francisco State University, where she is transferring Fall 2016.

While at Cañada, Jessica has been an active Phi Theta Kappa member and officer since Fall 2012. She was also the Astronomy Club President this past year. Additionally, she was a member of the Honors Transfer Program and presented her research on Native American Astronomy at UC Berkeley in 2014. In their nomination of Jessica for this Award, Professors Paul Roscelli and Jessica Kaven characterized her as, “a gifted, curious, thoughtful, tenacious and humble scholar.” They described Jessica’s genuine, personal interest in the success of her fellow students. Jessica embraced leadership opportunities on-campus and impressively represented our College in the community.

In her spare time, Jessica enjoys traveling and playing video games with her husband, Brandon, as well as spending time with friends and playing with her two cats, Castor and Pollux.

Class of 2016 Student Speaker

Dominique Franceschi SuescunDominique enrolled full-time at Cañada College in Fall 2014 as an International Student coming from Bogotá, Colombia. Before coming to Cañada, she completed the Misi 4-year Musical Theater program in her hometown, and prior to that graduated from the Anglo Colombian School with an International Baccalaureate diploma. She chose Cañada College because of the friendly and welcoming environment they promoted, and all the tools that are available to help students achieve their dreams to their fullest potential.

During her time at Cañada, Dominique was President of the Multicultural Awareness Project (MAP) Club, Commissioner of Publicity and Senator for the Associated Students of Cañada College and a member of Glee Club, Journalism Club, and Drama Club. Dominique also held several campus positions. She was an International Student Ambassador at the International Student Center, a Student Assistant at the Cañada College Bookstore, and Tutored ESL, English, Communications, Music and Drama at the Learning Center. In her spare time, she taught dance at The Tutu School and volunteer with Relay for Life in Redwood City.

Dominique will be transferring to the American Music and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Performing Arts, where she hopes to continue to grow as a student, performer and human being.

The colorful attire worn by the graduates, the faculty and officers of the College on the occasion of Commencement has historic roots in medieval times. A statute in 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. Academic attire began to appear on United States campuses in the late 1890’s. A conference was held in May of 1895 at Columbia University with college representatives to establish a code of regalia for American colleges and universities. Since then there have been a few revisions, but what remains in a tradition of colors found in gowns, hoods and caps.

The faculty Grand Marshal will carry an academic mace at today’s ceremony. The academic mace, first used in the 14th century, is descended from the club of Hercules. The scepter on the mace stands for lawful power and regal authority, and was carried by Zeus, the Greek God of moral law and order. Cañada’s mace is made primarily of Red Oak with Olivewood embellishments. xThese are two trees which are abundant on the Cañada College campus.

Bachelor’s and Master’s gowns show pointed sleeves, open yokes and no trimmings. Doctoral gowns have bell shaped sleeves and velvet trimming. Hoods are worn over the gown to designate bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees. Hoods are not worn for associate degrees. Inside all hoods are the colors of the college or university granting the degree. The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood is determined by the degree subject awarded.

Cañada Honor SashesStudents graduating with Honors designations are awarded sashes which signify their level of academic achieve-ment. Students who are graduating with Summa Cum Laude designation (4.0 cumulative GPA) receive a gold sash; students graduating with magna Cum Laude designation (3.5 and above cumulative GPA) receive a silver sash, students graduating with Cum Laude designation (3.3 and above cumulative GPA) receive a bronze sash. Students who are eligible for Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society receive a gold PTK sash.

In Memoriam

Clarence Edward Webster Jr. • 02/25/1987 – 12/23/2015With a passion for early childhood education, Clee Webster saw himself as a role model for the youth he spent his days working with as well as for his own son. One of Clee’s biggest motivations to attend college was to set an example for his young son, Julyen. That motivation drove him to complete his Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education here at Cañada College. Later, he was accepted into Menlo College and, in December 2015, Clee had just made Honor Roll during his first semester; he was planning to major in Business. A Menlo Park resident, Clee had

recently been promoted to Program Assistant at the City’s after-school program in Belle Haven. His friends hope to continue his legacy: “Don’t give up on people. Be compassionate. And don’t give up when something gets challenging.”

James Warren Keller • 06/28/1950 – 01/23/2016Jim Keller committed himself to a career in public education, delivering and administering affordable and cutting-edge higher education for everyone with the desire, from any and all walks of life. He began his career in the Palo Alto Unified School District, followed by positions with West Valley-Mission and Foothill-DeAnza Community College Districts. He served as Cañada’s Interim President, 2011-2012. Dean David Johnson expresses, “I remember Jim as a kind soul with a big heart and a great sense of humor. He was deeply committed to supporting

students and he truly loved Cañada College.” He finished his extraordinary career as Deputy Chancellor of our San Mateo County Community College District where he was dedicated to the enrichment of the life of each and every student through education.

The Class of 2016 honors the memory of three members of our Cañada family. They are in our hearts today.

Peter James Katsumis • 05/01/1926 – 11/03/2015Pete Katsumis, former Director of Security at Cañada College, was a part of the College’s security force from 1969 until 2008. Prior to Cañada, he worked with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office for several years and brought the professional experience gained as a sheriff to the college campus. Pete viewed campus safety and security as a team effort. Administrative Services team member Vickie Nunes remembers, “Pete was always smiling, always here, and always helpful.” Outside of Cañada, Pete was very involved with youth sports. He coached both Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball teams and was the President

of the Babe Ruth League for several years. He also was a referee for high school football, high school basketball and umpired both NCAA and high school baseball.
