Class Notes Spring 2018 Robert C. Stackhouse ’51 passed away at the age of 94, in Norfolk, VA on May 27, 2018. He was born on Oct 10, 1923 in Medford, NJ. Robert served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II and after the war, he resumed his education at Haverford College. He transferred to William & Mary where he earned his Bachelor’s degree and graduated from the Law School. Robert started his career with the firm of Louis Fine and practiced law for almost 70 years. Robert was a founding member or various institutions including the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Heritage Bank and Trust, and the Marshall-Wythe Law School Foundation. Robert was an ordained Elder of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church and was active in Presbytery matter, representing the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia in legal matters. Robert was a warm, patient, loving, proud and humorous father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Louise Morton Stackhouse, his three children, Clint Stackhouse, Mary Yoder, and Stephen Stackhouse, as well as his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. James E. Lawrence ’55 passed away on March 15, 2018 at the age of 88. He was born on June 20, 1929 at Fort Monroe, VA. He graduated from St. Vincent High School in Newport News, VA and received his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from William & Mary. Shortly after getting his degrees, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate in 1960 and retired in 1988 earning the Legion of Merit, six Meritorious Service Medals, and two Commendation medals. Colonel Lawrence was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hampton, VA, Knights of Columbus Council No. 511, and the Virginia State Bar. James Goodson III ’65 passed away at the age of 79, in Danville, VA on March 30, 2018. He was born on February 12, 1939 in Danville. He was a graduate of the Whitmell Farm Life School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech, and continued his education at William & Mary Law School. Robert C. Stackhouse ’51 passed away at the age of 94, in Norfolk, VA on May 27,

1961, he scored the second highest on the law school entrance exam and went to William

& Mary. Kevin practiced real estate law for over 40 years and was a member of the

Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association, the Virginia Beach Bar Association, the Virginia Bar

Association, and the American Bar Association.

Nicholas DeRoma ’71 has been appointed to be the new chairman of the American

Liver Foundation’s National Board of Directors. He has served on the National Board

of Directors for the ALF for ten years and is a member of the Executive Committee

and the co-chair of the Audit Committee. DeRoma is a former partner and current

member of the Advisory Board of Rosenzweig & Company. He also has served as the

general counsel of IBM North America, Europe-Middle East-Africa, and Asia.

Steve A. Isaacs ’73 has been named the recipient of the William R. Rakes Leadership in

Education Award from the Virginia State Bar Section on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia.

Isaacs has been the director of the Character and Fitness Committee of the Virginia Board of

Bar Examiners (VBBE) since its inception in 1995 where he is working directly with the

faculty and deans of each of Virginia’s law schools. The Rakes award recognizes an individual

who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in developing and implementing

innovative concepts to improve and enhance the states of legal education, advancing

relationships and professionalism among members, the bench, and the bar within Virginia.

Ben Hubbard ’73 has joined the law firm of Pender & Coward in its

Chesapeake, VA location. He concentrates his practice in the areas of

construction law and mediation and arbitration. He represents commercial

and industrial contracting firms performing federal, state, local, and private

market construction contracting. He also serves as an alternative dispute

resolution arbitrator and mediator. Ben has been a featured speaker at

various continuing legal education seminars on the Federal Miller Act and

State of Virginia Little Miller Act.

Anita O. Poston ’74 has been selected to be in the Class of 2018 Virginia Lawyers Hall of

Fame. Anita is a partner at the Norfolk, VA office of Vandeventer Black LLP. Her practice is

concentrated in business law with a focus on transportation, healthcare, surety defense and

estate planning and administration. She is heavily involved in many bar activities, business-

related organizations, and local and state educational institutions. She has been appointed

by the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Virginia as a chair and member of several

federal magistrate selection commissions.

