Class Insects, Order Neuroptera Net-winged Insects
• Adults with 2 pairs of membranous wings,
each with many veins
• Antennae relatively long, thread-like—or pectinate or clubbed, but NOT short or bristle-like as in Odonata.
• Tarsi 5-segmented (3 segmented in Odonata)
![Page 3: Class Insects, Order Neuroptera - New Mexico State …aces.nmsu.edu/4h/documents/100-arthropods---pt-5-neuroptera...Antlion Class Insecta, Order Neuroptera •Metamorphosis: Complete](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022022015/5b4d41317f8b9a414e8b4e1a/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)

Most species about 10mm long. Wings & body pale green. Live specimens have metallic gold or copper-colored eyes. Smell bad when crushed or roughly handled. Eggs laid singly on thin stalks.

Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera Beetles
• ‘Coleo’ = ‘shield’; ‘-ptera’ = wing; forewings usually opaque, thickened; hind wings larger, membranous
• Remember the tip about antenna types
• Also, if possible, pay special attention to the ‘tarsal formula’ which will differ in different beetle families
• Shapes, sizes, colors, patterns highly variable
Tarsal formula is reported as ‘5-5-5’ or ‘5-5-4’ or ‘5-5-3’ The numbers refer to the tarsal counts for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd legs, respectively
