Pioneer has two semesters. There are either six or seven class periods in the student's day. In 2015-16, classes run from 7:45 a.m. (start of 1st hour) until 2:39 p.m. (end of 6th hour) and 3:43 p.m. (end of 7th hour).

EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM Pioneer High School offers a full program of extra curricular activities that includes over 75 student clubs, 37 interscholastic sports, a music and theater program. The Pioneer Theater Guild is student run and presents four plays annually. The athletic department is one of the finest in the Midwest – winning over 100 state championships. Our Music Department, which is part of the curriculum, is internationally recognized for its excellence. In 2010, Pioneer received a GRAMMY Gold award as one of the top three high school music departments in the nation. In 2006, the GRAMMY Foundation honored Pioneer as the outstanding high school music department in the nation. Pioneer also received Grammy Gold Signature School awards in 2004 and 2005 as one of the top seven high school music departments in addition to Grammy Signature School awards in 2002 and 2003 as one of the top fifty high school music departments.

CURRICULUM Pioneer High Schools boasts an extensive curriculum to meet the needs of all of its students. Courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, and World Language range from basic to 15 Accelerated classes and 22 Advanced Placement classes. There is a full complement of elective courses offered, which include Music, Art, Theater, Physical Education, Project Lead the Way as well as Career and Technical Education options. Additionally, students may elect courses that provide them experiences in our community and online courses.

UNIT OF CREDIT A full credit course meets one class period per day, five days per week for each semester, and yields .5 unit of credit.

COURSE LOAD Students are required to take six courses each semester. Some students elect seven.

SUMMARY DATA ON CLASS OF 2015 Four hundred and eighty-nine students graduated in the Class of 2015. Ninety-six percent are continuing their education in institutions of high learning; 78% are attending four-year schools and 13% are attending two-year schools.

GUIDANCE SERVICES A professional guidance personnel to student ratio is 1:292. There are six full-time counselors. L 1.12 COMMITTEES/MEETINGS AAEA [Ann Arbor Education Association] – The AAEA is the union of the faculty. Meetings are conducted in inform members of issues, events and union business. Pioneer High elects building representatives. ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM – meets weekly on Monday & Thursday The Administrative Team, is made up of the Pioneer administrators and is chaired by the principal, meets weekly to discuss policies, procedures, plans and problems relating to the high school. INSTRUCTIONAL COUNCIL MEETING – High School Council and Instructional Council [all administrators) CRISIS TEAM – meets as needed The Crisis Team is comprised of administrators, counselors, custodians, teachers, nurse, social workers, psychologist, office professionals and paraprofessionals. The committee’s focus is to assure the safety of our students and staff and the security of Pioneer High School. DEPARTMENT CHAIR MEETING – meets 1ST & 3RD Mondays The Curriculum Committee is comprised of department chairmen, building administrators and a counselor representative with the principal as chairman. The purpose of the committee is to consider matters relating to curriculum improvement and coordination, professional growth of teachers, standards, requirements for graduation and recommendation to college and to suggest other recommendations, with approval of the principal, for consideration by the faculty. BUILDING ADVISORY TEAM– meets 1st & 3RD Tuesday The BAT is composed of members who are elected by the faculty at large. Purpose of the BAT – Evaluation of Role:

1. To make recommendations to the principal concerning the policies and procedures of the school. These recommendations may go directly to the principal or, if appropriate, may be taken to the faculty as a whole for discussion and broader support before going to the principal.

2. To plan and implement special events, especially staff developed sessions. The BAT may work independently or with the PTSO, Student Council or administration.

3. To recommend ongoing committees an activities to solve or prevent problems which affect faculty members and thus school climate (e.g., The Faculty Support Team).

4. The BAT’s aim is to provide leadership by elected faculty members in developing school policies and accomplishing school business jointly with the administration. Matters of curriculum, advocacy, and contract obligations are specifically assigned to other bodies.

5. The committee shall consist of twelve faculty members, elected at large, for three-year terms. To provide continuity, four members shall be elected each year in May. The principal shall be a member of the committee.