Susan E. Satkowski ’81 has been appointed to serve as the Honorary Consul to

Norway in Pennsylvania. She has represented the interests of corporations

and other businesses in civil litigation. She has served on the boards of various

cultural and charitable organization. Currently, she’s on the board of the

Norwegian 30K Challenge, a non-profit organization to assist U.S. veterans. She has

maintained close ties with her family in Norway and will work to develop and

strengthen relations between the countries in all aspects.

Richard A. Marone ’81 has been recognized by Chambers High Net Worth (HNW) for his

work in private wealth law. The Chambers HNW guide ranks the world’s leading high net

worth advisors and includes many of the top tax firms, private banks, and other

institutions. He is a partner at Murtha Cullina and advises individuals, families and

private businesses in the areas of wealth transfer planning, business law and taxation. He

currently serves as Chair of the Murtha Cullina Trusts & Estates Department, a fellow of

ACTEC, and a director of the Connecticut Farmland Trust.

Mitchell G. Blair ’82 was recently recognized by Chambers USA in their 2018

rankings as Band 2 for his work in litigation: General Commercial. Mitch has

extensive experience representing directors of some of the region's largest

companies in shareholder derivative litigation. He is routinely selected for inclusion

in Best Lawyers for numerous of years, named a 2018 Local Litigation Star by

Benchmark Litigation and 2018, and selected to the 2018 Ohio Super Lawyers List

for Business Litigation.

Timothy N. Thomes ’84 has been reappointed by Governor Rick Scott to the Judicial

Nominating Commission for The Sixteenth Judicial Circuit in Florida. He also has been

reappointed as a Special Magistrate by the Chief Judge in the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit.

Timothy is a shareholder at Gunster, Yoakley and Stewart P.A. and practices in the areas

of estate planning, real estate and litigation. He has served as a member of Gunster’s

Ethics Committee and chairman of the Florida Bar’s Professional Ethics Committee.

Michael Gardner ’86 has joined as a shareholder in Greenberg

Traurig’s Government Contract & Projects Practice Northern Virginia office. Mike

focuses his practice on companies that provide national security and infrastructure

services to federal and foreign customers. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in

America for Admiralty & Maritime Law, was a member and chair of Virginia Ship

Repair Association and Virginia Maritime Association, and prior to his private law

practice, Mike served as a Coast Guard line officer supporting Coast Guard

operations in Europe, Africa, and South America.

Scott G. Lindvall ’86 has joined Seyfarth Shaw LLP Litigation Department in New York as

a partner and chair of Seyfarth’s Intellectual Property Trail Practice. For more than 30

years, Scott’s practice has focused on high-stakes patent litigation concerning a large

collection of technologies on behalf of some of the largest telecommunications,

aerospace, automotive and so much more. Scott has represented technology companies

in trade secret jury trials and has advised key members of the pharmaceutical industry in

Hatch-Waxman litigation. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at Marshall-Wythe

School of Law Foundation.

Vanessa T. Valldejuli ’87 retired from local government practice on June 30, 2018.

She completed 31 years of practice which 27 years were in local government

practice. She started as an Assistant City Attorney in Virginia Beach, VA and finished

as the City Attorney of Hampton, VA. She will be devoting her time to church

ministry in the Catholic Church.

Paul J. Cronsbruck ’89 is a sole practitioner with a Florida law firm specializing in

estate planning. Paul has been a member of the Florida and Maryland Bars for over 28

years. He is also a Master of the Bench in the American Inns of Court, Judge John M.

Scheb Inn of Court in Sarasota. In this role, he works with local attorneys and judges

who are devoted to promoting excellence in legal advocacy, professionalism and the

highest standards of ethics in the legal system.

Felicia Faragasso ’90 recently was hired to serve as Senior Legal/Contracts Counsel

and Corporate Secretary and Chief Ethics Officer for Exostar. She is advising the

board of directors and executive management on issues of strategic importance,

and oversee the legal and contracts functions. She is also serving as a key

lawyer/legal advisor on all major business transactions, drafting contracts, and

presenting legal recommendations to management.

