2 Islamic Studies

Overview Islamic Studies cover learning the basics of the religion and

practices.

Objectives Objective of the first term is to make sure the students get a full understanding of how to perform wudhu, give Athan

and do Salat. We will be covering upto Sajda in this term.

Children will be practicing the postures in the class and parents are expected to make sure they follow up at home.

Make sure they follow the lessons in an age appropriate way. In this age group, kids need not study the translation,

and if the kid is just starting to perform Salat, they don't have to know the Arabic prayers even. It is but important to

get them started with regular prayers.

Evaluation Students will keep a log of their daily salat in the homework book. A simple log like below is good enough

Date:

Teacher will do additional evaluation based on in class

discussion and engagement and will write their feedback in the homework book

2.1 Salat

2.1.1 Ablution(Wudu)

Islam makes cleanliness of body and mind an essential part of Prayer. Along with the purification of

heart, it also requires a Muslim to perform ablution before Salat. The Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa) is reported to have asked his companions on one occasion whether there could ever remain any dirt

on the body of a person who took a bath five times a day in a stream flowing in front of his house. The companions replied in the negative. The Prophet then remarked that one who prayed five times

a day could not have any filth or dirt on his person. In addition, ablution prepares one mentally for Salat. It also helps one's concentration in Prayer.

One should say, BismiLlaahirRahmaanir-Raheem (In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the

Merciful) and perform Ablution as follows:

• Washing the hands three times up to the wrist; the right hand first and then the left.

• Cleaning the mouth by rinsing it with water three times, massaging the gums at the same time.

• Cleaning out the nostrils thoroughly by putting some water in them.

• Washing the face three times. • Washing the forearms including the elbows three times.

• Moistening the hands and running them over the head from front down to the neck, then running the thumbs around the ears and wiping inside.

• Washing the feet including the ankles, three times; the right foot first and then the left.

In case socks are put on after ablution, then during the rest of the day, it is allowed to pass wet fingers over them, instead of washing the feet each time, provided these have not been taken off

during this time.

Surah Al-Fatihah is recited in every raka`ah. After reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, a portion

(preferably at least 3 verses or a short Surah) of the Holy Qur’an is also recited in the first

two raka`aat only. One of the commonly recited portions is the following Surah:

After reciting these verses or any other portion of the Holy Qur’an, the Imam announces the transition from the standing position to bowing (rukoo`) by calling out Allahu Akbar, “Allah is the

Greatest.” The congregation then follows him into Rukoo` (bowing position), reciting the following Tasbeeh (glorification and praise):

2.2 Prayers for Parents

• It is the commandment of Allah to respect and obey your parents.

• Listen to their advice as they have been experienced much more than you and can offer you a great deal of knowledge about the world.

• Remember that your parents love you more than anything else in the world.

• Show interest in their lives.

• Never raise your voice in front of them and always use respectful language.

• Never think that they are a burden.

• Always be patient with them.

• Be kind to them and make an effort not to complain about having to obey your parents.

• If you feel your parents don’t listen to you, take a moment to think about what you want them to know and discuss your problems calmly with them and make sure you listen to their side of story.

• Be helpful and assume responsibility around the house by doing chores.

• Remember that new toys, clothes, cell phones are fun to have, but be aware of your parents’ income and how much they can afford to spend.

• The prayers that parents make for their children find special acceptance with Allah.

• Every day, take the opportunity to tell your parents you love them. Always remember parents in your prayers. Allah taught us this beautiful prayer for parents:

Rabbi-rham-humaa-kamaa-rabbayaanii-sagheeraa

“Oh my Lord, have mercy on them since they raised me with kindness in my childhood” (17:25)

Prophet Muhammadsaw said, “He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders” (Tirmidhi)

2.3 Etiquettes of the Mosque

The mosque is a place where we gather to worship Allah. Therefore, we should be mindful of the following rules when visiting a mosque:

• Take a bath and wear clean clothes before going to the mosque.

• Avoid eating strong smelling food.

• Take your shoes off before entering the prayer hall and put them on the shoe rack.

• Step into the mosque with the right foot first, and recite the following prayer:

BismiLlah-issa-laatu wassalaamu `alaa rasool-iLlahi Allahummagh-fir-lee dhunoobee waftah-lee abwaaba rah-matika

Translation: “In the name of Allah, all blessings and peace be upon the Prophet(saw) of Allah. Oh Allah! Forgive my sins and open the door of Your blessing and mercy upon me.”

TAD_ML1_Sep-Nov_2016 20

• Upon entering, greet everyone with “Assalam-o-Alaikum.”

