Class of 1966 -- 50 Year Reunion June 18, 2016

Women’s Club of Wisconsin ~ 813 East Kilbourn Avenue ~ Milwaukee, Wisconsin

WHAT I LEARNED AT MY 50 YEAR HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

1. OLD FRIENDS ARE PURE GOLD: Some of us attended elementary school, then junior high school, then high school, together. Others joined us along the way. Still others were with us many years and then moved away. We made very dear friends!

2. PEOPLE ARE PRECIOUS: At life’s end, the things that will matter are faith, family, and friends. Some of our dear friends have died. They were precious friends.

3. LIFE IS SHORT: Our teachers invested their lives in us. They taught us and treasured us just the way we were! Many of our teachers have died, some at an early age and some just recently. They were all a big part of our school years!

4. THERE IS A LOT TO BE SAID FOR STABILITY: Some of us stayed in the same house throughout our school years. At the time, we probably thought it was boring – the same all the time, but there is a lot to be said for same-ol-same!

5. THE “HIGH SCHOOL YOU” IS NOT THE REAL YOU: In high school you were still growing. Yes, some of you had driver’s licenses, some had afternoon jobs, and some had responsibilities at home. The senior pictures were not the “real you.” You were still becoming the “you” of today. Some have done significant things with their lives, but some never grew beyond high school. Most of us are wonderful, successful, and still “cool” in our golden years!

6. TO YOUR CLASS, YOU WILL ALWAYS LOOK LIKE YOU DID A HALF-CENTURY AGO: You look around the room at all the 68-year-olds, but you feel that you do not look at "old." The truth is, we see each other as teenagers when we played Beatles records at the dances, cheered the football team, and went on field trips. We see our class!

7. BY NOW, YOU ARE BEYOND SHOWING OFF; YOU NO LONGER NEED TO PROVE ANYTHING: To go to this reunion, you do not need to buy or rent a new car because no one even sees what kind of car you are driving. And, no one cares. We do not need to impress anyone!

8. THE PEER PRESSURE IS GONE NOW. BE YOURSELF!: We often said things or did things because of peer pressure. It is not important anymore. The most important thing is to be yourself and be comfortable with who you are.

9. THESE CLASSMATES ARE PRETTY SPECIAL PEOPLE AND WERE THEN TOO!: We have become pretty special people, but we forget that we were pretty special people then too! We are awesome!!

10. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO REPAIR A RELATIONSHIP, TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS, OR TO THANK SOMEONE! It feels good!

When you are 18 years old, you feel that anything seems possible. You have big dreams of what your future may be. When you are 68 years old, you have gained wisdom and have learned much through the years. You know how your life turned out! Over the 50 years, we experienced loss and heartbreak, illness, and disabilities, but in spite of that, almost everyone I talked to said that they had a good life. So, why do we have affection for all of these people and what are some reasons nobody forgets their high school years? This was the place I grew up. This is my spiritual home. This was the place I felt safe. This was my home. These are the people who formed who I was to become. These are the friends who were there when I was learning. These are the friends who teach me now! They teach me about the importance of enjoying the moment and living it well. They teach me the strength of humility. They teach me gratitude and they show me love and happiness!

Thank you dear friends!