Sabrina Johnson ’91 is the University of Mary Washington’s new vice president for equity

and access and will serve as its chief diversity officer. She plans to maintain and strengthen

the University’s diversity programs and provide strategies and leadership to the university

wide equity, access, and inclusion programs. She served as the University’s affirmative

action and equal employment opportunity office, chair of the advisory committee on

diversity and community values, co-chair of UMW President Troy Pain’s task force on

diversity and inclusion.

Stephen C. Schofield ’92 was awarded a Doctorate of Ministry in Bibical Studies from

Emory University in 2017. His Doctoral Project was titled, United to the Lord:

Introducing Contemplative Prayer Practice in an American Protestant Church to Foster

Intimacy with God. He currently serves as the Senior Pastor at Dahlonega United

Methodist Church in Dahlonega, GA.

Theresa W. Carter ’93 was recently appointed to a full-time 16th District General District

Court Judge. She was the former assistant Orange County Commonwealth’s Attorney. She

went out on her own to pursue defense and guardian ad litem work and serving as a

substitute judge in the district. She is making history for being the first woman and the first

African-American to occupy a seat on the bench in the district on a full-time basis.

Ivan Bates ’95 has decided to be a candidate for Baltimore City State’s

Attorney Office. He has worked in the criminal justice system both as a prosecutor

and defense attorney for more than two decades. Prior to his education, he served

in U.S. Army. He was a recipient of the Public Service Fellowship, a member of the

Black Law Student Association and a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He

worked for former State’s Attorney and left to start his own firm, Bates and Garcia.

James Fisher ’97 has been named Interim Provost and Vice President

for Academic Affairs at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He has been a professor of

politics and legal studies at Edinboro for 18 years. Jim has taught a broad range of courses

in law, American politics, political theory, and criminal justice. He served six years as a

chairperson of Edinboro’s Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice. He has

been a member of the executive council of APSCUF and served on the board of directors

of the local and state chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union.

John Carl Valdivielso ’97 married Kelly Renee Vitrikas on April 28, 2018.

Kristan B. Burch ’98 is a member in the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles’s litigation section

and co-chair of the Intellectual Property & Franchising Practice Group. She focuses on

construction and intellectual property. She is one of the directors of Historical Society of

U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Virginia, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce,

and was the president of Tidewater Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

Maquiling B. Parkerson ’98 was appointed to serve as the Vice President Labor

Relations for The Kansas City Southern Railway Company. She recently served as

an associate general counsel for Kansas Southern. She also was a commerce and

corporate attorney for Norfolk Southern Corporation.

Christopher Wesser ’99 has been appointed to the Board of Directors to Spindle, Inc. He recently served

as Executive Vice President, Secretary, and General Counsel at Professional Diversity Network ("IPDN"),

a global technology and networking company having offices in China and the U.S. Also, he served as

General Counsel and Secretary of NAPW, Inc. managing all legal, insurance, and logistical and business

risk matters.

Don Martin ’00 is now General Counsel for the Senate Select Committee on

Intelligence.

Helena S. Mock ’00 has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for Leadership in Law.

She is an Accredited Estate Planner and an Accredited Attorney with the U.S. Department

of Veterans Affairs. She practices law with The Peninsula Center for Estate and Lifelong

Planning in Williamsburg while teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the College of

William & Mary Law School in the fields of elder law, disability law, and estate planning.

Since 2012, she has served as the college’s director of the Elder and Disability Clinic.

Jessica Arons ’00 joined the American Civil Liberties Union in April

as the Senior Advocacy & Policy Counsel for Reproductive Freedom. In this role,

she works with ACLU affiliates around the country to protect and expand

reproductive health, rights, and justice. Previously, she served as the President &

CEO of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project and Director of the

Women’s Health & Rights Program at the Center of American Progress.