• Do not walk in front of someone who is praying.

• The front rows should be occupied first. If the first row is full, then start filling the second row from the middle point of the row.

• Keep the mosque clean. Do not take food or drinks inside the prayer hall.

• When leaving the mosque, say “Asslam-o-Alaikum,” step out with the left foot first and recite the following prayer:

BismiLlah-issa-laatu wassalaamu `alaa rasool-iLlahi Allahummagh-fir-lee dhunoobee waftah-lee abwaaba fadlika

Translation: “In the name of Allah, (I leave) and all the blessings and peace be upon the Prophetsaw of Allah. O Allah! Forgive me my sins and open the doors of Your blessings upon me.”

3 Comtemporary Studies

Overview This class will be more of discussion based and the teacher

will use the material provided as a guidance to take the discussion(s) forward.

Objectives The primary focus of this class is to encourage students to be

engaged in class while learning the values as a Muslim child. This term focuses on honest and speaking truth. The teacher

will bring in additional stories and examples to engage the students in the class.

Parents are expected to talk to the children about the values

they learn in the class and help them keep up with them in day to day life. Make sure the students see the advantage of

speaking the truth always – if they do a mistake and tell you that honestly, please appreciate them for their honesty than

punishing for the mistake.

3.1 Importance of Speaking the Truth

Beingtruthfulmeansspeakingthetruthandalsosayingthingsthatreflectreality.

HolyQuransays:

“O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in word and deeds).”( 9:119)

‘O Ye who believe! Fear Allah, and say the right word. He will reform your conduct for you and forgive you your

sins. And whoso obeys Allah and His Messenger, shall surely attain a mighty success.’ (33:71-72)

Ahadith:

‘You must be truthful, for truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man will keep speaking the truth and striving to speak the truth until he will be recorded with Allaah as a siddeeq (speaker of the truth). Beware of telling lies, for lying leads to immorality and immorality leads to Hellfire. A man will keep telling lies and striving to tell lies until he is recorded with Allaah as a liar.” (Muslim)

This hadeeth indicates that truthfulness leads to righteousness, an all-embracing concept that includes all kinds of goodness and different kinds of righteous deeds. Immorality is basically an

inclination towards going away from the truth, and the immoral person is one who is inclined to

turn away from the path of guidance.

Telling the truth is a very good habit. If you always speak the truth, you can save yourself from a lot

of trouble! Here is a story of a man who did a lot of bad things, but his promise to tell the truth saved him:

Once a man came to the prophet Muhammad

(SAW) and said, "Oh prophet of Allah, I have many bad habits. Which one of them should I

give up first?" The prophet said, "Give up telling lies first and always speak the truth."

The man promised to do so and went home.

At night the man was about to go out to steal.

Before setting out, he thought for a moment about the promise he made with the prophet.

"If tomorrow the prophet asks me where have I been, what shall I say? Shall I say that I went

out stealing? No, I cannot say that. But nor can I lie. If I tell the truth, everyone will start

hating me and call me a thief. I would be punished for stealing."

So the man decided not to steal that night, and gave up this bad habit.

Page 23: Class Level 2 (ML1) Term & Month Term 1 / Sep …...1 TAD_ML1_Sep-Nov_2016 Class Level 2 (ML1) Term & Month Term 1 / Sep-Nov 2016 Holy Qur’an ü Rules of recitation ü Surah Al Ikhlas

TAD_ML1_Sep-Nov_2016 23

In this way, whenever the man thought of doing something bad, he remembered his promise to tell

the truth at all times. One by one, he gave up all his bad habits and became a good Muslim and a

very good person.

FromFridaySermon9thSept2011:

Truthfulness is a quality that is universally endorsed by people and not just religion. The Holy Quran states that the root of all sin and immorality is lying.

It is precisely when falsehood has become too great that Allah sends his chosen ones (prophets). It is

the Prophets and those who are rightly guided that restore truth in the world according to Allah’s command.

“When we reflect on the life of the Holy Prophet(saw), we find that the people of the time, even the disbelievers would know him as Siddiq (Truthful) and Amin (Trustworthy). It was this truthfulness

of the Holy Prophet(saw) that was demonstrated when he gathered his relatives and the chiefs of Makkah, and said that “If I tell you that behind this hill, there is an army hidden that you cannot

see, will you believe this?” This was apparently something impossible, for an army to be concealed behind a hill; it would not have been possible for that army to be invisible. Yet despite this,

everybody said unanimously that ‘O Muhammad, you have never lied, therefore, we believe this.’