6. The committee shall elect a chairperson each year and adopt rules of procedure. It shall form ad hoc or standing sub-committees it shall deem necessary and may include parents, students, administrators, another faculty as members of these sub-committees.

7. The BAT will meet on the first Thursday of each month in the Principal’s Conference Room. Meetings may be added or canceled at the committee’s discretion. All meetings hall be open and shall include hearing concerns from any member of the Pioneer Community.

FACULTY MEETINGS – meets 2nd and 4th Wednesday Teachers, support staff and administrators meet twice a month with the principal chairing the meeting. Information sharing and in-service are the main purposes of the faculty meetings. PTSO [Parent-Teacher-Student Organization] The PTSO is comprised of the principal, two faculty representatives, a student representative from each grade, elected parent officers, and parent volunteers from each grade level. The main purpose of the PTSO is to strengthen the partnership among the various constituencies within the Pioneer community through information-sharing and activity planning. CONTINUOUS SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT – meets 3rd Thursday of the month from 4-6pm The Pioneer CSI is comprised of faculty members, students, parents, and the principal. The committee meets at least twice a month. Its purposes are as follows:

1. To determine a process for making inclusive building level decisions. 2. To participate in developing and evaluating a school improvement plan. 3. To develop, write and evaluate a plan of the use of site-based school improvement funds.

Other possibilities for involvement include sponsoring or facilitating student “US” (Understanding and Sharing Diversity) group.

1.13 SCHOOL RULES PIONEER HIGH SCHOOL

LOCAL SCHOOL RULES Harassment/Sexual Harassment: It is a violation of Federal and State of Michigan Laws and of this policy for any student of the Ann Arbor Public Schools to sexually harass a student or a staff member by speaking or acting in any of the ways defined by the AAPS District’s Rights and Responsibilities handbook. Any conduct, which violates this rule, will result in immediate disciplinary action. Fighting/Assaults: Self-discipline is the ultimate goal for each student. Those few students who misbehave and interfere with their own and others’ learning and teaching must be prepared for the consequences for their action. The consequences for misbehavior are described in five levels of action. The consequences for misbehavior are described in five levels of action in the Student Rights and Responsibilities booklet. Off Campus: Students may not leave the school campus without proper administrative authorization. Prior permission to leave the campus must be obtained from parents and reported to the grade office in accordance with the attendance policy. Students leaving school because of illness must check out through the clinic and the nurse will contact parents and excuse the student’s absence. Parking: Students may not go to the parking lot or to cars during the day without prior permission from an administrator, unless they are leaving at the end of their scheduled classes. This includes leaving to get a book or other items from a car. Cellphones, iPods, Photographic Devices, Electronic Devices, and Other Equipment:

DO NOT BRING VALUABLES TO SCHOOL. PHS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS. • Cellular Phones, iPods, Photographic Devices, etc. Cell phones must be turned off in all instructional settings

(classrooms, labs, outdoor classrooms etc.) during the day. Cell phones may be used before and after school hours and/or during passing time. School personnel reserve the right to confiscate cell phones when they interfere with instruction. All items will be taken to the student’s administrator for parent pick-up. If a student refuses to give up the electronic devise, a behavioral referral will be written for insubordination. Photos and videos may not be taken at school without proper authorization.

• Electronic Devices–Students are prohibited from carrying pocket pagers, laser pointers, or other such devices in school. Personal radios and CD players are not allowed in the building.

• Other Equipment–Students should only bring to school what is necessary for their schoolwork. Items confiscated by staff members may be kept until parents can pick them up. Contraband will not be returned. Items such as water guns, water balloons, or similar items are prohibited on school property and buses. Skateboards and roller skates/blades are not to be brought into the school building. Inappropriate items will be confiscated.