Jon Arena ’02 has been named Vice President and Chief Counsel of Huntington Ingalls

Industries Newport News Shipbuilding division. He will provide legal advice and counsel

to senior management and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the provision

of legal advice to the division. He worked as a senior attorney at NASA and then after as

a senior counsel at Boeing Global Services.

Thomas Cullen ’04 is the new U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia. In

this position, he will oversee and handle all matters in the district related to the

investigation and prosecution of alleged crimes against the United States, including

whether to drop cases or file appeals. He was previously working as an attorney at

Woods Rogers where he represented individuals and companies in a variety criminal

matters, internal investigations, and civil litigation.

Ruth Nadeau Dwyer ’04 is a recipient of the 2018 “40 under 40” award from the

Northwest Connecticut Chamber’s Young Professionals Organization. She is a

litigation attorney, focusing on all aspects of family law as well as civil and probate

litigation at Ackerly Brown LLP. She currently serves as Past President, CLE Chair, and

Scholarship Chair and is a member of the Executive Board of the Litchfield County

Association of Women Attorneys.

Michael Gaten ’04 is a Circuit Court judge for the City of Hampton, VA. He was

recruited by members of the Hampton Bar Association to take the Circuit Court

judgeship in his hometown. He was an attorney at the Williamsburg law firm of

Geddy, Harris, Franck and Hickman.

Alex Pickands ’04 was one of the two recipients of the Judge Advocate Association’s

Outstanding Career Judge Advocate Award. Recipients must have a demonstrated

record of outstanding professional accomplishments, service to community, service to

the legal profession and development of subordinates. Colonel Pickands received his

award from Lieutenant General Charles Pede, The Judge Advocate of the Army. While a

student at William & Mary, Colonel Pickands foreshadowed his successful career as a

Judge Advocate by serving as amicus counsel in U.S. v. Garcia, a United States Court of

Appeals for the Armed Forces case.

Rob A. Maylor ’05 has produced the movie Sprinter and the movie had multiple

wins at the American Black Film Festival. The wins include Best Feature, Best

Director, and the Audience Award. Sprinter is a coming-of-age drama which follows

a 17-year-old student athlete who dreams of qualifying for the national youth track

team in a bid to reunite with his mother, an illegal immigrant in the United States.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher ’06 wins U.S. House Representatives District 7 Democratic

primary runoff. Her top priorities if elected would include fighting for more federal

help to fund long-awaited flood projects, strengthening and improving the Affordable

Care Act, improving transportation in the Houston area, gun safety measures, and for

comprehensive immigration reform with strengthening border security but protecting

dreams and providing a pathway to citizenship. She will move on to face the

Republican candidate in the midterm elections in November.

Brian Levy ’06 joins as a partner in Burr & Forman LLP’s Creditors’ Rights and

Bankruptcy Practice Group. He is an experienced litigator focusing on

representing financial institutions, mortgage servicers and other creditors in

state and federal courts throughout Georgia. He has an extensive experience

litigating and arbitrating complex business disputes across a range of industries,

including financial institutions, real estate, insurance, manufacturing and

technology. He began his legal career as a staff attorney for the U.S. Court of

Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Virginia Reed Kelly ’07 has joined the law firm of Green Hampton & Kelly, PLLC, as an

associate. She focuses her practice on environmental, conservation, and non-profit law. She

also is the founder & executive director of Climb for Conservation, Inc, where the mission is

to climb mountains around the world for a conservation cause and inspire people to raise

awareness and funds to save threatened and endangered species.

Zachary Terwilliger ’07 was appointed to serve as the U.S. Attorney in

the Eastern District of Virginia. Terwilliger will supervise the prosecution of all federal

crimes and the litigation of all civil matters in which the United States has an interest.

He began his career as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia,

served as a counselor to former U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride, providing advice on

legal, ethical, and personnel issues, and served as a spokesperson for EDVA. He also

has served on detail as an Associate Deputy Attorney General and the role of Chief of

Staff in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General.

