Claire Collins (right) with teammate Emily Kallfelz, both Princeton ’19, row in the ivy League Championship, May 2016.

Claire Collins ’11, a standout athlete, student, and musician during her 11 years at WES, is now a junior at Princeton rowing for their crew team. She and her sisters Faith ’07, and Sarah ’13, and her parents spent the Christmas holidays in France, where Sarah is spending a gap year. It was a pleasure to see her at the January reunion and hear about her latest experiences.

As a WES “lifer,” having started at WES in Nursery and graduated in 2011, what are some your favorite WES memories? Hmmm! So many! Well Mr. Bane’s 4A class was a peak because we had our own rap CD and listened to a lot of Lil Mama. The ancient Egypt unit in Social Studies in Ms. Berman’s sixth-grade class was also a good time. We really experienced the culture back then by going through rituals such as a burial and a mummification. Playing “Farkle” (a dice game) with Mr. Chalfin during lunch in middle school was also fun. He would tease us a lot. Chandler Hughes, Sierra Jones, Peter Abdow, Cornelia Smith, Katie DeVries and I all had a lot of fun in Ms. Miller’s art course too. Of course, the trips were highlights! Discovering Italy through food, art, and history was amazing. Staying with host families in Paris was our first taste of independence and seeing the breath-taking canyons out west was a treat.

Where did you go to school after WES? After WES, I went to a boarding school in western Massachusetts--Deerfield Academy. WES prepared me extremely well for this next challenge. I had good time management skills and I could set goals and standards for myself, academically, athletically, and musically (I played the trumpet in the band at WES and also played the violin and continued that in high school). WES taught me to be comfortable approaching teachers and to be curious and creative. Because of the constant student involvement in classes at WES, I was comfortable speaking and participating during class in high school. I also was eager to be involved in many aspects of school life. I participated in sports,

music, student government, the baking club, a Christian Fellowship, among other groups at Deerfield.

And now you’re in college. Tell us about that. I am a junior at Princeton University. I am an economics major and am happily living on campus (most Princeton students stay on campus for all four years). I am on the rowing team and I am in a bible study with Princeton Faith and Action (a Christian group). I am on the Varsity Student Athletic Advisory Committee (VSAAC) and am working on creating a female athlete group on campus. I am part of an eating club (specific to Princeton, but kind of like coed Greek life), Cloister Inn. I also teach swim lessons, which is so fun!

Princeton has given me great opportunity to travel. After my freshman year, I went on a service trip to Vietnam through a program called Coach for College. I taught English and coached volleyball for 3 weeks to children ages 11-14 in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. Afterwards, my sister (Faith ’07) and I traveled to Hong Kong and Thailand.

Also after my freshman year, I traveled to England with the Princeton rowing team to row at the Women’s Henley Regatta and the Royal Henley Regatta. We were training and racing for three weeks over there.

Athletics have always been a big part of your life. In fact, you received the WES Coaches Award in 2011. Tell us about your favorite sports. Yes, I have always LOVED athletics. I think they teach great lessons and are extremely fun, challenging, and exciting. I grew up swimming and was swimming competitively starting at age 10. Swimming taught me a lot mentally and about the journey as an athlete. It also taught me discipline (early mornings! Yay!) and drive. At WES, I played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Wow that was fun! I was competitive, but I loved the team aspect that I didn’t always get while swimming.

It makes it even more fun when you play on the same team as your classmates. We had great bus rides, exciting overtimes, and upsets. It was also very fun to play against the boys every once in a while.

How did you get interested in rowing? At Deerfield, I played volleyball in the fall, continued swimming in the winter, and then all the swimmers either did water polo or rowing. My sister and my swim coach suggested I try rowing and I found that I enjoyed it and had some natural talent.

Tell us about your rowing pursuits. After my freshman year of high school, I was selected for the US Junior National rowing team. I competed on the Junior National team for three years, earning two silver medals. I also won two Youth National Championships with my Deerfield boat. After high school, I was recruited to row at Princeton. Here I have won two Ivy championships in the varsity 8+, placed in the top 10 at NCAAs twice, won the Women’s Henley Regatta in England, and made it to the semifinals of the Royal Henley Regatta. I am a Second Team All American, two time first All Ivy League, and a 2017 Spring Academic All-Ivy League. This summer I competed for the US U23 team in the Women’s 8+ and got silver at the U23 World Championships. I look forward to trying out for the U23 team again this summer and have some rowing goals beyond that, but one day at a time.

What advice can you offer WES students and graduates today? My advice to WES students is to get to know your teachers. They care for you a lot. Have fun and learn from your friends. Always ask questions. Do not be afraid to try something new or step out of your comfort zone; the more you do it now the easier it will be later. Also, take pictures and write memories down because you will want to remember them later.