Prophets, through their truthfulness convince people of their message and attract people towards

them

The Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) wrote: ‘Qaulan-Sadeed (the right word) entails uttering

what is completely true and appropriate and has no hint of randomness, uselessness and falsehood.’

The above statements of the Promised Messiah make it clear that Taqwa (righteousness) is attained when truth is upheld in every situation, in times of difficulty or ease; be it when arriving at a decision

when in a decision-making capacity, at the time of giving testimony, at home with wife and children, with friends and family, in business while selling or buying and with one’s employer. In daily

matters and exchanges everything should be completely truthful and without ambiguity, which may not lead the other to random interpretation. One should be truthful even if it goes against one. Some

people think that a little falsifying in every day matters does not matter. God states, it matters. Such practices lower the standard of Taqwa (righteousness), leads one to falsehood and distant from God or is rejected by God. True believers stay firm on qawl-e-sadeed (the right word).

Benefits of Speaking the Truth

• When you speak truth, you don’t have to remember what you said to whom.

• You will not accidentally contradict yourself.

• You earn the reputation of being an honest person.

• People follow your example and are more truthful to you.

• You sleep better.

3.2 Stories of Islam: Balancing Mercury There once lived a pious man all by himself, spending most of his time in praying, fasting and praising Allah. He was very happy with his spiritual progress. No wicked thoughts came to his mind and no evil temptations entered his heart.

One night, he dreamt a rather disturbing dream. He saw that a shopkeeper in the town was far superior to him in spirituality and that he must go to the shopkeeper to learn the basics of true spiritual life. In the morning, the pious man went in search of the shopkeeper. He found him busy with his customers, selling goods and collecting money with a cheerful face. He sat in a corner of the shop and carefully watched the shopkeeper. “No signs of any spiritual life at all,” he said to himself. His dream could not be true. But then he saw the shopkeeper disappear to offer his Salaat.

When he returned, he was again busy dealing with money matters. The shopkeeper noticed the pious man sitting in the corner and said, "As Salamu Alaikum. Would you like something, brother?" "Wa Alaikum As Salam. Oh! No! No!" said the pious man. "I don't want to buy anything, but I want to ask you a question." He then related his dream. "Well, that is very simple to explain," Said the shopkeeper, "but you will have to do something for me before I answer your question." "I will do anything for you," replied the pious man. "Alright. Take this saucer; there is some mercury in it. Go to the other end of the street and come back within half an hour. If the mercury falls out of the saucer, you will hear nothing from me. Go."

The pious man took the saucer and started running. The mercury nearly wobbled out of the saucer. He saved it just in time, and slowed down. Then he remembered he had to return within half an hour, so he started walking at a fast pace. At long last he returned puffing and panting. "Here is your mercury, safe and sound," he told the shopkeeper. "Now tell me the true interpretation of my dream."

The shopkeeper looked at the pious man's weary condition and asked him, "Well, friend, how many times did you remember Allah while you were going from this end of the street to the other?" "Remember Allah!" exclaimed the pious man. "I did not remember Him at all! I was too worried about the mercury in the saucer." "But I do remember Him all the time," said the shopkeeper. "When I am doing my business, I am also carrying mercury in a saucer. I am fair, honest and kind to my customers. I never forget Allah in my dealing with other men”

Lessons Learned:

1. Remember Allah at all times because Allah is our Guardian. 2. The purpose of life is to worship Allah but it does not mean that we stop living our life for

our family and society.

3.3 Stories of Islam: The Patient and the Old Man

When passing through a mountain pass, a Bedouin once came across an old man who was blind and who seemed to be afflicted with various ailments all over his body. It was clear that he was wasting

away. He was even paralyzed and was constantly forced to remain in a seated position.

The Bedouin could clearly hear him say, "All praise is for Allah, Who has kept me safe from ailments with which He has tested many among His creation. And He has indeed preferred me over

many among those that He created."

"My brother!" exclaimed the Bedouin. "From what have you been saved? By Allah, I think that you

have been afflicted with every single kind of ailment!" "Go away from me," said the old man, as he raised his head. "Do I not still have a tongue with which I can pronounce His Oneness, and with

which I can remember Him every single moment? And do I not still have a heart with which I can know Him?" These words of the old man were enough for the Bedouin to repent to Allah for his sins

and ask Him for forgiveness.

Lessons Learned:

1. There is always someone else who is experiencing more hardship than you. 2. Allah says, “And We bestowed wisdom on Luqman, saying, 'Be grateful to Allah: and

whoso is grateful, is grateful only for the good of his own soul. And whoso is ungrateful, then, surely, Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy’” Surah Luqman (31:13).