Amy Schnettgoecke ’08 is the Director of International Benefits and Lead Benefits Legal

Counsel at Emerson Electric Co. She previously was the Director of Employee Benefits

Compliance and Employee Benefits Counsel.

Jason Stickler ’08 was named the new COO for IZON Network. Prior to this new position, he

was the Vice President of Operations for TGT Sports Venture where he was responsible for

vetting new investments, structuring new entities, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the

various accounting, information technology, and legal departments. He was an attorney for Orion Air

Group and Tempus Jets.

Lawton B. Way ’10 has been promoted to partner with Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. Way

focuses his practice on securities law, corporate finance, corporate governance and general

corporate law. He has represented Fortune 200 companies in public debt offerings up to

$10 billion.

Anne Hampton Andrews ’11 married Bryan M. Haynes on September

9, 2017. Anne is an associate at McGuireWoods LLP in Richmond. He is a partner at

Troutman Sanders LLP in Richmond.

Rica Calhoun ’11 is the new Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer at Florida A&M. She will

be responsible for providing leadership in offering guidance and communicating with the

campus community about compliance risks. She will also advise the president and senior

administrators on matters of compliance and ethics. She was previously at Western

Illinois University where she began as assistant director for the Office of Equal

Opportunity and Access. She became the first internal General Counsel for WIU.

Joseph B. Allen ’12 married Maureen Filak on June 2, 2018.

Madelyn Buckley Parikh ’12 is expecting a daughter in August with husband Rakesh J. Parikh.

Victoria Wolfe Moore ’13 married Walker Terry on May 13, 2017.

Mia Rose Shirley ’13 married JT Bowler on July 1, 2017.

Collin Atkins ’13 recently joined as an associate attorney for GreeneHurlocker

PLC which is a renewable energy and corporate law practice. Atkins focuses his

practice on assisting clients with contract drafting and employment and

regulatory concerns. He offers counsel on a wide variety of commercial

agreements across different industries which will contribute to the expansion

of the firm’s OPENgc services.

Natch Greyes ’13 is running as a Democrat for Grafton County Attorney. He has worked as a

fellow in the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office and interned at the FBI. He is

working as a district court prosecutor working to improve services for victims of domestic

and sexual violence, integrate the court system with veterans’ affairs services and support

getting addicts into drug courts.

Jack T. Brock ’14 is an associate attorney with the firm of William F. Hill in

Greenville, NC. His practices areas include business transactions, civil litigation,

corporate law, creditor’s rights, and intellectual property. Prior to this position,

he was an associate at Colombo Kitchin and a judicial law clerk for the Circuit

Court in Maryland.

Annapolis, MD.

Matthew Lewis Hubbard ’16 married Elizabeth Ashton Ockerman on October 15, 2016.

Christopher P. Yakubisin ’16 married Callie St. Jean Yakubisin on September 2, 2017.

Devin Bates ’16 is an associate attorney with the office of Mitchell Williams Selig Gates &

Woodyard in Little Rock, AR. His practice areas are litigation, business disputes, professional &

medical liability defense, and labor & employment. Before joining the firm, he served as a law

clerk for Chief U.S. District Judge P.K. Holmes III. He has experience in business litigation,

education law, and appellate advocacy.

Tyler Rosá ’16 has joined Williams Mullen as an associate in the Finance & Real Estate

section. He represents clients in a wide range of commercial real estate matters such as

sales, leases and financings. He has advised clients on environment-related real estate

matters such as compliance with the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act and Virginia

Marine Resources Commission regulations.

L. Olivia Wiggins ’16 is a litigation associate with the firm of Poole Brooke Plumlee PC in

Norfolk, VA. She practices in several fields including health care defense, municipal law,

eminent domain, and worker’s compensation.

Janet Smith ’17 has joined Williams Mullen as an associate in the Intellectual

Property practice. She represents clients in a broad range of intellectual property

matters such as patent, trademark and copyright infringement litigation at the