Identification: Students must give their name and/or show their ID card when requested by any staff member. Lost cards should be replaced immediately. Replacement cards can be obtained in the General Office for $10.00. Unauthorized Areas: Students may not be in unauthorized areas of the building, school grounds or parking lot during school hours. Behavior: Directing profanity, vulgar language or obscene gestures toward others including students, school personnel or school visitors will not be tolerated. Use of Tobacco: No one is permitted to smoke or use tobacco products on school property or at any school-sponsored event. Students smoking and/or using other tobacco products in school or at a school-sponsored event will result in a one (1) day in-school suspension for the first offense, two (2) day, in-school suspension for the second offense and three (3) day, in-school suspension for the third offense. Repeated violations will result in suspension from school. Public Act 314, the “Youth Tobacco Act,” prohibits a minor (person under 18 years of age) from possessing, smoking, or chewing tobacco in all public places. Violation of this law is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $50. Student Supervision: Students are under the supervision and authority of all AAPS employees, and are expected to comply with all reasonable requests. Signs & Posters: Permission to post any signs, posters or flyers must be received from the Administrator in charge of activities. All posted materials not approved will be taken down. Do not put signs on any entrance or exit door glass. No signs are permitted to be posted on the brick walls throughout the building. Representatives from the sponsoring organization are responsible for taking signs down after the posted event. No more than ten (10) signs in the building for any one event and only in designated locations. Vandalism: Writing, defacing, marking and/or painting on any part of the Pioneer building, including lockers, desks, chairs and educational materials are prohibited. Students are subject to a maintenance fee to defray the costs of cleaning, repair, or replacement.

L Sales: The selling of any food, products or tickets for any school event as a part of fundraising activities must be coordinated with and be approved by the Administrator in charge of fundraising prior to the start of the activity. Falsifying Information: Students who falsify or forge bus passes or excuses for absences, or any other school prepared forms shall be disciplined as per the appropriate provision of the discipline policy. Undue Display of Affection: Undue familiarity and excessive display of affection between students is discouraged, and any repetition after counseling and guidance will result in parental involvement and/or disciplinary action. I.S.S. (In School Suspension): Failure to report and complete assigned in-school suspension will result in further disciplinary action which will include increasing the amount of time assigned and/or suspension from school. Toys: All gambling paraphernalia (dice, cards), water guns, water balloons or similar items are prohibited on school property and buses. These items will be confiscated and returned to parents/guardians only. Skateboards, etc.: The use of skateboards, bicycles, and roller skates/blades anywhere within Pioneer High School is prohibited. Skateboards and roller skates/blades and bicycles are not to be brought into the school building. Thrown Objects: The throwing of snowballs or other objects on or about the Pioneer building and property is prohibited. This includes throwing snowballs at school buses and other vehicles. Study Halls: When students are assigned to study halls (e.g. – no substitute teacher available) they are expected to follow the established rules, which pertain to appropriate conduct in the study hall:

• Study hall is considered a class and students are to report to study hall. • All students must have study materials and refrain from disturbing others. • Students are to remain in study hall for the duration of the period unless given permission to leave by the

teacher/staff in charge.

Lunch Behavior: The following rules pertain to student behavior during the lunch periods: • Enter only at the appropriate entrance. • Form and maintain a single line at each service area. • Do not “cut” in front of another person in line. • Avoid loud and boisterous conversations, yelling, etc. • No object, no matter how small, is to be thrown. • Remove all trays, paper, cups and cans promptly from the table after eating so that the area will be suitable for use

by other students. • Certain areas are off-limits during lunch times. Students who enter an off-limits area during lunchtime will be

considered loitering and dealt with accordingly. • Students involved in disruptive behavior will result in disciplinary action (i.e. service detention). • No games of chance/gambling (e.g. dice, cards) paraphernalia is allowed in the cafeteria or at school.

Right of Privacy: Students possess the right of privacy of person as well as freedom from unreasonable search and seizure of property. The individual’s right, however, is balanced by the schools’ responsibility to protect the health, safety, and welfare of its students. All lockers are the property of the school. A student’s locker and/or its contents may be searched by building administrators without prior permission in order to uphold the safety and security of pupils and personnel in accordance with Act 451, Section 380.13
