Differences between Clarksburg Village ES #2 and Wilson Wims ES:

Classrooms:

• Add (1) classroom

• Delete PEP Classrooms and suite

• Add Special Education Classrooms and support areas (offices, conference room, support center)

• Increase size of Instrumental Music by 50 SF

Administration

• Add Itinerant Staff Office (140 SF) and create a counseling suite

Media Center

• Increase size of Work and Production Area (500SF)

• Decrease size of Support/Storage (250SF)

• Computer Lab was removed from program

General

• The elevator may not need a machine room, but instead a small electrical closet

Sustainable Site Design Sensitive Stormwater Design

Bioretention Areas (aka biofilters or raingardens)

around school treat rainwater before it recharges

the groundwater.

Planted with native shrubs, wildflowers, grasses,

and trees and don’t require a lot of watering.

Below the plants are layers of permeable soils,

gravel, and sand that clean the water.

MULTIPURPOSE BALLFILED COMPLETED OVER WELLFIELD

A Geothermal Wellfield and Ground Source Heat Pumps is an

energy efficient HVAC system that moves heat and cooling from

one place to another all year.

Second Floor PlanFirst Floor Plan

Heat pump closets between every classroom

allow teachers to adjust the temperatures in

their rooms independent of their neighbors

to optimize thermal comfort

Water Efficiency Inside the Building. . . and Out

Native and Drought-Resistant Plants

Require little to no watering around the site and

in the courtyard.

Water Efficient Plumbing Fixtures

Such as dual-flush toilet valves and pint urinals, low-

flow shower heads and lavatory faucet aerators all save

approximately 30% potable water usage.

Page 31: CLARKSBURG VILLAGE ES #2...Media Center • Increase size of Work and Production Area (500SF) • Decrease size of Support/Storage (250SF) • Computer Lab was removed from program

Outdoor Environmental Classroom

Raingardens, Classroom Seating, Plaza for Art or Science projects

The shady side is planted with woodland species and has boulders for

creepy-crawly discoveries. The sunny side has hose bibs and flat lawn for

future planting beds or seating areas.

Natural Daylighting StrategiesTypical Classroom Design

Classrooms oriented North and South to control daylight

Large window wall for each classroom

Exterior sunshades on south elevation

Interior blinds for glare control

Sloped ceilings to bounce light deeper into room

Daylight Harvesting dimming controls on pendant lights

Acoustical Design

Less Distractions = Better Attention

Core Learning Spaces are designed for

reduced mechanical background noise

and reverberation.

Carpets, wall panels, and ceiling systems

absorb sound and reduce noise.

Optimized acoustical sound transmission

between classrooms and corridors with

full height CMU partition walls.

Page 34: CLARKSBURG VILLAGE ES #2...Media Center • Increase size of Work and Production Area (500SF) • Decrease size of Support/Storage (250SF) • Computer Lab was removed from program

Healthy Indoor Environment

Low VOC Materials

Paints, adhesives, flooring, paints and coatings

are low VOC (volatile organic compound) so the

interior air is healthier

No Smoking on School Grounds

This facility does not allow smoking on grounds

or in the school.

Walk Off Mats

Walk off mats at entrances remove excess dirt

and grime from shoes. This reduces the amount

of tracked in debris and harmful pollutants to the

air.

MCPS Green Cleaning Contract

Reduce amount of chemicals used and reduce

waste created by cleaning

Page 35: CLARKSBURG VILLAGE ES #2...Media Center • Increase size of Work and Production Area (500SF) • Decrease size of Support/Storage (250SF) • Computer Lab was removed from program

Recycling is Everywhere. . . .

And Materials with Recycled Content

Post-consumer recycled aluminum is visible in

the countertop material in the Media Center at

Wilson Wims ES.

Many other products in the school such as steel,

concrete, asphalt, metal studs, ceiling panels,

and concrete block have recycled content.
