December Marriages Chris Schalk Barren County Agriculture Extension Agent The annual Tri-Coun- ty Hay & Straw Auc- tion has caused a lot of discussion in the agri- culture community of south central Kentucky. In an effort to answer some of the numerous questions about the sale, here is a brief sum- mary. Twenty-five different consigners offered over 1,300 rolls of dry grass or legume hay. Nearly 80 large square bales were placed in the auc- tion, as well as, over 3,300 small square bales. Rolled balage, rolled corn stalks, rolled straw, and large squares of straw round- ed out the forage that was available at this 4th annual event. The average weight of all dry rolled hay was 966 pounds. The heaviest dry rolls of 5’ X 6’ of al- falfa were 1,348-pound average and the light- est dry grass rolls were 4’ X 5’ rolls averaging 642. Small square bales average weight was 44 pounds. Just shy of $60,000 was sold through the auction. Numerous buyers and sellers have made con- tacts and have begun business relationships. The real question every- one seems to be asking is, “what did hay bring?” An analysis of the sales data shows that for dry grass hay, stored inside, averaged 862 pounds per roll with an average price of $51.00 per roll. One very interest- ing fact that present- ed itself after looking at the sales data was that the average roll of grass hay stored inside weighed 862 pounds and the average weight of hay stored outside was 1,190 pounds. One can assume that much of the 328 difference is simply water. However, the hay stored inside had no spoilage around the roll, where outside stored hay always has some spoilage. So even though a roll stored outside weights more, when you subtract the water and spoilage you get significantly less hay that livestock can eat. As producers are mak- ing plans for the 2020 haying season, the abil- ity to store hay in the dry becomes more and more important as mar- gins continue to shrink. For more hay storage information contact the Barren County Cooper- ative Extension Service. In the Short Rows Homeowners may be noticing stinkbugs, lady beetles, and com- mon attic flies in their homes, especially near windows of infrequent- ly used rooms. These insects are merely seek- ing winter harborage and can be most effec- tively controlled by sim- ply vacuuming them up. Tri-County Hay Auction Summary
